Glenn Murray

There is a difference between playing a long pass to a player who has made a run in anticipation of a long pass and just aimlessly hoofing the ball up the pitch and hoping to win the second ball Allerdyce style

So it's not the fault of the hoofer but more the fault of the hoofee ?

I've no issue with Bongs ball to Murray, he's clearly better equipped to deal with those balls than the other strikers. In this case, I think there No.12 made the pass look alot more progressive than it was.

A diplomatic way of calling it a hoof.

Pretty much this.

But to cheers everyone up, if Murray scores and Forest beat Bournemouth this weekend, I will get a shirt in his honour.

Exactly. Long ball is a tactic based on punting the ball into the general area of maximum opportunity. A long pass is a pass and often a thing of beauty. The latter involves skill, which is why Beckham and Hoddle have been mentioned here.

Peter Sutcliffe. There was a player not afraid to attack the opponent's box.

A real punishing striker; they called him „The Hammer“.

Whatever you want to call them, I love long balls upfield, hoofs, punts, direct passes.

I've been calling out for that to happen in games where we were passing it around at the back, getting pressed high upfield and getting caught out by playing sideway passes in midfield.

Other teams we struggle with like Millwall have been utilising the long ball against us, we just needed a target man to do it. These long balls help relieve pressure on our defence, bypasses the congested midfield and instantly puts us on the front foot.

Love having that target man option.

I'm pleased that you've recovered from Covid Mr Cotteril

Same with Fig's free-kick that led to the penalty. Completely mis-judged two pretty basic, straight balls.

They were both aimless hoofs with the defenders made a mess of. I've no problem with an accurate hoof or a long pass when it's necessary and I love a striker who will chase things and make the defenders make mistakes.

But it does and did get tedious when the defenders do it too much. Especially Figuerido pre-Hughton, launching it f*** all near anybody half the time.

That's exactly the point.

Hitting long balls up to Grabban is a world away from hitting long balls up to Murray.

I'm sure we've all played football at some standard in our lives.

When you see a striker in your team who is more of a predator with movement who likes to play on the shoulder of defenders, he's not the one you will look to hit a long ball to.

If you see a taller striker with a better jump, with more strength, who you have confidence in taking on defenders physically, you're going to hit the ball up to him without question.

Typical.

Some fans slag their team off for not scoring enough goals.

Then when they do score 3 goals in a match. Either the goals are not the type of goals they want to have scored or the opposition wasn't difficult enough.

I blame Pep Guardiola for it all. If you don't play his type of footbal and let his type of football win then it's a sin against humanity..

Get a grip folks. Learn to love the very different ways that it is possible to win a football match. Trust me. When you do that. Life will be so much more enjoyable.

With DB though, it was a weapon. Whereas Gerrard lost his legs and got forced into that Liverpool midfield despite not being very good because of who he was.

If Michael Carrick played in that role for Liverpool that season they'd have won the league
Gerrard not very good and lost his legs....I've heard it all now Jesus

Fail to see how one slip means he wasn't very good and his legs had gone. On that basis every player in the game is f**ked

This is so so so true.

I am sick of reading about this perfect idea of football. There is a million Guardiola copycat teams and they are all shit and really boring to watch too. I view it as those that demand this perfection will never, ever be happy watching football and should actually go and watch Man City instead.

Any pundit or commentator that comments on the "right way" to play makes me cringe.

I love watching Man City but equally I love a good shithouse Burnley 1-0 win.

I remain unconvinced.

Not concerned about him missing a couple of chances yesterday, it happens, glad he got in the positions to start with.

But, he literally offers nothing else than possibly grabbing a goal if it's put to him on a plate.

Lots of posters will say that's all your strikers need to do but the game has evolved and that's not true unless you're a team which absolutely dominates the ball. Forest do not. Our striker needs to do more than finish chances, he needs to have some sort of physical attribute - either dominant in the air or fast to carry a counter, and having a player who can help build up play would be enormously useful for a side that struggles to create chances.

Don't mind him being here next year, but would be 3rd choice for me. That might mean we need to buy two new strikers if Grabban goes and Taylor wants out.

With every match his retirement in the summer looks more certain.
