Most pointless penalty ever...

That's ridiculous!

Plus, a £20k fine, but they onlyhave to pay £5k of it!

I bet even Warnock didn't get wound up by that.

I would have made their chairman have a haircut on the pitch before a game.

Perhaps because the game was against Sheff Utd, and they have a history of appealing against ineligible players, the FL thought it might be best to get a punishment in there before Sheff utd can bitch and moan and claim they should be in the Premiership.

If it'd happened mid-season, there'd have been uproar. A better penalty would be to have a loan embargo placed on the club in question.

I think the 'penalty' would have been suitable only if Palace were playing the Blunts in the last game of the season and the Blunts had to win to get promoted and the ineligable player scored the equaliser with the final kick of the match, apart from that its a shameful decision.

No wonder my post count..
What would have happened if.....

it was Preston who got the point deducted, with their play off spot being replaced by Cardiff. I imagine their fans would have been in uproar.

Hmm, I kind of think some of you are going over the top.

Yes it is barely a punishment, but Palace haven't committed any great crime. A simple clerical mistake, that's all.

The lad in question had earned them one point tops (which they have now lost) making precisely bugger all difference to the final standings, so what's the big issue?

What sort of a name is Rui Fonte with an accent on the e?

He must be gay or lesbian surely?

Why not apply the 1 point deduction next season, since there is no change in league position, so that Palace will feel some punishment for ignoring the rules.

Southampton will start next season on -10 points because they finished in a position where to deduct 10 points this season would be pointless. Crystal Palace finished this season in a position where to deduct 1 point would be pointless, yet the punishment was still applied this season.

Who were that non league team that gone done a load of points for fielding an 'illegal' player when it was an FA cock up?

I bet they're finding this a little baffling.

Mansfield too come to think of it.

Good point LewSton. Although a mere 1 point deduction any season is a laughable punishment for any team, atleast if it were to happen next season it might atleast have some sort of effect on Palace.

Exactly. There's no telling if it will have any bearing on them next season, but it definitely doesn't this year. They don't even drop a place in the table!

When have they ever done that? :nowink:

I was at a mates house who supports Sheffield United when I heard about this.

Amusingly they sat there stern faced before coming out with "Why is it always f***ing us? Why does it always have to cost us?"

I calmly pointed out it made no difference because Birmingham won on the last day anyway but got the response "It's still always us though" laughing at that moment apparently wasn't the right thing to do.

To be fair the punishment is more of a warning than anything, a bit token. It's one of those where the emphasis is more do it again and you've had it sunshine.

Rumour has it Osama Bin Laden was on the verge of agreeing a takeover deal for Sheffield United when at the last moment he got cold feet, and decided to pour his unlimited funds into sponsoring Islamic Jihad against the Western world, and setting up terrorist training camps in the lawless area around the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Imagine how different things would be up the M1 now.

Palace only gained one point for fielding this player, hence the one point punishment. The fine should have been a lot heftier though
