Prediction time

Where's me hammer?
Prediction time folks.

One thing that has been quite noticeable over the last few months was the shift from posters who were happy to just improve on staying up on goal difference in the summer....to nothing being good enough at the back end of this season.

So im starting a thread free hopefully of the endless managerial debate....all i wanna know is if the season started tomorrow with the current squad

A) Where do you think the current squad would will finish?

B) Where do you think the squad should finish?

C) Where are you happy with the current squad to finish?

Three little numbers, no he said she said... all being well the question can be asked again when the transfer window slams shut and the around Christmas time.

Im aware two teams in this division are yet to be decided as are the futures of loan players... but that was the case last year so come on, what you happy with?

How can one make predictions without knowing transfer policy, transfer budget and actual players coming in?

I am optimistic the desire is there and we will finish higher than Derby next season and they will finish just short of the Playoffs.

You will know that when the questions asked again in August and at Christmas.

Quite a few people were happy with not relying on goal difference to stay up at this exact point last year so im asking what are peoples opinions at this point.

A) 18th
B) 12th
C) 12th

All irrelevant though because if we've changed managers to maintain position the owners want f***ing.

Last year predicted 62 points, 13th place, and they missed that by a mile. This year I am going to say they will achieve it, but with a lower points total.
So 13th 60 points.

First Team Squad
With the same squad we would end up roughly in the same place, as from div 1 the teams coming up are better than the teams going down. The teams coming down from Premiership though are dreadful and will find the Championship much harder than when they left it. So, around 16th for all 3 options. Our real issue is scoring goals, Brereton will get better, Murphy if he can be arsed would also make a difference.

A) Upper mid-table
B) Mid-table
C) Mid-table

We finished 3 points better off than last season.
With the teams coming down from Premiership and up from League 1 next season is gonna be harder than ever.
Massive investment is needed to challenge but that won’t happen.
Squad needs overhauling big time.
If we’re not challenging for play offs by Xmas the manager will probably get fired.
Relegated from Prem in 98/99 season so 20 years in wilderness. We have missed out on so much money that we are now so far behind so many teams it’s scary, yet reality seems so far off for so many fans.
We’re a Championship club and nothing more at best.
A settled period is needed and time for the manager a necessity if we are to harbour any real ambitions of promotion.
I love this club but a reality check is imperative after the last 20 years.

So, same players to start the season as finished it, and Karanka in from the start of the season.
It is all a bit complex what with players on loan to the club and from the club, and a full season of the same manager, who only had half a season with us this term.
Still, I think I see the point of this thread!
The current squad would finish pretty much where we finished this season - 17th, but I think there will be more points required to achieve that.
Where should the squad finish? - the league doesn't lie over 46 games, and the squad as is is capable of finishing ... 17th.
I would not be overly happy at 17th, but if nothing changes (very unlikely) I think it would be where we do finish.
Where would I be happy for us to finish with the current squad... I would be delighted if we finished in the top 6... but merely happy for top 10.

Nice dig Barry. The posters who changed from being happy with mid-table to being disappointed with nothing being good enough were just following everyone else's lead pal.

Lot's of backtracking on this thread already. Absolutely no one, NO ONE, has gone for a top six finish despite multiple claims last year that the squad prior to the injection of quality in January was good enough for it. Has the confidence drained already that we might not be up to it after all?

A) 12th-18th
B) Top six, as determined by the actions of the club which should be matched by transfer activity. (If we weren't being led by those actions then my answer would be same as A)
C) Irrelevant question. I'd be happy if the club had some tangible progression again.

This forum is usually less reactionary than the general atmosphere at the club, so may I be the first to point out that if we're mired in mid-table again next season then the pressure will be on the manager whether we like it or not. See the club video put out after the Bolton game, they're clearly gearing up for the expectation of a top six push.

Thread is about two months too early.

For what it’s worth, at the moment, I’ll go:

12th, 12th, 12th.

That might of course change if we properly throw some money at it and actually sign some halfway decent footballers instead of the usual fare NFFC bring in, which tends to be a mix of castoffs, crocks and players nobody else wants.

It’s getting tougher and tougher to compete in this league, not helped by the ever increased number of clubs whose budgets are still to an extent bankrolled by the division above.

Perversely, the best way seems to be to throw money at it and then at least have a go, and if it doesn’t work, you sell a few and rebuild, to stay within FFP. It’s a bit shit, but that’s the bed the Football League has made itself, to gather the crumbs scattered from the top division’s table.

I’m for building, but I’m not sure that will ever work any more, if we take 2-3 years to build a team, that’s a couple more seasons here in the Championship with our £20m-odd turnover whilst other clubs have £60m-£70m to play with.

Chuck some cash at it, like Wolves did, and see what happens.

We’ve been mediocre for twenty years, this might be our best and last chance to break out of this shit League.

We simply have to chuck some cash at it Chris else Karanka will end up in the same boat as Warbo - too high expectations from all involved at the club for the quality of squad he has to choose from.

We all know what happens when we're in that scenario.

I echo these sentiments.

We've tried the slow-and-steady approach (sort of) and it's got us nowhere

Financially we're in decent shape. We've got a manager with promotion from this league on his CV. Time to bring in the big guns player-wise.

I predict Karanka will finish the season with his career in a better position than Billy's. Therefore superior. Or smarter. Or both.
