Recognition of Mr Clough's right-hand man

I know I'm going over old ground here somewhat, but I'm bringing up our club's lack of recognition of Peter Taylor and his work alongside Brian Clough because I have an idea in mind that might address this.

During my typical match day I enjoy walking down the Trent and round to the Brian Clough stand after getting fish and chips on Radcliffe Road, even though it would be quicker to go the other way. This is a bit of a pre-match ritual I suppose, and I think of that stretch between Trent Bridge and Lady Bay Bridge as the City Ground's very own 'Wembley Way'. It's always lively, helps to form the City Ground's great setting, and is often used for the generic shots on TV. Google maps tells me that this stretch of road/walkway (cars do go down it sometimes) is called Trentside North, but I think it'd be great if it was renamed Peter Taylor Way.

I would think the that only expense would be the raising of signs at the bases of the two bridges to recognise this (but we could make these nice and build them out of bricks or stone), and Nottinghamshire County Council would probably have to agree to it. It seems that the club's owners plan to remain at the City Ground so we might as well use part it's fine location to honour someone who was instrumental in the formation of our greatest team.

I look forward to reading any opinions on this.

It's s nice idea but there are several businesses along there so a full change if name but be difficult with consent of all. Your more likely to get something within the ground.

A valid point, and one that I hadn't considered. On the other hand, Brian Clough Way starts at the roundabout at the top of Maid Marian Way, and there are more businesses on the stretch between there and Canning Circus alone than between the two bridges, so I guess it could be worth looking at how that was worked out.

Maybe a dual name is the answer?

When they rebuild the main stand name it after him? Or you can always name that road after him and still keep the road name - i.e. Brian Clough Way - A52

I've long thought that we should do something to recognise Peter Taylor, however opinion tends to be polarised on him. It depends if you can get over him retiring and then coming back to manage Derby (and nicking John Robertson). Cloughie long regretted not reconciling with his old mate before he passed away so I don't see why anyone else should bear a grudge either.

As others on this forum with verify Mark Arthur once stated that we would never do anything to honour PT because of the Derby thing, maybe he was trying to score some popularity points. However he's gone now.

I always thought the Clough stand should be the Clough and Taylor stand. It's a monument to their achievements and also part of the catalyst of what dismantled them.

Id rename the main stand the Peter Taylor stand personally. Get a petition going and tweet it to Fawaz, it will be changed in a week.

JR now admits he regrets going to D***y. Perhaps PT would, as well.

So we could call the stairs up to the BC Stand 'The Peter Taylor stairs', after all, he assisted BC up the league.

More of a Derby thing to do. Clough achieved plenty after Taylor went back (stealing our best player away whilst he was at it). Great respect for the man, of course, but if we're gonna start renaming stands and landmarks etc, there are three or four notable candidates more deserving of recognition than Taylor.

Its arguable that with Taylor's assistance we would never have achieved anything since 1976. Without the success of 1976 - 1980 would the success of 1989 - 1990 (plus the two cup final losses 91 & 92) have happened? Can the two be considered in isolation or is the latter dependent on the former?

Success or obscurity with Clough alone at the helm - either is possible but its pure conjecture as we were most successful with both at the helm.

As you say, pure conjecture. Perhaps if Peter Taylor never joined up with Clough in the first place, we'd have won nine consecutive European Cups, two Superbowls and one Britain's Got Talent. No point dealing in hypotheticals.

If Peter Taylor gets a statue/stand/street in his honour before John Robertson, then there's something very wrong with the world. To be honest, I think most Forest fans have been guilt tripped into wanting this by Derby fans who frequently claim some phoney moral superiority over us, on account of having honoured both Clough and Taylor at Pride Park.

He was obviously an integral part of our golden period, but personally, I think if we're determined to build another statue, we ought top be looking at Robertson, McGovern, Shilton and even Psycho as having the most pressing claim.

Ha! Glad to see my position is consistent over that timespan. That's unusual :D

This thread dates from just over 5 years ago - almost a year before Derby proposed their statue so "guilt tripping" doesn't really come into it.

Like I said earlier opinion on Taylor is divided, we all have our own and that's fair enough for me.

Well, I didn't suggest that no one knew who he was until Derby's statue went up. I just think it's become a fan hobby horse in the wake of thier tribute; they've got one so we want one. Five years ago, I'm not sure that was the case.

Maybe it has become something along those lines for some people and that shouldn't be the reason for doing it, I wouldn't disagree with you on that.

For me, being an older chap now (amazing how being nearly 50 sneaks up on you) that "grew up" with BC and PT as a team and its how I remember them.

Also how come no one holds the fact that John Robertson (my all time favourite player) left us for Derby, his choice - no one was holding a gun to his head. Is it because he came back? If PT had come back would he have been forgiven? Who knows?

I remember Brian being interviewed in the seats of the CG and he said "If you're loyal, you're loyal. If you're not, you're not " He spoke of Peter Taylor and we shouldn't honour him here. That's IMO ....

Maybe we should mirror what the sheep have done and have a Clough & Taylor statue outside the City Ground (Brian Clough Stand car park)..

But go one better, and have them lifting the European Cup together!

Read 'Those Forest Men'.
I talk to Robbo about his Derby days.

He also said

“I’m not equipped to manage successfully without Peter Taylor. I am the shop window and he is the goods.” Brian Clough.

and

“To Peter,” it read. “Still miss you badly. You once said: ‘When you get shot of me there won’t be as much laughter in your life.’ You were right.”

He still never spoke to Taylor again after the Robbo incident ......
