A question for those familiar with German football (...): any thoughts on Hoffenheim's Diadié Samassékou, set to be our latest signing?

Just turned it on and Bowler gave away a cheap free kick.

Ball played in from the free kick by Chris Gunter (not that one) and a glancing header in.

0-1 after four mins.

What's going wrong out there?
1. Last season was bad. For a number of reasons, almost all players looked both burnt out (without stamina, speed, explosion) and to have forgotten football. The manager ran out of ideas, and settled for domestic wins with 0,5-0. It was obvious that a major overhaul was needed, and that overhaul should have probably included the manager. Instead, the manager stayed, and almost no reinforcement came.

2. Preseason was exceptionally hard, according to all reports, perhaps because the manager wanted to improve basic athletic features in a long and difficult season. The result was that legs were exceptionally stiff in the crucial CL preliminary rounds. We got eliminated and the manager was fired.

3. Reinforcement continued to come too little too late. And some of the new recruits were very poor choices. Moreover, there seemed to be a clear liquidity problem: there were loans, players on a free, many contracts were extended in order to alleviate wage cost. We all thought that the money ran out. The new manager did not have time to build a team and he did not have the tools to build a new team. Results were poor. As always when results are poor, anxiety settled in in the minds of both the players and the manager. And every match was worse than the previous one.

4. And then all of a sudden, someone said “let there be money”. Pep Biel, Marcelo, James, Bakambu, Samassékou. The last three came so late that they don’t have the right to play in Europe. The fans were delighted, I was furious. If there was money, why weren’t some of those moves made in May, rather than September? Had they brought players sooner, CL qualification (which is worth 40m minimum) might have been possible.

5. Even worse, no one knows who made those choices: there is no DoF, no general manager, no plan in sight. Corberan will most certainly be fired after tonight’s match, by far the worse I’ve seen us in over a decade, with clueless players and manager. And the cycle will continue, with no end in sight.

I’m feeling your pain GBG
We’ve been on that manager merry go round for a number of years.
Hopefully someone within has a plan in place.

Brilliant analysis GBG.
How did Josh bowler and the token South Koream marketing strategy play?

There's no point in analyzing individual performances in what was a really embarassing overall performance.

So far, Bowler looks ineffective (he tries to dribble past two and three opponents) and is, surprisingly, not diligent in his defensive duties. Hwang looks worse and worse each game he plays. A mystery, given he was a prolific scorer in France. As I've said before, the other Hwang (the midfielder is excellent), easily the best of our transfers so far, along with Pep Biel.

Reappointing Michel who was fired around 7 years ago.

Laurent Blanc was apparently the first choice but personal terms couldn’t be agreed.
