Our young talented goalkeeper signed a new long-term contract last season.

The 19-year-old has been with the club since the foundation phase and has shown consistent improvements from season to season and in recent campaigns he has both trained with the first-team squad and been involved in the first-team set-up on matchdays.

Shelvey was on the substitutes' bench for Forest's Emirates FA Cup tie at Chelsea last season before he made a short-term loan move to Truro City and made a number of appearances for the Southern League Premier Division South side before returning to The City Ground.

The young shot-stopper is thrilled to put pen to paper on a new deal and said: "I'm delighted to sign this new deal with the club. I have been here from such a young age and to get this contract done fills me and my family with a lot of joy.

"I'm excited to see what the future holds for me at the club that I love!"

Under 23s' head coach Andy Reid said: "We are pleased to get George's deal over the line. He's a goalkeeper with a lot of ability and potential and with lots of hard work and dedication to come from George, we believe we have a goalkeeper who can play at the top level."

Today he has joined Nigel Clough's Mansfield Town on loan where he will battle for Number 1 spot with Man Utd's Nathan Bishop who signed on loan yesterday.

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper George Shelvey has joined Mansfield Town on a season-long loan.

The 20 year-old joins The Stags seeking football league experience following a month’s loan spell at the end of last season at Wealdstone in the National League. Shelvey also enjoyed a loan stint at Truro City in the Southern League Premier Division South in the 2019-20 season.

The goalkeeper, who signed a professional contract earlier this year until 2023, has worked his way through the Forest academy system. He appeared frequently for the Under 18s and 23s and also has featured as an unused substitute for the first team.

George now joins former Forest favourite Nigel Clough for the duration of Mansfield’s 2021-22 season in League Two.

Hopefully he actually gets some game time, if the united lad is first choice it’s pretty pointless.

Yes, I was also wondering if second choice keeper in a L2 team is actually better than being third choice keeper in the Championship and getting playing time with the U23 against very talented strikers from the big clubs.

The United kid will undoubtedly have a minimum games clause in his loan contract (if he starts in at least X matches, Mansfield pay a certain amount of money, if he gets less playing time they pay much more).

Incidentally, who's third choice in your first team now?

Probably Smith, we don't have the 2nd choice yet :p

Siampanis is looking for a job (which is why I asked if having played in the UK gets you a bonus in the foreigners' point system). He did really well at Aris for a while, but they have the bizarre habit of rotating their keepers, he fell to third place, and he'll probably start as third choice next season, so he reportedly wants to go.

Is there a chance Bishop could miss games on international duty? If so, it’s not a bad move. Shelvey might get half a dozen starts.

He might still train with us sometimes too, being local.

At 22, shouldn't he be given the opportunity to play regularly at L1, if not Championship level? I know goalkeepers are traditionally late bloomers, but things have changed in football. Our second keeper is 20, and he already has 31 appearances with the first team (including 12 European matches).

If we stay up there is a good chance he will be playing against lower league teams like Morecambe, Sutton & Derby because our U21s will be in the EFL Trophy.

But yes I do agree, now would be a good time to loan him out.

Joined Dundalk.
Official site doesn’t say if it’s a Loan or permanent though. Quality as always.

Well that answers the question of how good he is - if that is the level he can get a game then he really was not the answer to our goal keeping problem, but you never know he might get better with age and games

But Emmo told us he was worth a shot and couldn't have been worse than Turner.

Oh shit he's come to my hometown. I live right beside the stadium. He will get plenty of practice and i hope for his and Dundalks sake its a good move because the club has been destroyed over the past couple of years.

Haha, of all the goalkeepers I'd happen jettison to the Emerald Isle, Young George wouldn't have been my pick.
Fair play to him though, at this stage, it's a good move for him.

Perhaps we can give Vlachodimos a run in the 23s while he learns how to save.

Not surpised tbh, supposedly had a few shockers for Stags and with all the keepers we have at the club it was always gonna be a position we looked to thin out.

And at 22 he's still bags of time to up his game, but chances are he feels opportunities will be thin on the ground here the way our club signs players. Imagine seeing Vlach come in and jump your spot in the queue 😆
