Free kick specialist.

Now we're in the Prem, surely we're gonna need a free kick specialist.

Someone who can curl/bend one 'round/over the wall.

Not sure we've got one, have we?

Any of these new chaps going to be good at super dooper free kicks?

Can’t remember the last time we had one since a certain left back, possibly P van H he scored a couple but those aside?

Kris Commons?

Trigger?

It does certainly seem a pressing need. Garner was OK at set-piecea but I wouldn't have called him a specialist.

Someone to take a decent swinging corner and 22 yard direct free kicks is a essential, imho.

Reid was pretty decent too. Earnshaw was okay. We've not had a specialist for a while though. Now Garner's gone back and Zinck's gone to Oly, I don't even know who would take a free kick. Colback? Brennan?
It's a bit of a concern at the moment, I think.

Think MGW took corners for Sheff Utd last season, they were middle of the road for set piece goals though. Agree though, we could do with someone who can put a really good delivery in; set piece goals are gonna be really important for us.

That season we got promoted, didn't he score something stupid like 14 free kicks?

SP did score something like15 goals during the season following Italia 90, with none of them coming from the spot IIRC. I can't recall how many came from free-kicks however.

Two fabulous free-kicks linger long in the memory from that season,Otis.
A thunderous effort from around 30 yards at Old Trafford in a 1-0 win.
The opener in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
Absolutely sensational!

Thing is PVH didn't have much more to his game other than set pieces whereas as Pearce & Woan did

Probably why PVH didn't really cut it in a top European league
Disagreed.

He was a natural finisher and could easily finish off 1v1 situations as well as a good header/hold up player.

I can easily suggest why he never did it in the top flight for us - that end season we went down, we were a mess, and when he came back from strike, everyone thought he was a ****, so no-one passed to him.

But he did it in the top flight in other countries, don't think he ever really got the chance in another top league, maybe because he was a **** and no-one trusted him to go more than 4 minutes without causing a fight so didn't feel he was worth spending millions of club money on.

Agree with you Statto.

Pierre scored goals wherever he went. Some might say it was only the Turkish, Portuguese and Dutch leagues, but van Nistelrooy scored goals for fun in the Dutch league too and was able to translate that to the Premier League (Pierre scored 6 goals in 21 games in a struggling side where nobody wanted to pass to him like you say)

I'm sure if he was given the chance at a top club, he'd have delivered. He had the ability but none of those clubs wanted to risk it because of his ego. So he remained at clubs where he knew he was always going to be the main man.

This might sound stupid (and I certainly haven’t done the research or particularly thought about it before posting) but do you get many free kick specialists anymore? Every team used to have a player who scored goals directly from free kicks. Have free kick goals dropped off? Have keepers got bigger, better at organising walls? Defenders got bigger in walls?

I saw a replay of the 1999 champions league final the other day. I can’t imagine a top team conceding that Bayern goal now.

Anyway I digress.

We certainly need someone who is able to ship a better corner / free kick in to dangerous areas. Ideally a left and a right footed one. As I others have said it could be worth a lot of extra points.
