George Shelvey

League of Ireland (South) is much higher standard than the Irish League (North). The Irish League is way below conference level standard. There are three or four professional sides only. I'd put the League of Ireland probably about conference level, maybe League Two for the top teams.

Ahem not the best night for George in Dundalk, 5-0 down at half time to Sligo Rovers and hooked off 🫣

It was always classic fan overreaction when people were calling for him ahead of Turner. He was pretty dire in pre-season.
It was mostly from fans who assumed he was young enough to not need registering in the 25 and couldn't understand that we couldn't actually pick him though, so it does show the level they were operating at.

It was the silliness of the "could he do worse" argument that led to Turner getting dropped to begin with.

Fact is though Shelvey is still young for a keeper he isn't too young to not need registering. And whilst we already had Turner, Vlachodimos and Hennessey who are or were until recently international first choices, plus a full international who won promotion last season in Horvath, Shelvey would not be getting registered ahead of any of those.

If we had gone into the season with Hennessey, Horvath and Shelvey as our 3 keepers we would have still had issues to play Shelvey.

He had done nothing for us and had been on loan and not set the world alight, even then we had loaned another keeper who had done well so he wouldn't be ahead of him.

It's a prime example which we see plenty of times where a player who hasn't had a chance yet or has been injured for a while gets better whilst they're not playing. At the start of the season we'd seen Hennessey play for us vs Man U and between Hendo's injury and Navas coming in and seen he is only good enough as back up but getting older and towards the end of his career so potentially worse this season. We'd also seen Horvath in the Championship and that wasn't satisfying either. So we brought in Turner and Vlachodimos and because we got Turner in first he kept the shirt. But there were aspects of his game which people weren't happy with so a Greek international who no-one had seen play before but who Benfica fans had said was shit became better than Turner. So Cooper eventually asks this himself and we see he's worse and then ultimately we go back to Turner whilst some are claiming Shelvey needed a chance. Which was academic anyway as he couldn't play for us.

Ok 1st goal might have done better, The 2nd goal OMG that is really, really terrible, 3rd goal bad postion, comes and then stops and does not close down, 4th goal defender at fault but shot was hardly a belter so better keeper would have stopped that. 5th goal bad defenders and always favours the attacker so no fault there. After that performace very glad he is not stealing a living with us.
