Messi, Pele line up for Farnborough

Bizarre goings on at my home town club. Is it April 1st?

http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/229595.html

Non-league Farnborough have pulled off a pre-season coup the likes of which David Moyes and Arsene Wenger can only dream of as they prepare to field Lionel Messi, Franz Beckenbauer and Pele.

Every player in the Farnborough squad has changed his name by deed poll to that of a legend who plays or played in their position - though one has chosen John Terry.

As a result, Jose Mourinho - the manager followed suit - can select a midfield featuring George Best, Paul Gascoigne, Zinedine Zidane and Johan Cruyff. The first team will be coached by Sir Alex Ferguson, while the club kit man is now Terry Venables.

Farnborough have asked for clearance from the Conference South to add the players' names to the backs of their shirts, the dream-child of their new sponsor. In the interests of impartiality the sponsor cannot be named, but assistant manager Paddy Power is all too aware who is behind the stunt, which has landed the club a six-figure sum.

That is truly hilarious.

Fair play to Farnborough, fantastic stunt!

It's pretty embarrassing all things told.

They're being paid for it, plus their manager and owner is Spencer Day who is pretty well used to publicity stunts under his former name Spencer Trethewy when he 'rescued' Aldershot in 1990.

I bet the John Terry guy starts getting weird urges to rape.

Things couldn't get much more embarrassing at that club anyway, looks like they came close to going under(again). Either way, the stunt is getting them massive viral recognition at the mo which won't do them any harm.

Bit of an epic fail there - surely Johan Cruijff should be wearing #14?

And Lineker looks to have put a bit of weight on.

I work about 2 miles form the Farnborough Town ground. I've not been able to concentrate all day for the sound of paparazzi driving past the office.

who he?

:LOL:it even says it on the picture, c'mon Chris!

plus Cruyff has a lot darker complexion to how I remember him

Sorry - force of habit. Spent quite a bit of time in the Netherlands and over there, everyone uses the Dutch spelling!

(The Dutch Championship Trophy is even called the "Johan Cruijff Schall" or "Johan Cruyff Shield" in English).

I notice a couple on here either live near farnborough or originate from there. I am looking at moving to either farnborough or fleet as my job has moved to heathrow. Initial expeditions seem that farnborough is a reasonable area and house prices although high aren't as stupid as other places in the south east. It also has a rushcliffe feel to it.

Any thoughts on areas to avoid and what it's actually like living there?

Farnboroughs pretty dull. I guess it depends what you're after. I live in between Farnborough and Fleet in Ash, so can probably give you a few pointers if you drop me a pm with what you're after?

Farnborough's first two games were postponed as the newco didn't meet the league's criteria in time to be granted membership. Great publicity stunt so far.

Going off topic a bit but I was stationed in North Camp between 2000 and 2003. Not much there. or in Aldershot. or in Farnborough.

The Air Show is good though :D
