January 2024 Transfer Window

The Athletic mention we did make an offer for De Gea over the course of January, along with Ramsdale and Kelleher. Can’t fault the ambition in that department. I wonder how far up/down Sels was on the list of keeper targets.
I think in fairness to the chap the journos annoy me a bit with that sort of stuff because in truth its not really important as he's the one with us now so actually he topped the list of players that we wanted for the price we were willing to pay and who wanted to join.

It seems like we went shopping in Harrods with Lidl money so offering the scousers £15m for a player they rightly or wrongly value at £25m for example is more for the journalists to speculate about than useful but...

Personally I would have been way more disappointed to sign Kelleher for massive money because he has never seemed to me to be any better than Matt Turner, except for playing behind a defence with Van Dijk et al in it.

De Gea is an odd one because he's not played in an age and will have had offers from everywhere so it's hard to know what the hell he actually wants. Ramsdale would be good, I think he's better than Raya (Who I think is on loan) and I bet he thinks he is as well so probably doesn't want a move.

Probably Marinakis casually dropping it in Percy's ear to preemptively quell discontent when everyone works out Sels is shite.

Good results for us today with those that are struggling along with us. However, this will only really be useful if we get three points tomorrow, or at the very least one point.
Can’t believe how well ‘little’ Luton town are doing. Certainly know how to score.

I think today was bad for us-I feel Sheffield United and Burnley are doomed anyway and more than useful
points for Everton and Luton have left us in deep trouble.
I agree that we need a result tomorrow.

I find it increasingly irritating that individuals on here keep spouting that Sels is shit. The Strasbourg fans, coach and president speak highly of him.
We need to give him our full support and then we can see how he performs, before crucifying him.
If I think someone is talking overly negative bollocks, I just look at their last 20 comments.

If it’s over 50%, I put them on Ignore.

There are opinions and then there is deep-rooted pessimism. This is especially grating when they’ve not played a single game for us.

Palace looked terrible today and might have lost their best defender to injury. They're not safe yet by a long stretch.
Everton are the key. As long as we're above them, we'll be OK (on the logic that they'll get deducted as many points as us).

Problem is, they have a proper defence.

Olise and Eze probably both would be looking to move on this summer even if Palace stay up, so you’ve gotta wonder about their desire for a relegation fight.

I've been looking at free agent potential replacements... we're scraping the barrel:

Santi Mina: positives are decent pedigree, reasonable age and not bad goals/game ratio. Downsides is he's in jail.

Lucas Joa: unplayable wildcard on his day, knows a few of the lads... ah, broken leg.

Aki Loba: one goal a season MLS shithouse.

Best striker out there is Diego Costa, though he's 87.

Anwar El Ghazi has filled in up top and could add to the squad as a wide player - he's a bit busy in court though.

So essentially, it's just Dwight Gayle then?

Have we got rid of anyone yet?
With Hwang's egress, we probably conclude this window.

The squad size is reduced, although principally through loans.

But better than being bloated.

Probably a good window if it signals a new era.

I doubt it will even be a loan. In my view we only bought him because you wanted to secure him (and not let Luton sign him), without making a fuss of it (ffp and all that), so we bought him in your stead. As I mentioned in the other thread, we bought two more CBs (and we already have four), so there will probably be no future for him here (he'll probably be playing with the U23 until the end of the season). Either this summer or the next one he'll be coming to Nottingham, and if he doesn't convince there he'll be sent on loan.

I'm a bit surprised about how unanimously praising are the comments about him; he seems to be too good for L1.
Young Abbey made his debut tonight. Lightning fast for a CB, decent reading of the game, strong as a mule (opponents who ran into him bounced back), comfortable with the ball at his feet. The game was too easy to judge him even for our level, let alone yours (the opponents had a player sent off in the fifth minute), but it was an excellent debut for a 20-year-old from League One. A player to keep an eye on.

I'd bet a whole pound he ends up with us. Glad he's done well.
