In other Refereeing news, Howard Webb has vowed to fight for his place in the Manchester United side, after manager Alex Ferguson dropped him in favour of Mark Clattenburg for the game against Chelsea.

Referees are better than they ever have been and I don't want any other methods brought in to officiate it.

As soon as the 'new' sky sports supporter and the money men get bored, leave, and give me my game back i'll be happy.

If referees are "just shit" then why waste your time complaining about them?

And there are no guys in your sunday league who are anywhere near being good enough to ref pro ball. I don't even need to be there to know that. Just not the way things work my friend. At all.

I'm not complaining about them. I'm saying that we're missing out on potential good refs because many will decide to drop it because it's not worth the hassle.

There are some genuine shockers at a Sunday league level, but also some very good ones who should be higher up. Having played up to a semi-pro level, I can tell you that without you needing to patronise me, especially considering the level I played at is going to be at least equal to that of the Canadian leagues.

Afraid some refs are just shit. See Stuart Attwell. Giving a goal for a shot which has not only not crossed the line, but wasn't even on target, is not a case of the game changing immeasurably nor managing personalties nor any perceived 'mental' aspect, it's just incompetence which he has repeated in multiple games.

Technology should be utilised but there needs to be a proper crackdown at the lower levels against teams who abuse referees. I've officiated a friendly game once and found it pretty easy (clearly, there's no comparison to a competitive match) but would you catch me wanting to be a ref for the long haul? Would I f***, not worth it. How many other potential referees who would be very good think this way?

But Robbie, if you've played at semi pro level, then you realize the distinction between operating in front of 40 people, and 2000.

And believe me, the best players in this city don't really think any different than you. Years ago, when I was a second year ref and moving real fast, I was sitting with 4 or 5 of the best players in this city. So, I ask them collectively "Who do you think is the best ref in this city?" andthey kinda look at each other for a second, exchange a couple of quick comments amongst themselves, and then one guy says "None of them". And I laugh. Alone. So it 's a tad awkward. I say, "awww, c'mon, one of these guys must stick out?" and the guy who replied thought for second and then stated "Naw, we hate them all" and then they all laugh. I have no idea what to do, so I just smile and walk away. Dealing with the abuses, right or wrong, is part and parcel of officiating football. I do realize rugby players don't act this way, and I applaud the mentality that rugby possesses. No pussies ion that sport, one way or the other.

2000? Not quite! Few hundred at most

Don't get me wrong, I realise it's not an automatic step up to the top level, but with any profession there's some very capable guys (and gals) who've been overlooked for someone who shouts the loudest.

Attwell managed to rise the ranks very quickly, going from just-turned-profession to Premier League in two seasons. Now, this may kinda prove your point that the step up is too big, but Attwell was ridiculed in his first season in League Two for being awful.

There are quite a few refs at the lower levels though who control games well whilst allowing them to flow. Not the majority of refs (those are either weaklings who let blatant fouls go, or far too controlling), but there are refs who could make the step up if given the right platform. Refs who I'm 99.99% sure wouldn't make the basic errors people like Attwell are making.

Yes, Atwell is a hugely perplexing chap. I've speculated he got up by politics. The players show him a level of disrespect that is quite comical. When he is "man-managing " the players one on one, the players odn't even listen to him. Isn't he demoted to the Championship this year?

I quite like Oliver though, very sure he'll make it. He's had a few tough calls lately, but that's life.

The other young guy from the Derby game with us, he looked like a guy being pushed too soon.

And I'm a good example of a guy who didn't play politics well, and I got shunted aside because a couple of guys in the heirarchy never gave me a shot at a certain time. Not that I'd have been FIFA lol. Started around 35 as my playing days were winding down.

I have officiated with the man and his dog on the line, a decent local crowd and several decent gates in the old Central Midlands League Prem division, to be honest, I found the smaller the crowd, the clearer one heard the insults, the larger the crowd, it becomes a collective noise.

Some Referees are absolute and utter shite, with huge ego's, some are cowards and I have no idea why they bother, some hide behind the badge and the laws of the game some were bullied in school. Some are good and others are very good.

I was fast tracked, the handling and training was intense as one was thoroughly prepared for the next step up, unfortunatly family circumstances dictated that I could not continue........wonder from time to time, where I would have peaked at ?

Looks like Clattenburg could be shown the race card:

Time to mic up referees. The irony being, it should have happened a long time ago, but the authorities didn't want everyone to hear the swearing, abuse, and constant questioning of decisions aimed at the ref by players. Hopefully what comes out of this is that players will begin getting booked and fined for these things.

Yeah, this is a very massive accusation. And Clattenberg's comments on Bellamy (a few years back)don't bode well for him.

If the accusations are false, then Clattenberg should sue them. Chelsea's history on this (see the Frisk debacle) and it's coin toss on who is guilty here.

Btw, did anyone see the insane not offside/offside stuff in the Juventus game? That reeked of match-fixing, to be honest. It was incredible.

referees are humans and the expectations for perfection are far too much. technology will go on to fail at some point so bringing that in is pointless as well. This goal line tech for example if a player is flying over the line to clear the ball who is to say the laser won't register a goal even though it may not be?

Clattenberg is a good referee he makes mistakes as he did on Sunday but why should good refereeing over years be over looked because of one bad decision? It's like dropping a goalkeeper and forever regarding them as shit because of one error.

If the racism accusations are true then they should be obviously pursued and he should get a punishment... Find talk of his career being ended over it baffling though. If Suarez only deserves a ban then why doesn't a referee deserve the same, but worse instead?

I think it'd be fairly simple to fit refs with one of those ultra-light cigarette-size head-mounted cameras that some police wear.

Let us see what the ref saw.

The tv viewer gets to judge the ref based on 20 slo-mo, hi-def, zoomed-in replays that the ref didn't see, can't see & can't ask for,, and that's not fair.

Let's see what Clattenburg saw.

Maybe from his specific point of view, real time, one view, it was unquestionably a dive.

Maybe from his point of view it was a foul, but he just sent Torres off cos he doesn't like him.

Maybe someone blocked his view at the crucial moment & he interpreted or guessed.

Until we see what he saw, we won't know how what or why.

Give me ref-cam.

:D Brilliant!

It's a nuclear argument that Chelsea have unleashed however.

Option A: Clattenberg called Mikel a monkey.
In the current climate, in the present circumstances, I find this pretty much impossible to believe.
While I think Clattenburg is a knob, I can't believe he'd use terms like that, here, today.

If Chelsea are fibbing, for whatever reason - either to f*** him over or to prevent him refereeing them again (read: trying to influence the administration & hence the outcome of games by interference) then I also find this hard to swallow, and they'd need & deserve the book throwing at them.

Either way, it's going to end badly.
