Joseph Adrian Worrall (The Club Captain!)

I found the 'bag of spanners' interview - it was with Chippers. (I've linked to the section, so should start at that point in the video)

He's had a slow start to a season and got over it. He will again.

I agree. I think he is struggling to acclimatise to this new level at the moment, but I am confident he will come good. He needs someone in the back 3 to have pace to cover for him. Spence bailed him out several tines last season but Neco hasn't got that same recovery speed . Now that Moussa is out for some time we need to bring in a pacey centre back rather than trying to just work with Worrall McKenna, and Cook. The likes of Spurs and City will rip us a new one unless we acquire a rapid centre half in the next 10 days. I had hoped Mbe Soh could be that player but Coops doesn't seem to trust him as it stands.

You make a mistake in the championship most of the time you get away with it.....

You make a mistake in the Prem and you'll get punished.

He made a few mistakes yesterday but our world class keeper bailed him out. That's why Dean is here not just for Joe but for Mckenna as well.

Neither have played or proven themselves in the big league yet because neither have played in it. Mistakes will happen, the issue will be if we learn from them.

Mckenna and Joe aren't the only ones...For example Surridge tried to do a flick over the head V West ham... half the time that comes off in the championship, in the prem the players are to astute for that, they have to learn collectively and individually but that's why the players that do earn the big money

But on the flipside, there was a goal mouth scramble in our box late on. Worrall is involved in it on 4 or 5 occasions; blocking, heading and eventually clearing.
Yeah, the commentary I had said VAR were looking at a handball during that by Joe... joke decision if they'd have given that

I was completely unaware of VAR in the game. Couldn't see a screen where I was sat and obviously neither goal was referred so I was completely oblivious that VAR was even involved!

Jeez, we've conceded the same amount of goals as Spurs and Liverpool and half as many as Man U. Are we saying that Romero and Van Dijk are out of their depth already as well? Perhaps we also better send Southgate instructions to never pick Pickford or Rice again as we have made them look so ordinary with our championship level skills.

Joe will be fine.

Tbh I'm not seeing an issue on either side of the argument on here. Some fans are concerned, others have faith he'll step up, but even those concerned are saying it's something that needs to be addressed, few are suggesting we should write him off.

Facebook and Twitter is another matter tho. There are bellends on there who are stupidly suggesting that.

It'll be irrelevant in a few more games. Joe will step up.

He’s been my favourite player for a number of seasons, embodies everything good about our club. I’m also sure he will rise to the challenge of being an accomplished premier league central defender…

Let’s not forget that he’s now club captain, it’s actually a fair amount of extra responsibility and I’m sure JW will be taking every aspect of the new position very seriously… perhaps to the short term detriment of his own game?

In my view he just needs a few more weeks and plenty of support … the mistakes he’s making now are the same ones he used to make 3 or 4 seasons ago when he came back from Rangers, he stuck at it and improved … and will do so again… he just needs to get his head into the task for a bit and he’ll smash it

Is it? What extra responsibilities do football captains bear over and above anyone else in the squad?

I'm not having a go at Joe but it's not like cricket where for example they have to set the field.

Agreed. He might have one or two extra things off the field depending on how Steve Cooper manages his dressing room but by and large being captain carries no extra responsibility on the pitch. Let's not forget that Joe is no stranger to the role either as he had it for quite a few games last season while Grabban was out.

What I would say is perhaps Joe is placing too much pressure on himself. He's a local lad and obviously aware of what this season means to us as fans and the city generally. I wonder if he's taking all this on himself and hence why he's rushing into tackles and getting skinned. Perhaps he believes that as leader and as someone who represents the supporters he needs to show himself to be 'getting stuck in' and setting the tone for how we're going to battle and scrap and in doing so is overzealous and either gets done or commits a foul.

Or of course he could just be not up to the level. It does happen as much as we don't want it to be true. Let's hope that isn't the case.

Obviously differs from club to club, but there is generally a shed load of BTS responsibilities, day to day player liaison, match day schedules, PFA meetings, Referee meeting, that’s all aside from being the main communicator between head coach and team and often representing any issues players have both in a footballing and non footballing context. Add to that the obvious responsibility we see on the pitch … in the case of JW that’s big in of itself, first season back in the prem for his boyhood club…

It’s not just wearing an armband and deciding a coin toss Harvs

Big difference being an on field captain and club captain, maybe it’s an aspect of the game not talked about, but as mentioned to Harvey there is generally a fair amount involved and Id suggest the role is amplified for JW, given the context of this season and the club he plays for

I think Cooper may have to take a more pragmatic approach tactically when we play City. And that means nine behind the ball as long as can to stave off their first goal. These are not games to be idealistic in, unless he wants embarrass our defenders and possibly Hendo. What Newcastle is throwing at City today is a couple of levels up from what we will throw at them. If we want to make a game of it we have to try and frustrate De Bruyne Silva et al as long as we can, and it's no big secret how you do this. Losing 2-0 would be a moral victory, of sorts. Losing 7-0 accomplishes nothing whatsoever. Cooper has to be realistic about protecting our back line in those games.

I completely agree. The only way in matches like this is to stay in the game. If you can keep it them out for 70 minutes then anything can happen but for sure if you gift them possession in your own half and even more importantly leave spaces for them between the defence and the midfield you will get murdered. Thats why I have been making the argument for a more physical 9, particularly for games like this. We won't get the opportunity to play 3 false 9's against City, not if we want to have any chance and its just as important tactically to be able to get the ball up the pitch and hold it there to allow us to set up well defensively when it comes back...

He also has an elevated status over his peers and some of them have been playing in the top flight for years. I hope he doesn't doubt himself because of this as he deserves such a position at this club due to his heart and endeavour for all things NFFC.

Such is the level of Prem forwards these days that most defenders can struggle. Koulibaly looked like a piss head for Chelsea yesterday against Leeds' forwards and he's a £34 million, 31 year old international.

Kyle Walker was on ASM's toast all first half yesterday too.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned but to lend a bit of sympathy to Worrall he's been up against ASM who tore Walker and Stones to bits yesterday, Benrahma who is a pretty tricky player and Anthony Gordon who is also evidently a very good dribbler. He does need to step it up and cut the mistakes out, the header against Everton the other day was really bad, but he's had two teams (arguably) best players against him in ASM and Gordon, proper baptism of fire.
