Brighton have taken a big step backwards this season. Could see them sinking into the mid to lower table scrap next year.

They are another side who has tried to break the big 6 monopoly and will see that there's only so far they can go.

Newcastle and Villa are seeing the same because FFP won't allow the Saudis to put what they can into Newcastle if the club losses can't afford it overall and Brighton will only be able to sell the likes of Mac Allister and also presumably in the future the likes of Ferguson and that other kid they have for big money. Southampton did that for a while and eventually the pot dried up and they couldn't sustain the challenge.

When Leicester did it, it happened at the same time as enough of the top sides not having good seasons and it was a bit of a fluke overall.

I think it's been pretty established that Spurs and City can get into the initial big group (Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea) and even then Arsenal were poor before Wenger and Chelsea used to be a lower half team in the mid 90s before Hoddle managed to get in Gullit and Hughes and then Gullit's spell as manager started them improving before Abramovich bought them. Utd have of course done nothing since Ferguson left.

No-one will break the monopoly because too much has been set against doing it.

It's not too dissimilar from in tennis where the same 5 players cleaned up pretty much all the slams (and getting to the end of them) for a while, which only ended up with them largely getting injured and not being able to compete. Plenty tried to crack the top 10 but couldn't get close but occasionally one did manage a slam semi final or something instead, but it was rare that all of Nadal, Federer, Murray and Djokovic wasn't at it enough at a slam for one to win it (and then there was Stan Wawrinka). This is what we have with Liverpool and City, who cleaned up most of the titles, Spurs and Arsenal have come close but not won anything for a while, Chelsea in 16-7 were the last team not City or Liverpool to win the PL, and only Blackburn and Leicester have won it outside Man U, City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Believe it or not it was 1962-3 the last time the top 3 did not include one of Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea (Everton 1st, Spurs 2nd, Burnley 3rd). If we exclude Spurs:

Being beaten 4 -2 still don't think we are that much worse - just bad starting team selection and stupid mistake from defence - but then last season Leeds had similar thoughts where they should have won / drawn lots more games but just did not happen

I’m not going to lose any sleep over losing to a top 4 side.

Still think we will get something against Liverpool, the crowd will actually turn up as well which will help a lot.
Agreed the stupid mistakes are the frustrating part though been the same all year would love to know how many points we have lost to unforced errors

Don't mind us losing to a good team like Villa it's just the manner of the defeat that hurts. First half was so passive and we've just been littered with mistakes all game. Can't expect to win any game of football in the PL when you notch it up like that. Felipe, Murillo, Dominguez and Danilo have all had proper stinkers of a game. Spine of the team had zero spine.

Totted them up a couple weeks ago: we'd be sixth without the big mistakes.

Not too disappointed with that, Villa are a good side

Game was lost in the first half, but second half we showed some fight and looked much better. On another day we get a draw, alas it wasn't to be

Don't want to see Niakhate at LB in a back four again though, he's just not suited there

Either start with the defence we ended with today or start Toffolo there in a back four
