Neco Shay Williams

Definitely not controversial in my opinion, I think prior to Niakhaté getting injured he looked like the stand out signing with Neco just behind but following the injury Neco has stood out massively

Just looks natural at this level, and the best part is you can tell there's still plenty of room for improvement. Shout out to O'Brien too who has seemingly took like a duck to water, shows a little naivety at times but it's early days in a demanding position within an even more demanding system (for central midfielders) that he's still learning

Hendo of course has also been stand out but we already knew what to expect from him

I'm not sold still.

Yes he looks good going forward but he's a bit of a liability defensively.

I don't yet think we've got an upgrade on Spence (although that could change).

Worth remebering weve not got a player here with heaps of experience, just a very good player with very limited experience and as good as he is already, he'll just get better and better.

Hes a far more complete player than Spence, his passing is exeptional and he can do it with both feet. Nothing for me suggests that we didnt get the better deal, and better potential with Neco over Spence.

Williams is definitely the more intelligent and well rounded player, Spence was a joy to watch because he had ridiculous amounts of raw pace that left people for dead. He was far from perfect defensively though and often relied heavily on his recovery speed as a get out of jail free card

Our best player against City, imho. Different sort than Djed, and we have yet to see how Djed fares against Premier League strikers/wingers. I think pretty much every wingback/fullback struggles defensively these days. Nigel Winterburn is not the template these modern WB/FBs are built on.

Agree.

They are different players for sure, my reason for commenting was the constant comparisons based on the potential signing of both.

Id say Djeds limitations will be exposed more than Necos at this level though.

He's been one of our best signings for me. A very different player to Spence though which I think both Brennan and Worrall have discovered.

As he's so different to Spence we have to adjust the way we play and I think we've badly missed that pace out wide we had last season. It will help Williams massively now we've signed Lodi for the other side as let's be honest Toffolo has done OK but won't occupy opposition in the same way.

Can'tjudge him on last night's performance, but at the moment I am undecided as to his defensive abilities.
And that is leaving Worrall a bit exposed.

Nothing against Williams but I'm not sure exactly what he has he done to be in a team of the month?

No goals, no assists, and part of the second worst defence in the league so far. I like him, but it's an odd choice.

He has probably been our biggest threat going forward in terms of creating chances and having chances himself. It is only a matter of time before he puts up goals and assists.

They probably watched him kick the ball.........
I think that's going to cost him a place to Qatar. He would get in as a pure goalkeeper no doubt but Southgate loves the keepers who can pass accurately and quickly too.

So who really thinks this is worth paying 17m for now? I get there's potential as he's still only a kid but his end product is awful, he seems to be lacking in tactical awareness and a bit of maturity, and has had a fair few of tricky opponents.

From the time we have seen him, Aurier looks a much better option when he's fit, at both ends of the pitch.

Williams regards himself as a WING back.
The problem is, as a winger he has a lack of pace, can't dribble, and his crossing is inaccurate.
His shooting is also poor.
As back, he has forgotten about positioning, the need to avoid getting wrong side of your man, and not diving in.
As a professional footballer, he has forgotten to avoid letting the opposition wind you up, and that there are no prizes or squaring up to opponents when they have wound you up.
In the early games of this season he looked better than he is because Steve Cooper elected to play open, attacking football.
We shipped goals like the Titanic shipped ice cubes and cold sea water.
When Steve Cooper revised the style to secure the holes in the sides of the boat, Williams proved to be a bit of a colander, rather than a boiler plate.
I predict he will finish up playing for some mid-Championship nothing club.

Seeing as £17m pretty much gets you an average squad player in this league I'm not sure we can complain.
