Matchday 4: Charlton Athletic Fan Comments

Hmm arguably our two best midfielders and our best centre back this season so far on the bench.

Blimey that's a surprise, nobody could have predicted that lineup.

Very shocked by this.

Wouldn’t be changing a winning team at this point but I’m not the manager.

At least our bench looks strong for once.

Lolley not in Forest squad.

From the highlights on Quest from their game on Saturday he looked a right handful.

Probably the best team we've faced this season They'll have watched our past line up and will now be thinking WTF - Messes their system up a little I bet.

Bowyer and Gallen have done an incredible job with no money in a very, very short space of time.

Forest dirty already. At least a yellow surely.

What a start. Not sure how we haven't scored yet.

Great team goal!

What a goal, they've been under siege since the start.

What the hell is going on? This is fantastic football.

Our players barely know each other, impressive stuff.

One of these sides is playing like they're favourites for relegation... and it isn't us.

Semedo should've done better than that. Good build up play though.

Need another goal, but we really do look good.

Ben Watson must be a thousand years old. How is he still playing?

Tearing them a new one, always a worry when it's only 1-0 though.

The fourth official has indicated a minimum of 2 minutes' additional pain for Forest this half.

Comfortably dominating in every way but goals.

Don’t think I’ve seen such a dominant half in my life. Impressive.

Excellent first half, can’t believe how poor Forest have been. Having said that, they almost scored at the end, great tackle to stop them.

Nottingham* Forest have been completely outplayed for 45 mins..can't remember a better performance at the Valley.

Forest have shown one or two glimpses of class and are certainly not out of this.

Disappointing that we've not gone in at least 2 up. Forest won't come out the same in the second half and we have to be prepared to force them back straight from the off and get another early goal.

Only time Watson has made a tackle was for that booking. He’s hasn’t been in the same post cost as Cullen.

Players are out and there are two balls on the pitch. Presumably that's so Forest have got something to play with.

We're getting sucked in a bit here. Just need to go back to patiently building up again.

That was filth from the Forest player - targeted an injured player deliberately.

Should have been a red for Ameobi.

Agree foot over the ball and went in aggressively.

Forest trying to goad us.

I note Sky have put fake crowd noise on in an attempt to drown out our fans singing "you're f***ing shit" at Forest.

Forest have realised that they can't beat us at football and have decided that thuggery and cheating is the way to go.

What bollocks the commentators are talking,*penalty and red card? Field got the ball first and deflected it onto their player! Clear on the replay.

Hit the player ankle height with studs up. Clear red card.*Might've been outside the box though, I'd need another look.

Yup, Field very lucky there.

Watson is in the refs ear every 30 seconds. f*** off you ginger Palace c*nt.

Hope we don't regret those missed opportunities.

Worral looks decent as the commentators suck him off with complimentary noise.

Forest are playing it wider to take our midfield out of the game.

And the commentators jinx us with "If everything stays the same, Charlton will go top"

Undeserved equaliser.

f***ing balls.

Why make subs at a corner?

Surely Jenkinson is on the edge of a red... Constant fouling.

That keeper is a monster.

Hard to put in corners against Muric. He’s good in the air to.

Frustrating, but in a good way in that we were brilliant first half and should have had it out of sight.

Well, after the first half that's disappointing, but we were definitely huffing and puffing by the end, so I'll take that.

Unbelievable in the first half and played them off the pitch, but only managed a 1-0 lead. Couldn't sustain that level into the second and they were lucky to get back and level it up. They're fortunate to get a share of the points away from home, after being second best for most of the game. That's football.

Really should of killed that off 1st half, but what a start 8 points and we’re annoyed at not beating forest - who look awful.

Well impressed with that on our budget, one of the greatest first half’s by a Charlton team.

2 points dropped although Forest improved second half, needed to kill them off in the first half.

Imagine being disappointed with a draw at home to Forest after playing them off the park for an hour. Crazy how far we've come.

Game of two halves, we will learn from this. Appeared that we ran out of steam after about 40 minutes, must take our chances. Denied by some good goalkeeping and the defending of Dawson & Worrrall, I'm pleased Adomah didn't start, he's always been and he remains a very skilful and dangerous player.

Shame football is about goals not passing and movement.

Seemed a bit amateurish to make two subs at an opposition corner but probably just hindsight bias. Disappointed but for an hour or so we totally outclassed a decent Championship side.

We just did not get a second. Looked tired as second half went on. Lucky Forest goal but they should have had a pen.

It's a good point against a decent side, but we made them look poor tonight because we were that good at times.

I thought the draw was overall probably a fair result, and impressive that we could give Forest such a good game while resting 3 of our best players this season. We were brilliant in the first half, some superb football but it's not as if we created and missed loads of chances, as there was some excellent defending from Forest in the box and their keeper was excellent at actually keeping (and terrible at kicking!). The one bad miss was Leko's in the second half, but other than that Forest dominated after the restart as we somewhat faded, maybe we put too much effort into the first half?

Come the second half, and Forest seemed to have been given a kick up the backside. They started playing with more attacking threat, exploiting the narrow shape by relentlessly targeting the wings. Fair enough strategy and one we were coping with fairly well. But I thought their catalyst came through pushing Silva further forward, who was having an otherwise really rather indifferent game. Not that he played overly well, but it gave their attackers much more freedom, and they got a bit of a foothold in the game. Ameobi should have been sent off. No idea about the one on the edge of our area but a couple of Forest fans have said it was a very poor challenge. Overall, especially as we had slightly battened down the hatches near the end, I think a draw was fair.

Cullen and the midfield in the first half were just mesmerising. Forest always felt a threat though, so a draw was in the end not a surprise. Expect them to be up there at the end of the season. The subs they brought on were particularly strong and had an impact. Great game and atmosphere.

Forest had lot of possession in the second half but failed to open us up, save for the corner towards the end, which we allowed to bounce in or around our six yard box before Adomah lashed it in. That was really their only clear chance that I can recall and Dillon hardly had a save to make.

I hope SL has also taken note. Cheers Callum.

Just caught this before getting down to work. Thanks Calvin.

Fair enough, but as usual, opposition fans are a bit one-eyed and tend to think the other team made all the fouls and their chaps are unlucky or unfairly treated.

"Hard to put in corners against Muric. He’s good in the air to".

This made me laugh, I presume it was about him coming to head the ball several times lolz.

I also noted that Sky played crowd noises every time they sung "you're f***ing shit". Fair play to Charlton fans because they created a real atmosphere. Best home support I've heard yet.

I've no probs with his sweeper keeper play.

I assume that comment from them was before he vollyballed a punch straight up in the air(which he then caught to be fair).

Well done Calvin - you've got the job! lol.

What's up with other supporters this season? Is it the in-thing to be quite reasonable and even a bit complementary?

Or is it a plot? Are they ganging up to lull us into a false sense of security before.... I don't like it, I don't like it at all.

GET A GRIP of yourselves you bastards. We're ALWAYS the worst team you've seen and jolly proud of it!
Hey Calvin, just check you've not got your 'sensitivity filter' set too high mate, we can take it - in fact we're happier with it.

Grounds too big for them and they have a drum. Absolute state of them.

Shit club.

Best home support I've heard in fairness to them despite the fact their attendance is smaller.

Some of the best football atmospheres around the world are helped along with a few big drums. Give us a section of safe standing and a big drum in the redeveloped Bridgford please.

As for Charlton, more noise than most in this league although we helped by making them look like Barca in the first half. Ground looks crap with so many empty seats though. Something our players should appreciate when playing at the World Famous nowadays.

Three quarters of their ground is impressive. I’ve been to Charlton multiple times and have yet to see the goal line at our end. Sit down you Forest b**tards!
Their fans? Any fans who accept someone with a drum........

I think their opinions on the game overall are swayed somewhat by how much better than us they were in the first 40 minutes. But they only went 1-0 up after all that.

Thought they faded badly after that and we got much more of a grip of the game (whilst not really creating much).

Although we probably didn’t “deserve” a draw overall, we certainly weren’t bad value for one. They should’ve put us to bed in the first 25 minutes and that’s their fault. A good point for us, especially after such a poor first half.

Many many Championship matches ebb and flow with a similar pattern to the game last night.

One team is on top, creates a few chances and scores a goal. It's hard to keep up that level of intensity and so they then revert to being more compact and restricting the other team, who now gain the initiative. There are so many late equalisers/winners at this level.

I'm not a fan of the idea that a team 'deserves' a result, but if you looked at the post match stats and had to guess the result you'd say "Draw".

I wizzed through it after work. They played some good stuff first half. We got a foothold second half. Away point always welcome especially with new manager, new players and our best two creative players out.

Much rather have Charlton in the league than many others. A good London club.

The opposition rarely ever get enough credit. They're joint top scorers currently. Conceeding 1 goal isn't unexpected.

Agreed, considering what the club has been through (and still are by the sounds of it) thought the crowd were fantastic. Always thought the Charlton support was shit but very impressed. I love the ground as well..

Said this in the match day thread, their chants are the same as the ones the San Jose Earthquakes are singing, especially with the f***ing drum. Empty stadium.

How is a corner goal lucky, Bowyers fault they made changes and the teams fault they didn’t handle it correctly. The last few comments said it was towards the end, which to be far, the “towards the end” should’ve been Grabben wrapping the game up with him and Mirs interplay. Still think after the second half we could’ve won if Grabben had his shooting boots on.

Shit club.

Too early to care about the table, while they played some fantastic football, they look like they could leak some goals to decent sides. They should’ve lost against Stoke but that’s what happens in the game we like So much.

After 4 games last year the top 6 was:

Leeds
Middlesboro
Bolton
Brentford
Villa
Swansea

Norwich and Sheff Utd were both in the bottom half.

The table means very little until 10+ games. 6 games is the first landmark, and that's Current Form.

There was that instance of Grabban needing 5 touches before he got a shot in (but was well tackled instead) and an instance where Watson was running with the ball and had it nicked off him before he'd even had time to look down and notice, both of which illustrate the frustration at having older players.
I can forgive Grabban because he sometimes takes his chances, and Dawson makes up for a lack of speed with his brilliant awareness and positioning. But Watson offers little other than experience. I'd rather we tried to integrate another midfielder instead.

Reasonable assessment of the match, fair play to them.

I watched the full 90 mins on fast forward this morning and it didnt seem as bad a performance as it did in real time.

Cheers Calv.
