Free kick specialist.

This might sound stupid (and I certainly haven’t done the research or particularly thought about it before posting) but do you get many free kick specialists anymore? Every team used to have a player who scored goals directly from free kicks. Have free kick goals dropped off? Have keepers got bigger, better at organising walls? Defenders got bigger in walls?

I saw a replay of the 1999 champions league final the other day. I can’t imagine a top team conceding that Bayern goal now.

Anyway I digress.

We certainly need someone who is able to ship a better corner / free kick in to dangerous areas. Ideally a left and a right footed one. As I others have said it could be worth a lot of extra points.
I was thinking the same tbh, you don't see many goals scored from direct freekicks

James Ward-Prowse and Alexander-Arnold would be considered set piece specialists.

Trippier is also a very good set piece taker.

De Bruyne. Bruno Fernandes. Ronaldo. Memphis Depay. Messi.

They're probably the stand outs these days.

Forgot to mention Ruben Neves. I've won a few bets on him scoring from outside the area.

Very good player who'd I love us to snap up if Wolves ever went down and we stayed up.

I'd add Eriksen to that. Still technically a free agent...

Two fabulous free-kicks linger long in the memory from that season,Otis.
A thunderous effort from around 30 yards at Old Trafford in a 1-0 win.
The opener in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
Absolutely sensational!
That one a Man Utd was brilliant I was right behind that in the away end. "Who missed in Ita"
Silence 😄
The League Cup semi against Cov at the Trent End and one away at Palace were also special.
Totally agree we really need another specialist

Was the 90's and early 2000's the direct free kick peak? You had Beckham, Del Piero, Roberto Carlos, Veron, Van Hoojidonk.

I am going to put the drop off down to the death of Adidas Predator boots with the raised fins on them.

How much longer after that was it, when they changed to those lighter balls? I think it was one of the '00s world cups, maybe 06 if not 02...

A lighter ball clearly floats and curves better, but can't usually be hit with as much venom.

So it was the Fevernova from '02 I was thinking of. Sounds like the lighter ball has changed things a fair deal.

I reckon it might have even been late 70s, through the 80s - to name a few: Zico, Maradona, Platini, Stojkovic....Metgod!
(also Pearce and Clough so probably the Forest peak too - 80s anyway, into the 90s even as then Woan would be added, although he probably didn't take many initially with those others there, and the likes of Sheringham and Black who have scored a few for other teams didn't either).

I don't know though whether the 90s would have had more players than the 80s who were great at them overall - Hagi comes to mind (although he was already around in the 80s but I don't know how many he scored in that decade). Bregy of Switzerland scored a great one in World Cup 1994, for a random example (again not sure if he was a prolific scorer of them or not)! Ronald Koeman (similar to Hagi he may have scored a decent amount already in the 80s but not sure). In the early 2000s there is also that Juninho who played for Lyon though, and Pirlo around that sort of time too probably.

I’d be interested to see the stats on free kick takers and whether it’s more sensible, in the modern game, to have someone who can put a good delivery in from a free kick over someone who shoots from them.

I saw stats for last season, it was 18 goals. Which prob makes the 13 in 20/21 a blip.

I'm surprised to see a lack of VAR effect. I'm not sure what I'd expect to see, maybe more dodgy challenges around the box than in it, for example.

And it's worth considering this against the 1000+ goals per season in the EPL.

Not strictly topic related but surprised no-one appears to be in hard on Dwight McNeil when you look at his his numbers.

Had a real dip last season which is probably why. Still a cracking player though, I’d be chuffed if we got him.
