The Athletic came out with an interesting stat today...

It's the great #NFFC achievement most fans have never heard of.

For 4,058 successive games, the club have picked a 'homegrown' player in their senior matchday squad - a sequence stretching back to 1941.

But how long can that run last?

There are some seriously good players on that list.

That was kind of my next question - how does this compare with the other 91?

First Team Squad
The article came about after some work about Manchester United who beat it with even stricter criteria (all players signed by 18, whereas a handful of Forest's inclusions were older), going back to 1937, to which no one comes remotely close (Ajax 1982 the closest). Everton, Palace and Crewe the other teams mentioned with long consecutive records but the work not been done on those.

This is just Yatesy keeping this run going at the mo right? As soon as he's dropped the streak breaks?

I think homegrown counts as anyone who has gone through a club's youth system in that country at a certain time.
So not just Yatesy but also someone like Neco Williams, Taiwo, Wood, MGW...

For Forest it's first professional club.
So MGW doesn't count towards this analysis.
So they mean club-trained as opposed to homegrown then lol

I think they mean that the player made his first professional appearance for the club. They specifically say - in Forest's case- they don't necessarily have to have been an academy player or played for the youth team.
So I presume Matty Cash would count as despite being a Wycombe youth player he didn't play for the first team.

Not sure how they deal with players from semi pro clubs like Birtles or McCleary.

Wasn't Cash let go and picked up by us from some halfway house academy setup? Nike was it? Or was that Jorge Grant (or both?).

Brereton was Stoke irrc, but he still played for our academy sides so he's ours as far as I'm concerned (and id have him back next year).

Sauce salad?
Yes.

He left Wycombe, IIRC they disbanded their academy, and went to a private academy. He was 17 when he arrived at the NDA.
I think Grant was picked up at the same time. He didn't get quite as far as Cash but has had a decent career. Up in Scotland at the minute - Dundee iirc.

Criteria was that it must be their first club, they must have played for the youth team, not just reserves and must have started under 18 with the club
If that's the case I do find it very hard to believe that we've had such a player in every matchday squad since 1941

Incredible if true though

Its true.

I had stuff with players going back to 1945, Matt, David and Dan pushed it further.
The only club who can challenge it (with their criteria) are Manchester United.

They use a slightly different criteria than the Man Utd version, which is

The first was that United had to be the player’s first professional team. The second was that the player had to have joined the club before turning 18. And third, the player had to appear for the youth team, not just the reserves.

The Forest version differed on the age criteria

This, to be clear, was using slightly different criteria to Park’s research. A handful of players in Forest’s case were over the age of 18 when they signed.

@Matt Were you involved with this?
