They could be both right. A €10m bid may be the right figure but the structure of the deal seems to regularly be the issue in transfers these days. They may have rejected with the ask for more upfront

* Everton are an exception to the rule. They are allowed to beat West Ham to signings, even though they really shouldn't.

If we're going for this guy I hope he's up for the task off the ball and physically because Newcastle walked straight through the middle of the pitch with ease at times today and that was an issue in the pre-season games as well.

Personally I'd prefer someone in the mould of that Sangare: big, strong, able to intercept passes, stop counters etc. if we're gonna persist with a 2 man midfield it feels pretty crucial we get this addition right.

Does he have good pace and some strength on the ball? I know Coops wants us to move the ball better/faster but we got physically hammered in the contests at times.

What I was trying to get at before though was who would be better equipped to 'resist the press' (basically keep possession under pressure, and importantly move it smoothly to fellow red-shirted players in good positions to build momentum and fluidity) - a midfield of Lars Bohinen and Andres Iniesta or a midfield of Geoff Capes and Usain Bolt?!

Ok, if we unearthed the new Johan Neeskens and new Patrick Vieira from somewhere that might be a very satisfactory middle ground, but how likely is that?!

I'd have to defer to those who didn't only try to listen on the radio (especially given these days Five Live doesn't seem to always be very descriptive about what is going on; seems a bit similar on TV games too - often the commentators go off on tangents), but I've read that the back 3, Colback and O'Brien had good games, but in that case who was it who was giving the ball away so much? Because that is a crucial part of the game - somebody once said something about football not being played in the clouds - how many times did those five players play it randomly into the clouds yesterday (like I say it's a question, and I don't know, but it seems like it must have been quite a few?).

I don't think the answer is more defensive players anyway myself. Newcastle's team and midfield wasn't particularly defensive at all itself was it? Better to replicate the positive approach rather than think buying a solid 'new Samba Sow' will neutralise it in my honest opinion.

I know it's the old days, but John McGovern wasn't a physical beast, and he was very tidy on the ball. David Phillips was getting a little slow, but still made for a good option at the base of midfield.

Yeah, if we can have a player or two that has strength and pace as well as skill and composure than great but I'd pick the latter over the former as a priority.

Plus we do have Yates, who while not especially quick, is certainly solid.

With that in mind I'd take a Garner or equivalent over a Freuler or equivalent for sure myself. In other words someone to compliment Yates rather than be an equivalent option. I don't know though maybe the plan is to get both, since it was even suggested Freuler might come on an obligation to buy loan. Depends how much is spent on MGW (or an equivalent attacking midfielder or two) and/or someone like Dennis (or alternatively a winger plus a striker, if those can't be loaned - same for a wing-back), but I suppose it's possible two more central midfielders will still arrive.

You can be a physical player without being a defensive player though, Joelinton ripped us apart in the centre and he's a converted striker, although in all honesty he played striker like he was a converted midfielder , but the point I'm getting at is he isn't particularly defensive same with Phillip Billing at Bournemouth, a 6'4 monster centre mid but not necessarily the most defensive, just very physically competitive. It does feel like we need somebody like that in midfield; Colback and O'Brien are both scrappy and not scared of a tackle but couldn't compete physically with Joelinton yesterday. Yates will offer more physicality but we could do with another in my opinion. When you're a team like us who won't see an awful lot of the ball physicality throughout the pitch is the bare minimum needed to compete, then you start worrying about technical ability.
