Matz Willy Els Sels

Was worried when we bought him it was a desperation signing but hes been good enough to instill confidence back into the defensive unit.

Might be the most important transfer we ended up doing this year.

Looks like we've got our sens a PL keeper at last.

Aina made a nice defensive play in the first half and amongst the chaos, as Sels held the ball and the players started to run back up the pitch, he made sure to shout over to his teammate and give him a thumbs up.

Basic stuff, I hear you say, but other keepers who shall not be named would've been too busy wearing a rabbit-in-the headlights look to do such a thing. It was a brief moment but it tells me this guy is alright.

Just assumed we'd panic bought another dodgy keeper in the hope he'd have fewer flaws than the other two.

Whats transpired is totally the opposite. No obvious weakness so far & looks a real calming influence on those around him. He could be key in the run in.

You can see why Strasbourg were so upset at losing him. Such a solid, assured presence who deals with everything that comes his way with minimal fuss. All we really needed - especially with the relative inexperience we have in sections of our back line.

He's been excellent.
When the chairman of the club he left eulogises him like he did, you can see what he offers. The guy will be Belgiums first choice at the Euros this summer, so, its a win/win for us, as should things happen, he puts himself in the window.

I shared many folks sentiments when we signed him, based solely on that underwhelming spell he had at Newcastle.
Needn't have worried though, he's clearly in the mold of many goalkeepers before him though and has grown with age and experience, into a solid, steady presence who makes some great saves and isn't mistake prone.

Sauce salad?
Newcastle wise I think it's useful to ignore comments on keepers when they are younger (and therefore error prone - see his last game at Villa for them) and focus on what current fans think, which was glowing.

He's a good keeper - could he be more agile? Probably, but he's made some important saves for us, looks assured and kicks well. I like him. If Turner was happy to challenge from the #2 spot (he won't be), I'd be happy with those two as our GK picks next season. Bit of stability there would be nice.

He completely fitted the profile of how I would have imagined The Sun's chief football writer to be Gaz; typical cockney wide boy-type who deals almost solely in clichéd soundbites and completely nuance-free.
Absolutely Frank.

I'll say one thing about Sels, he can kick a ball better than Prick-ford.

Some of his kicking this season has been horrendous.
