I dont think Smith is protected as much as a few others.

My issue is the inference he can't live/doesnt belong at this level, when he's clearly shown during the Warburton era that he can.

This was a time period when (not immediately MW's fault, but he did have plenty of time to sort it) we were conceding goals left, right and centre.

I'm sure most people on here don't rate either Pantilimon, Kapino or Steele that much, yet Aitor Karanka seemed to think that all of them were ahead of Smith, and O'Neill played Steele when it wasn't Pants too.

We then signed Muric and Samba under Lamouchi.

So this is a string of managers who have seen him as not good enough for this level, the only appearances he has made are cup or when Samba's been injured.

Ignoring Smith's first game when he came on as sub for the cone (when we lost 5-1 to Norwich) he then conceded 19 goals (1.3 per game) and kept 3 clean sheets in 15 matches (20%).
The year after he played the first 29 and kept 6 clean sheets (20%) conceding 47 goals (1.6 per game).

So on average he concedes about 1.5 per game and keeps a clean sheet 1 in every 5 in his first spell.

But it's difficult to see how many of those goals conceded were his fault or not, even we can't agree sometimes whether a player is at fault for a goal.

It is apparent whenever he does play that we do look like conceding and most times do at least once though. Whether this is directly his fault or simply there is no mutual confidence between him and the defence is another matter.

He is potentially good enough to be a 2nd choice for us based on the fact that most seasons this has amounted to maybe 2-3 games where our first choice has been injured or suspended. I guess for those games he would do. But, as a regular starting keeper we do need and have better.

My main point is we know what Smith offers, even if we largely can't agree how useful it is. He's an above average shot stopper, who is below level at controlling his area and distribution as well as the confidence of the defence. If the international keeper we have in our squad is worse than he is, what was the point in bringing him in?

We then signed Muric and Samba under Lamouchi.

Karanka thought Hefele was better than Worrall so it's no surprise he replaced Smith with an equally mediocre keeper like Pantillimon.

Lamouchi was attempting to upgrade Pantillimon with Muric but he turned out to be a bit shit as well, which is why we moved to Samba.

the only appearances he has made are cup or when Samba's been injured.

So we're in the right position with him now, as a reasonable backup, rather than as previously mentioned "not good enough for this level."

He's only protected because people like Emmo above give him loads of shit unfairly.

Most people don't think he's a world beater but that he's a decent backup for a team without a lot of money in the Championship. "I think he's a bag of shit" is inevitably going to result in those posters speaking up.

There's plenty of other players in the squad who come with a much bigger reputation and cost who've delivered less in their here than Smith, who get away with it because they're perceived to be better because of their reputation. To pick out one (from many): Colback's come here overweight and hasn't played for a number of weeks because he was so off the pace when he played, but no one batted an eyelid.

I'm not disputing your overall point, but I think you're being a little harsh on Colback. From my observation, he was starting to get up-to-speed again after playing little, if any, football for 12-months when that nasty challenge from behind by the Swansea centre-forward damaged his right ankle ligaments, leading him to miss the best part of three months. He's obviously struggled to break into the starting-X1 since returning to fitness.

New contract until the end of next season. Seems strange. At 27 he should be looking for regular 1st team football.

Seems a bit daft. We have capable enough keepers in the 23s provided we keep Horvath and Samba as the main first team keepers.

If we assume Samba is ahead of Horvath and the present situation is temporary, there is a big gap between 2nd and 3rd choice already.

He's not really L1 standard either overall, good shot stopper but then they all are, he has little else, there's a reason why we tend to leak goals whenever he's played for us.

Yeah you've got to question the ambition of the lad. Not going to get a sniff here. Just seems happy to not play and hang around in the background.

Some keepers have always been happy on the bench though. I don't think Carlo Cudicini had much of his PL career as a first choice. A season or two at Chelsea and a bit at Spurs before they got Friedel...

Moves away can easily go wrong though, especially for goalkeepers, when there are so few first-team spots available (and backup typically get less opportunities from injuries and suspensions) - he barely got any football in that loan spell at Mansfield, so probably not many opportunities available to him, certainly not ones that would see him earn as much as he would be extending his contract here.

I'd say that's harsh tbf, he's only ever played against harder opposition in the cup or when we've been dog shit.

He's a more than capable GK imo just never been given the chance.

You'd have to think that there's a reason why we've given him an extension and you can't blame him taking one, well pay far more than a L1 club.

We’re just tying down our homegrown players for Europe next year. Yates, Smith, Worrall next….

Unlikely to get a better third choice keeper for the money we are paying Smith. Wouldn't want him as first choice and obviously nowhere near Samba and Horvath, but he's not as bad as some folk make out.

It might be the case he's second choice next year as we seek to get a fee for either Hovarth or Samba that we can reinvest in outfield positions...

„Oh no, he lacks ambition!“

You’ve got a young lad who’s perfectly happy to pick up more money than 98% of this forum each year, for being Forest‘s third-choice backup goalie?

More power to him. He’s never let the team down when needed, and if he is ever needed, that is, if Forest lost their first two goalkeepers, then you know he would step in and he won’t let the side down.

Good on him, no good on Forest for sorting this out.

I'm not sure we will have sufficient cover within the U23s next season. Both Hogarth and Shelvey are probably getting to the point where they need to experience proper competitive games every week if they're going to develop further - which means they either need to be sent out on loan or moved on entirely depending on how much potential the club see in them. If that happens, then it leaves Watkins and Bott as next in line in the U23s - as neither have played any minutes at that level yet, giving Smith an extra season (at hopefully not insane wages) creates a bit more of a buffer / safety net just in case both Samba and Horvath are out.

He's not really L1 standard either overall,

Might have had a chance to prove you wrong had he not made that save against Ipswich. Granted thats a long time ago, but given the few chances he's had since, the keeper we saw then is far better than your giving him credit for.

My recollection of him is excellent shot stopping, more than competent on crosses, just needed work on distribution.

Been at the club since about 2002 so almost definitely.

Cooper recently: I say both, but Jordan Smith plays a big part in the group as well, if you’re talking bout someone who shouldn’t go under the radar.

It's a good move. You could argue he lacks ambition but if he's happy that's fine as clubs need a third choice keeper who isn't problematic and happy to sit it out and potentially only play 2 or 2 games if they're lucky. He doesn't let us down when he plays and tbh he's always had dog shit in front of him when he's been in the side previously. He'll been absolutely fine with back 5 we currently have.

Clearly Cooper sees something in him or he wouldn't keep him.

And the guy hasn't been wrong so far.

I think Jordan Smith is a bag of shit that gets overrated because hes an academy lad however he is definitely not at fault for either goal. The first one hit the side netting and was from close range and the second one he was full stretch and that went in the corner.

Just because he was not fault dosent mean he is not shit and just because he is a bag shit dosent mean that he could do anything about the goals.

Just wow.

Before anyone judges Smith too harshly please remember that he had a centre-half pairing of Michael Mancienne and Matt Mills in front of him.

David De Get himself would have struggled with those pair protecting his goal.
