I do love looking at all the statistical analysis stuff, but so much of that is dictated by a players role and the players around him.

It’s always a cool tool to get yourself acquainted with a new player, but I’d say no more accurate a representation than fan opinion. Excited for this one
that's exactly what it's for - it's like a jigsaw.

A player like Mangala can receive the ball from the defence and find a player who can take a ball on the transition.

It requires you to have those players.

This isn't new. A traditional number 9 who can take a 60 yard punt on the chest and hold up play, needs a) players who can punt a ball upfield with accuracy and b) players who can pick-up a knock-down on the fly.

It's what managers have always done.

What analytics allows for is for you to find the pieces of your jigsaw in wider pool.

His progressive passes are so low because he looks at what's in front of him and thinks 'f*** that, I'll carry it mesen.'

Also, good points re: the squad at the outset of the window. We are a bit of anomaly as it might be argued that promoted teams in the past have had much stronger squads than us and, therefore, haven't had to invest so heavily. Especially, those bouncing back after one-three years. Some still invested. And, for me, that is why some of those teams that invested heavily on top of having good squads (hello Fulham) struggled with the influx of new players. Some of those left would have thoughts they were good enough for the EPL. How many of those we had left could, honestly, have said that?

Looks like what we need from the 2 minute video. Can take the ball well on first touch and lay it off quickly or jink past an opponent. Seems quite strong too. Long passing a bit awry but shouldn't need to do that in this setup. His main job will be getting it to Lingard (and Johnson if we play 2x #10s). Perhaps would have preferred someone a bit taller/stronger still and more well rounded but might have had to pay twice the price to get that player.

that's call progressive carry, also in the box above
Cheers! What I do know is he has 5 contributions last season and Yates had 11 I think but obviously mangala was a higher level. So will he he get more contribution than Yates would? That’s the question and I don’t know the answer but trusting coops and Murphy.

Agreed, this is the main difference between us and Fulham. The bought all new players and then left all the players that actually got them up in the background, no doubt with a bad taste in their mouths which won’t be good for squad dynamics and integration. All those who got us up as part of the starting 11 and regular subs who are left will be involved still.

Looks like a dribble machine (99%), but scared of passing forward (progressive passes 5%???!) Defensive contribution weak as both sites rate him
P/S: all those % percentile are: Player compared to positional peers in Men's Big 5 Leagues and European Competition over the last 365 days.

I looked at all the Fbref stuff early on as well and it's a real headscratcher because those stats seem at complete odds with all his highlight videos, usually you can make the link between the statistical stuff and the videos but not with him. But he's definitely the man that Coops wants out of all of the centre mids we've been linked with so he'll do for me!

Yeah, I can't really understand the mentality that poor teams can't have good players on them. Good teams can have shite players in them if they have enough quality or playing style to mitigate.

Probably announced on Wednesday, if the previous transfer timelines are anything to go by.

Most likely the case; medical done and deal signed one day, then press stuff and announcements the next day seems to be the norm this summer.

You'd be blind and deaf to not think Mangala or any other play from a shit top flight teams aren't good. Cornet is another player who played for a terrible team, but he's still worth quite a bit because we all know he's GOOD.

At some point, I'm hoping to do profiles for our squad based on SmarterScout data, but it's a bit of work and I'm too busy/lazy. But, briefly, to compare some defensive stats for our likely midfielders (hopefully). Last year's numbers adjusted for the Premier League standard:

Ryan Yates:
Defending quantity 80
Defending quality 39
Disrupting play 80
Recover* 27
Link up passing 41
Aerial duels open play 83
Aerial duels dead balls 96
Ground duels in possession 36
Ground duels out of possession 64

Lewis O'Brien:
Defending quantity 93
Defending quality 24
Disrupting play 44
Recover* 74
Link up passing 64
Aerial duels open play 31
Aerial duels dead balls 39
Ground duels in possession 98
Ground duels out of possession 26

Orel Mangala (CM):
Defending quantity 65
Defending quality 80
Disrupting play 5
Recover* 16
Link up passing 95
Aerial duels open play 27
Aerial duels dead balls 5
Ground duels in possession 56
Ground duels out of possession 68

Orel Mangala (DM):
Defending quantity 18
Defending quality 66
Disrupting play 1
Recover* 1
Link up passing 91
Aerial duels open play 13
Aerial duels dead balls 3
Ground duels in possession 54
Ground duels out of possession 58

* Recovering a moving ball, so interceptions, 2nd balls, loose passes, etc.

So, from the above you could surmise that Yates and O'Brien are busier defenders and better at closing space and pressing, but Mangala is better at getting a foot in when he chooses to make a tackle, with Yates only marginally behind in ground duels. Yates is, hands down, the best in the air, whilst O'Brien appears the best at interceptions and recoveries. Both O'Brien and Mangala appear highly press resistant in terms of dribbling or passing their way out of trouble.

I imagine that Yates will be complimented by one of O'Brien or Mangala in a midfield 2 and would expect us to look at bringing in another midfielder with similar aerial ability, or they play as a three, but that still leaves is without any cover for young Ryan. Though perhaps us playing with 3 central defenders mitigates that somewhat.

Whatever, we appear to be getting some genuine options in midfield which compliment one another.

Hope this makes sense. Was hot at work, so already on the beers. And apologies to Jack and Cafu, but couldn't be bothered to type up their numbers.

Edit: Mangala's number for the 2018-19 season are much more aggressive, so he can do it, if needed, but he's never going to be particularly effective in the air:

Defending quantity 96
Defending quality 9
Disrupting play 81
Recover* 19
Link up passing 53
Aerial duels open play 27
Aerial duels dead balls 5
Ground duels in possession 56
Ground duels out of possession 68

The Bundesliga, Welsh National Team and Forest academy are combining into a single side ready to storm the Prem.

We're going to put a few noses out of joint next season.
As long as those noses are :
Bournemouth - tosser of a manager
Everton - see above
Newcastle - blood money
West Ham - salty
Man Utd - need a reason?
Chelsea- stolen wealth
Leeds- need a reason?

14 wins and we are well safe.....

Wow that's all from one game. Likes to get involved then
Seems to get involved.

From the videos I've seen, he looks like his job is get the ball under control and the team going again. That was one area Garner excelled at.

This video is longer and has more variation in it. But i think you can see he is very composed on the ball and creates order out of chaos.
