There's been some bleating on here as if Smith cost us the game. What a load of old cobblers. Some folks on here need to grow up. Yes he might nt be the best keeper, but he was one of the better players on show vs Swansea. And the defence was a shambles because the defence was a shambles. Smith can't close down wingers. That's nothing to do with him. And Figureido makes mistakes whoever is in goal.
He's easily good enough as backup to Samba.

Gabbiddon largely sang his praises throughout on the game I watched. Couple of soft ones maybe, had Samba coughed them up you wouldn't have heard a word though.

He wouldn’t have though - that’s largely the point. And he gets criticism for the rare errors he makes that aren’t anywhere near as bad as Smiths.

Almost every time Smith steps onto the pitch he lets in a sackful of goals and people perform all sorts of mental gymnastics to absolve him of even a shred of culpability. I’ve never known a goalkeeper consistently concede so many goals and it be everything from the players on his team to someone flushing the chain in the loo of the Jubilee Club that’s to blame instead.

It’s no coincidence that the club has brought in so many random goalkeepers over the last few years.

And for them to be considered an upgrade on him. He is living off one save, from the time when we had a bipolar serb and a traffic cone on the books, and got his break in the side when the traffic cone got flattened. We had a terrible record in the first half of the season and he didn't make it much better. In fact, I think we teetered closer and closer to the relegation zone under Warburton before that game - having not actually been in the relegation places at all, we came close.

The next season we continued to leak goals with Smith playing before Karanka decided to replace him, Pantilimon and Kapino came in and he dropped to 3rd choice. Then we got in Steele (I have never seen a keeper run away from a shot before like that), Smith went to Mansfield on loan and got dropped for Logan who's a lump, and then Sabri repeated it with Samba and Muric. I'm really not sure Diallo is any worse considering I haven't seen him let in a hatful of easy goals.

I'm sure he's a good lad but he's 26 now and he isn't actually going to get much better is he?

Nobody is claiming Smith is a world beater, just that he's now being scapegoated if he plays and we lose. Only the last goal could be blamed on him, and even that's harsh as many a keeper has seen the ball go between their legs, including all time greats like Peter Smeichel.
I agree with lots of what you say, specifically being dropped at Mansfield as a huge black mark against him. Falls short in the physical game, gets bullied a bit by big strikers. Plus he does seem to panic the defence, though fullbacks not doing their job and centre halves comically falling over are not his fault. And the criticism that he conceded loads under Warburton holds little water because that was a defensive system failure, plus you try keeping goals out if Mills is your defensive linchpin. And the Stoke game, are you really blaming him for that. Every player in red that day had a mare. Psychological melt down rather than keeper failure.

So I agree he’s not good enough as a starter, but until the young keepers like Shelvey are ready, and that should Gaz Braz's call, he's more than good enough as a reserve.

Thing is as the keeper is part of your defensive unit they are potentially as likely to blame for the goals being let in as the other players.

The Montanier defence was an utter disaster, I think we kept 1 clean sheet all the time he was there, but I don't think Smith played any of those, we started off with de Vries, who got injured in the first game and then went to Celtic, before it took a few matches to realise the traffic cone was only good in roadworks and then got in Vlad, and I think it was Brazil who dropped Vlad for the cone. I'm sure the players we had weren't that bad but not really suited to this division (Lam wouldn't be too bad on the continent).

As for Mills, he was a solid enough defender under Freedman and for his previous clubs.

Warburton couldn't organise a defence either but Smith was part of that all the way through and Karanka (who could) clearly thought he was a weak enough link to get 2 keepers in. A back 4 of Bong, Jenkinson, Toby and Worrall would probably not look as shaky with Samba in goal as Smith.

Pre-match Captain sinister says: Smith is a much maligned, technically very ood keeper.
Everyone piles into criticising him for the goals we conceded last season.
Last season the defence crumbled after that Derby game when Capt Worrall gifted them that chance.
Smith wasn't at fault for any goals as I recall.
His weakness is his distribution.
But catching, coming off his line, being brave, shot stopping etc he is really very competent.

Brave words indeed. May come back to haunt you I'm afraid.

In his defence, what’s in front of him tonight is frankly a f***ing shambles.

Is it?

I know McKenna has come in for Worrall, but I wouldn’t say he is a significant downgrade. Blackett at left back I’d argue is a better option than Bong.

Yates and Garner is a pairing which a lot of fans have wanted to see in the holding positions.

Smith is fine for what he is. I just hope seeing him make people realise how good Samba is, and maybe hold off trying to tear him to pieces every time he doesn’t play the perfect game.

Yates and Garner doesn’t work. Anyone could see that a couple of games ago.

Blackett has been turned inside out repeatedly, and the whole bloody side are so static, Norwich are running rings around them because nobody in a red shirt is doing any closing down or pressing.

It’s pathetic. You could put a prime Peter Shilton in goal behind this lot and he’d struggle too. There’s absolutely no protection at all.

Smith is fine when your keeper has nothing to do. Last few times he's played he's made the cone look good.

Can’t fault smith for any of the goals so far. Mad a great stop to prevent (or maybe postpone) them going 3 up.
He’s getting a poor deal from teammates and ‘supporters’ alike.

Couldn't do much with either goals, and Samba wouldn't have got near either.

He's fine for what he is, a backup keeper that plays <5 games a season. We have much, much bigger problems to fry than backup keeper.

I dont think Smith is good enough, but I also don't think he can be blamed for either goal.

Wasn't at fault for anything tonight and I actually thought he kept the score down to 2 goals very well .
It could have quite easily been 4 .
