That's increasingly what is happening on this forum.

Ironic, considering the lack of internet at those times.
We are your olders and betters.
Show some f***ing respect.
We are older and wiser and we knew then the world was going to hell in a handcart.
You young boggers… you’re just not listening and look at the shit the world has become.
Old money, decent beer, proper music, The 2 Ronnies…
That was when life meant something.

But you know, we were happy in those days, but we were poor.

We lived for three months in a rolled up newspaper in a septic tank. We used to hadta get up a'six in the morning, clean da newspaper, eat a crusta stale bread, go to work down the mill, for a 14 hour day, week in week out for 6 pence a month, and when we got home, our dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt.

Yah, you try an tell the young people of today that, and they won't believe you...

The difference being in those days you could trust your neighbours

I think we are generally in information overload and it started with Clubcall 😅

Too much focus and coverage on the game and our club(s) now. Football was a weekend hobby with a few midweek games thrown in, the suspense waiting for the next game made it more exciting.
Now it’s on tv every night, talked about endlessly on radio (Talksport), pages of coverage in the press, internet forums, social media…

Somewhere along the line it became a bit boring due to the overload.

I used to love reading transfer rumours in the newspaper first thing in the morning or on teletext. Things weren't updated so quickly so you waited and didn't mind waiting. Everything was about patience and within your own daily routine.

Teletext was the most up to date thing back then to get your football news. That was where I first read that Shearer had moved for £15m to Newcastle for example.

Right now football and news is 24/7 in your face, updates and pings on your mobile phone constantly. Work is the same. Ping ping ping on your phone all day long. Updates about celebrities used to just be limited to magazines people would seek out if they were interested. I'm not interested myself. But that celeb nonsense is in your face aswell, whether you like it or not.

No wonder why anxiety levels are at an all time high.... 🫤

Completely agree Bryan.

Remember eagerly awaiting getting a copy of the Football Post on saturdays. Reading it back to front. Admiring the pictures. It was a highlight to top off the football weekend.

Now, 23:30 on a Tuesday night, I could tune into Talksport now and I bet some ‘pundit’ is waffling on about Ten Hag. There will be the same on tv somewhere and online.

I love football but its too much chat and speculation for me.

Agree about information overload. Just switched off the telly because they spent about 20 mins talking about one move from Tottingham to somewhere or other, endlessly repaeating themselves just because they had to fill the time.

I'm old, but I remember Sports Report starting and that was so exciting. Just to hear about the games on the day of the match and when they were in progress, even! Now I even turn live games off whilst they are in progress.

I'm sure there are football fans that don't join forums, read twitter, don't subscribe to SkySports and only get their updates on Sports Report at 5pm on a Saturday.

What kind of magik has a hold over you that you couldn't have that kind of simple relationship with the game?

I look at the youngsters and sometimes I wonder if they could leave their phone at home when they go out because they are permanently attached to the phone at all times.
Now I realise it's not just youngsters who do it.
We are here chatting about the same thing for days on end.
Before we had phones conversations used to move forward but now it's just side to side with no progress usually.
I think most of us need a digital detox.

I remember when I bought the bookshop and we had the computer installed. I loved it. Later had it networked and had to have cables in to connect the machine downstairs to the main one and the guy who came to do it was ex RN submariner off the nuclear subs and he was a Forest fan. Told me all about the internet (this was mid-90s I think) and about the forum on the OS. I was so excited, chat with other Forest fans! I was in heaven, I'd been living in a vacuum for so many years. Just me alone, a Forest fan, amongst all the other heathens.

I remember working out in Oz with a load of other Notts lads in 1988. The Mrs used to post the Football Post out every week - used to arrive on the following Friday - read every square inch of it before handing it round. We finished with it just in time to receive the next one

I think it’s because it’s there, you can’t help yourself.
It’s like going to a food buffet restaurant and trying not eat that extra portion of something you like.
