VP is with me, back in the 60's I'll have you know.
To be fair I could have picked most eras up until very recently. I just think the role of a centre half can still be the big, strong lump. But has also changed massively as the game has. Having said that you’d often have one lump and one with a bit of pace or a bit better with his feet. How tall was Colin cooper? Chets was the lump and cooper was about 5ft10 or 5ft 11 and had a turn of pace and was a good little footballer.

The main thrust of my argument was obviously that Murillo is a good player (as was Des Walker) but we need strength and height allied to his exceptional qualities. Why are we always being done at set pieces? Because the big tall headers of the ball that we have, seem to have been injured during the season, leaving Murillo exposed with young Omo.
Only joshing with you mate. I agree Murillo and Boly is an ideal pairing.

The game is also less physical and route one when Cannavaro was in his pomp too. Franco Baresi is another good example, probably the best in the world at times in his career, he was 5'9". Ivan Cordoba, another great at CB and only 5'8". Bobby Moore was only 5'10". I think like others have said, he's only young and in his first full season and he's had far too much to do.

If it guaranteed he'd be here for the next 4 seasons I'd honestly sell Gibbs-White over him. MGW is great but he just cant can't shoot, we need goals from a number 10 in the 4231 and he doesn't provide any.
I think for his first full season in a foreign country, his first full pro season, his first spell in the best league in the world (possibly) he has been remarkably good. Remember last season whenever we had 4 at the back we were getting run around all over the place. Calm, good anticipation, a turn of pace, strong. Even without his amazing ability on the ball I think he’s a top defender personally.

There's quite rightly a lot of buzz about him, if you helicopter him into a side that has more possession and doesn't get bombarded with high balls into the box constantly you've got a hell of a CB. He's a top 6 CB for sure.
i think whichever team you helicopter Murillo into will find itself dealing with a lot of high balls.

He's a fantastic footballer, but yes, agree he's better alongside a big commanding experienced type. I'm a little sad I only got to see him and Felipe a couple of times (I forget the exact number, but whatever it was it's not enough).

Makes the helicopter a good idea then.

Martínez is only 5’9.

Fulham away. That was enough. West Ham at home, Murillo spares Felipe's blushes.

Now, Murillo with last season's Felipe would have been better viewing.

Wasn't Des Walker 5'9 or 5'10?

Could read the game as well as any defender back then. If any forward player did happen to get around him he'd usually have the pace to get himself out of trouble.

"You'll never beat Des Walker".

I like them both individually, but I don’t think Murillo + Omo has enough experience, strength, or command in the air . Boly makes a massive difference to how imposing the defence is.
That season where Forest were so close to promotion under Paul Hart, Des Walker alongside Michael Dawson was a perfect partnership for both of them. If you're a young defender, you need someone who's been around the block to help you learn your trade. Experience is key.

I once offered Des the use of my French holiday cottage; he said, „You’ll never gîte Des Walker…“

I agree with the fact he'd be better paired with an experienced "stopper". I like the idea of Boly/Murillo with Omo/Niakhate to replace the pairing if 1 of the other 2 isn't available. Gives us 2 good RCB/LCB pairings imo. Good youngster with a more experienced head.

Loved them together at the back. Dawson was like the artillery that Des kept putting into position, and then Des just swept up anything Dawson missed, which wasn't much. If only Boly and Felipe weren't crocked, I think they could have been ideal partners for him. If we do stay up, and Murillo stays, and we have any money to spend/are allowed to spend, a real dominant centre half is where we should be investing.

We also need another striker. We simply can't rely on Taiwo with his constant injuries.

There was a diminutive Italian lad, Cannavaro his name. He didn't do too badly for a sub-six foot centre back. In time, Murillo will improve his defending in the air, and hopefully it's while he is with Forest. He's not really the problem though; our coaching staff have to do a much better job organizing the rest of the defence for dead balls.

Having stood next to him a few times I very much doubt he's taller than 5'8.
How long ago did you stand next to him? At his age he's probably lost a few inches. 'Cos he's well old.

Call him all you like, there were few better central defenders than Desmond Sinclair Walker.
