Harry Arter

Senior doom Monger
Bought for 5m in 2020; three-year contract; 884 min. in 20/21 (and bomb-squaded long before the season ended); loaned out to clubs in League One (where he only played for less than 500 min.) and in the National League in 21/22; hasn't played competitive football since May 2, 2022; happily receiving Premier wages ever since (for an extra year due to an automatic renewal of his contract), and will continue to receive it until June 30, 2024, when he will undoubtedly retire.

Modern football.
We are where we are now, and we were where we were then.
We had owners who were playbotys from the Middle East with no idea as to how football worked.
They left the "slowest" one to run it and he well and truly showed how incompetent he was in football business.
What we have with Arter is the legacy of that period.
It seems EM has decided the best thing financially is to let the contract run down, rather than spend the several million to terminate early.

Yes, not his fault as such but must be a bit odd.

Need to treat him like an apprentice and get him doing odd jobs around the place. Send him for a bucket of steam etc every now and then.

I know he's getting very well paid, but it must be an odd sort of life. Not being part of the gang, just going round doing not much, knowing whatever you do at the club is wasted.

Perhaps he has a thriving business on the side? He must have something to fill the time.
You can bet Forest are monitoring everything Arter does, to see if anything is in breach of any contractual terms.
Arter will be keeping his nose clean, so as not to get into a position where Forest can rip up his contract at no cost.
I agree it must be a sad existence for the man.
His life may be financially secure, but I'm rather glad I'm me, with all my insecurities, rather than him.

He played for the U23s in a friendly back in the summer didn't he?

He has had an excellent career and has a lot of knowledge to pass on to our young players- maybe we're doing what Liverpool have done with Jay Spearing and used him in that way?

He turns up everyday and trains with the reserves, adding his experience to the training sessions.

We could wish it were different, but he isn't sat at home running a small business!

I think he's working in the academy.

Hopefully cleaning the toilets.

Arter may well be just pocketing the cash these days for doing nowt but I’d imagine that something has happened that makes him physically incapable and mental unable to get round it. The fact he’s on such money is just part of the thing of a football club these days.

Keane is just a dick though - always has been, probably always will be.

I know I have taken the piss a few times, It must be a mental health issue he is dealing with, I have dealt with depression and having been diagnosed from a young age so maybe I am allowed more than those or at least understand.

The problem is the wage these players are on..I get most would move on but he's earning the average yearly wage in a week ...ask yourself would you really leave?? Forget principles you would.

If are some stating that he is involved in some sort of coaching etc good.

I am lucky that I have support from my partner that has dealt with the extreme of wealth and poor with me, my work has taken all around the world to benefit everyone to individuals because I clearly didn't care about my own safety...A true suicide squad member.

Not sure I'd want to be coached by an ex-player who spent years stealing a living.

He would sue the club for constructive dismissal, the PFA would step in and we would be hit hard reputationally

From what we can see none of this is to do with Arter. He signed a contract, he's been professional.

In terms of what he's contributed to the club on the pitch in relation to the money he's taken, has to be the worst signing in the club's history.

Some of the vitriol posted on here towards Arter is, frankly, a bit breathtaking.

Lest it be forgotten that this fella has suffered one of the most unthinkable tragedies imaginable for a parent, I’d be surprised if he hasn’t had some degree of mental health struggles since.

His ‘crime’ in our terms has merely been to sign a contract with a football club and then struggle to live up to it, but none of us have any real evidence that the bloke hasn’t tried. Whatever it is that’s caused his decline as a player is unknown publicly, but it’s clear the deal has been an unmitigated disaster. We also shouldn’t forget that, at the time, he looked on paper like a great signing and just what we needed.

What is he supposed to do though, rip up his contract and walk away from the money? Not one person who posts on this forum would do that. Negotiate a termination taking less money? Not one person here would do that either. And who is to say the club aren’t supporting him through problems that aren’t public whilst the fans rip him? I’m 100% sure that Harry Arter wishes his situation wasn’t what it is and the best we can do is leave the bloke alone to deal with things as best he can whether he’s making a contribution to the team or not, it certainly seems he’s a decent guy making a contribution to the club at the very least.

We all wish things were different but jeez, it’s not like it’s our money at this point, it’s small fry in PL wage terms, just let the bloke be.

I heard he has little side earner going, market stall selling dusters, lighter fuel and the like.

Arter was very much bought under the current owners, 3 years into their reign. There was quite a few missteps in the first few years after the acquisition. Only started to turn around, when we got Dane in.

This scenario should never be allowed to happen. Clubs should have the power to terminate a contract in circumstances such as these. Will never happen now though, too much player power. It's his lack of wanting to play regular football that gets me. Just happy to take the wage.
