He's a smart player but I get the impression he's not that actual smarts... Perhaps he does want to come back on loan but doesn't realise that the rules don't allow him to (without the buy option) whilst we also have Henderson there?

What makes sense at this stage is probably a cheaper fee with a buy back clause for Utd in a year or two if it was needed. Though I really don't think he's close enough to their first team picture for this season so he'll either need to be loaned out or sold.

I think clubs are likewise restricted to how many they can loan to another PL side so Man U may feel that they don't want to use another slot loaning Garner somewhere in the PL whilst they have already loaned out Henderson to us too, and would be more keen to sell.
I think he's a lot closer to the first team picture than most realize, simply because Man Utd don't have many midfielders right now. If we don't get De Jong in, we're stuck with McFred as our only two CMs, and will have to shoehorn Eriksen and/or van de Beek into the midfield in that scenario. Until the numbers increase in the squad, I think we hold on to him. I think the games this weekend (Atleti on Saturday and Rayo on Sunday) will give a much clearer picture on where he stands in the squad, though, so there is a chance I'm way off in my assessment. We'll see!

The decision he has to make is when does he accept leaving Man U if he can't break into their first team, and that's a tough decision when he's been at the club since the U8s, and his life (footballing) dream is probably playing for them.

He clearly backs himself, and every pre-season has talked about wanting to show what he can do for Man U before accepting a loan out. It's just how long he will do this if it doesn't happen again this season.

He won't want to get to 23/24 without having a chance as a regular Premier League starting CM as that could see him with a career in the Championship, which he's too good for.

I hope we get him, it feels like he needs to make a longer-term decision first though, and he's absolutely right to see if a new manager wants him at Man U before making it.

Tbf very few Man U academy players make it as first team there. Even now they usually have to be exceptional like Rashford or maybe even Lingard and the absolutely amazing ones don't usually spend 2 years on loan.

Though you say he's been there since he was 8, I wonder whether he actually supports Man U or if they were the club who signed him, given that he's from Birkenhead, could easily be a Liverpool or Everton fan...

I remember an interview Rashford did I think it was and he said that when you're at the Man Utd academy the only thing you focus on is playing for the first team, its like an almost sacred progression for them as its a path so many "greats" have done be they Edwards, Best, Giggs and the class of '92 etc. Now how much of that is hyperbole and whether he was just speaking for himself of course I can't tell but it does make sense to have a more of a feeling like that at a club like that, I'd imagine Liverpool to be very similar - more so than if you were at Palace or Southampton.

Plus lets face it you've got to say the right thing publicly haven't you.

For me I'm not that fussed - good in the championship but really not sure about full on PL, so all about the price really for someone that you'd make a squad player rather than a first team regular.

We can't bring him in on loan without an obligation to buy and as he wants to play for Utd it's highly doubtful we'll see him back here. However, if he stays with Utd and doesn't feature much for them I think he could look again at his options at the January transfer window. It's at that point I think he may come back to us and on a perm.

It sounds exactly like a come and get me plea without overtly putting a transfer request in.

He wants out.

Question is, do we want him. I'm on the fence.

Of course James wants a loan move. He'd like to stay at Man Utd.

The question is do Man Utd want to keep James.

We should test that.

Does he want to stay at Man United, or does he want to stay on a lucrative Man United contract and get a loan?

I think he probably wants to stay at Utd.

He's spent more than half his life working towards that goal.

That will be hard to let go until he knows they've let go.

If they've let go, we should be the ones to shine the light on the new reality.

At 8 you would be very fickle and not have strong connections to a team. If a club gave you a chance at that age and you played for them through every age group chances are you would now be very attached to them. I think it's pretty safe to presume he is a Utd fan. Think of the teams and players they had during that time, particularly during his early years there.

I don't see it.

If he wants to stay at Utd you keep your mouth shut and get on with it. If you're not needed immediately then you go out on loan happily knowing your time will come. I know he's done that a few times but he's still young and should still be thinking like that. But publicly stating he wants to play every week and go out on loan is either a sign of weakness or a sign that all this Utd stuff isn't really the be all and end all.

Man U may well be a tragically run operation at the moment but they are still able to buy their way out of trouble and with all due respect to Garner, he's not going to play as much as he's just said he wants. He didn't say he wants a loan to a Championship team, he says, 'I'm Premier League ready" and that's what he wants. I'm not arrogant enough to say he's directing it at us because I'm sure all parties know the score, but there are other premier clubs who may have a stab.

Garner on loan makes no sense for you anymore. If he's not interested to leave ManU permanently, move on.
Completely agree Greek. In fairness to Garner he’s been completely consistent with what he’s said about his future over several seasons and whilst we are all into doing that Nostradamus shit and looking for signs of something more I’ve felt in this case he’s telling the truth. I think he only moves if he’s told he’s not required there and won’t make it. If there’s a chance he will stay and I think there is a chance

I’m sure Garner would be more than interested in a return to Forest and I’d be very happy to welcome him back but we’re a different animal now and there’s no guarantee that he’d be first on the team sheet every week.

It's a tough choice for him. He's probably had his heart set on playing for Uniteds first team since he was a young kid so to deal with the fact it probably won't happen is tough to take I'm sure.

What he also should realise is that a move away from Man Utd, to us or even on loan again somewhere is not a backward career step, in fact quite the opposite if the move is right. I'm not saying this is how Garner is but I get the impression that some players would rather have the prestige of being on the books at a big club than move and play more regular football, Chelsea for example have about 20 of these players. You could even argue Lingard has been guilty of it.

There'll be a lot of Nottingham eyes watching to see if he gets minutes today, I'd imagine.

I'd like him back on a perm, but I'm not under any illusions about how much he'd have struggled yesterday - think while Yates isn't the most technically gifted his physicality might have helped some. Garner's ball retention is good though so there's that.

The thing that stood out for me last season with Garner is he was our best player coping with an aggressive press. He never got intimidated and passed the ball through the lines tidily and accurately. It meant we were able to deal with Championship pressed and we missed that yesterday
