Looking again,I think the 4977 figure must be fairly recent (considering the 1st Division was
reduced to less than 22 teams for 2 or 3 seasons in the late 80s/early 90s and the Premier
League has mainly had 20 teams).
We’ll certainly reach the 5000th league game landmark soon (most probably in this
calendar year).

I seem to recall us ending up selling Carlos Merino to AB because he was a Basque and could only sign players from the Basque region. He was one of the brighter spots of the Platt era...

It's up to date, the data publisher just replied to me.

So we're now at 4978.

5000th league game will be the 16th game of next season.

Of course, the 4,058 games mentioned at the beginning of this topic included wartime matches which were not league games. I suppose that has been factored into the calculations? Be interesting to see the actual number of games the club has played since formation, including those early matches, FA Cup games plus all the other different competitions. Proper games of course, not the odds and sods which litter the history books.
