Matchday 4: Charlton Athletic Fan Comments

Some of the best football atmospheres around the world are helped along with a few big drums. Give us a section of safe standing and a big drum in the redeveloped Bridgford please.

As for Charlton, more noise than most in this league although we helped by making them look like Barca in the first half. Ground looks crap with so many empty seats though. Something our players should appreciate when playing at the World Famous nowadays.

f***. Off. With. Your. Drum.
Then smash the f***er into a million pieces, eat the bits and f*** off a bit further.
Drum my f***ing arse.

I’m not a fan either, much prefer a more organic approach than the contrived drum led atmosphere. They’re probably necessary at places like Wigan but Leeds don’t use one and Elland Road has the best atmosphere in this league on its day.

Whether the drum is the trigger or not, that wall of noise was created by ppl singing/chanting and was nearly constant. Megaphones, stupid clapping sticks, vuvuzelas... they're all cheat tools, but the drum is naff all without singing to back it up.

Genuinely, I'd rather have the wfcg half empty and making that kind of noise than what we have atm.

Fair play Charlton fans.

Seen it loads of times, newly promoted teams playing on adrenaline & confidence have a decent start to the season & then fade away, Charlton burnt them sens out in the first 35 mins & didn’t do much after that although Don Goodman used a ton of wet wipes to clean the mess around his groin area every time he mentioned Charlton

Not much said about the nailed on pen & red card for the assault on Ameobi

B block.

There's plenty of opportunity to make a noise in B block without a drum. The noise carries down from A block a treat so all you have to do is join in.
The best atmospheres are organic and spontaneous, a drum is every bit as tinpot as clappers, song sheets and half and half scarves.

Stop banging the drum about the noise made by fans.

I seem to remember that Wigan (I think it was) had a drum and several of their rather sparse crowd near the away fans and they kicked up a fair noise throughout the game. Might have been the end of Guadioura's first spell; perhaps he was petrified by the racket.

You're right it was I was at that game too. I think it's the game he got taken off at half time and had a bust up with Davies.

Of course, I agree with all that. The point I was trying to make was that we were sat at the opposite end of the ground yet the amount of noise (singing noise) they may was impressive. Our equivalent, the Trent end, is pretty much silent most of the game. The bits of the ground that are loud aren't heard elsewhere in the ground with nearly the same effect. That's not through lack of effort (I'm in no way saying the parts that do sing are letting us down) accoustics will play a large part, but it is a contrast. Don't know if you went on Wednesday but it was impressive.

I didn't go on Wednesday pal but I will say that I've usually found our away support pretty disappointing in terms of noise anyway, there is the odd exception to that but unless we are mullering someone or being absolutely, give up on it all, mullered we are pretty quiet which allows the likes of Charlton to make a noise.
The positioning of the away fans needs to be carefully considered during the redevelopment because giving the LB to home fans hasn't worked.
The stewarding in A block is much more relaxed now which allows the atmosphere to build but the acoustics are shit so it doesn't carry.
A drum isn't the answer unless you want generic chants and a contrived atmosphere.
We need an area of relaxed stewarding, with good sound projection in stand where we can silence the away fans. No club sanctioned fans movement, no drums, no miserable ***** wanting to sit down or look after their kids moral upbringing for them, no over-zealous or even zealous stewards, just traditional fans who want to make a racket in one area together.
