Very long time reader first time poster so excuse cock ups. Anyone remember a England u-23 game at the City Ground I think it was against Czechoslavakia, Martin Chivers scored for England in a 1-0 win. I don't think there were tournaments for this age group back then so it was probably a friendly. The only other thing I can remember about the game was Barry Lyons was on the bench. I don't recall him getting on. Anyone else remember this?
Without any recall of the details, that does ring a bell mate. I'm not disputing what you say about Lyons being involved, but a single substitute per team hadn't long been introduced into league football though and I can't recall the situation at international level at that time.

was it vs Italy in 20 December 1967.

Well, at least that is the only game I could find where Chivers scored for England U23 at the City Ground in s 1-0 win.

England: P.Springett, Tommy Wright, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, A.Stephenson, H.Kendall, J.Sammels, P.Knowles, Brian Kidd, Martin Chivers, John Hollins.

I try not to Google things and rely on my memory but now you have mentioned that I think Lyons was named as a reserve not a sub

Yes I think that would have been the game. A certain P.Knowles of Wolves in the lineup who walked away from football stardom a couple of years later.

There are some top players in that line-up, including several who are sadly no longer with us.

One name which jumps out and who I can only assume/hope is still around is Peter Knowles, a genuinely talented inside-forward who was just approaching the height of his career (he was on the cusp of a call-up to Alf Ramsey's England team with the 1970 World Cup approaching and there was much talk of him signing for Liverpool) when he quit football virtually overnight to become an active Jehovah's Witness. I remember seeing him play for Wolves against us a few times during the '60s and he always stood out.

Edit: just spotted Colin's comment in the above post re: Peter Knowles.

I was 11 months old, so completely before my time

But Tommy Wright, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, H.Kendall (i'm assuming Howard), Jon Sammels, Brian Kidd were all present later when I had become a Football fanatic.

Yes-he was a good player and it caused quite a stir when he quit football.
Of course-he is the brother of Tottenham full-back Cyril who is sadly no longer with us.

Golden generation?n
All I'm saying is that there were some very, very good footballers in that team, Peter Knowles being one of them.

Skill and technique-wise, many would be more than a match for the current generation of England players, given today's pitches, training and development resources, conditioning and absence of the type of brutal physicality they faced every week back then.

Turner played a full 90 against Germany and conceded 3. Horvath on the bench.

Sangare also played a full game in a friendly for Ivory Coast with Boly an unused substitute.

Just had a look in the papers.

I think that the game you are refering to was the U23 game between England and Italy played at the City Ground, Wednesday, December 27th 1967. England did win 1-0 thanks to a second half goal by Chivers.

Lyons was a late choice as sub. Hindley had been picked to play but it was realised late that he was 5 months too old. That and some other late changes meant that Lyons who had recently recoverded from a niggling groin injury was called up. Having looked at a couple of reports I haven't seen a mention of Lyons being brought on so you are probably correct about him staying on the bench the whole game.

If you're interested in a match report let me know.

Disappointed that there is no commentary on these facts.

Like Boly isn't good enough for Ivory Coast yet is still a first choice CB for us. Turner conceded 3 against an out-of-form Germany, and is still playing for us. Let's replace him with Horvath, at least he didn't let any in. Sangare will be exhausted after the 90 mins, and will get overrun by the Luton midfielders (sorry I don't know their names)

You have a reputation to maintain, man.

The Americans started well, and took a deserved lead through Christian Pulisic, but Germany got back into the match, and following some excellent work, Leroy Sane had a great effort, which Turner couldn’t hang on to (in truth, he fumbled it a bit) and Ilkay Gundogan was there for a simple tap-in.

The Keeper did make a super save to keep out Nico Füllkrug just after the break, but Germany piled forward, with Füllkrug and Jamal Musiala prominent, and took the lead just before the hour, Füllkrug powering in an unstoppable shot Turner had no chance with. Likewise, with the excellent Musiala who scored the third.

Germany were up for this, they have been woeful of late, but under new Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann, there are many players who are wanting to play themselves into contention for a squad place with the Nationalelf at next years‘ European Championship and as such, they really did want it more, and by the end there was a noticeable gulf between the two teams.

Probably a 6/10 performance from the Forest goalie, I’m sure he will have wanted to do better with Germany’s first goal.

I would also add, I was only really watching this match because Stuttgart winger Chris Führich was in the German squad for the first time, and earned his first cap as a late substitute alongside Thomas Müller. Führich has been in sensational form so far this season, and the international honour was well deserved.

It’s almost funny, there’s always been a player in there but he has not always shown it - in the summer, he changed his shirt number from 22, to 27 - taking Mario Gomez‘ old number at the VfB - and he looks a totally different prospect now, faster, fitter, and capable of causing carnage in opposing defences.

Just read a report of the game and, whilst it appears to be a low bar, Turner is given man of the match and 8 out of ten for his performance.

Not seen the match, didn't even know it was on, but just shows how views can differ.

Tank was one of the best right-backs in the country at that time Nicola, so it's unfortunate that international recognition eluded him because he was born a bit too early.

If it was now, do you think that the church would have let him walk away. Don't they take 10% of wages? That would be a nice regular income for the church these days.

If anyone is interested the pre-match and post match reports can be found here for a while.

That's a really interesting question Nicola. I don't know if his profession would now compromise his beliefs (or vice versa) in terms of his committment to both?

I recall reading at the time that Knowles' conversion was pretty sudden in that after returning home from training he answered the door one afternoon to a couple of Watchtower sellers who simply engaged him in conversation, and everything accelerated from there.

Apparently just after Knowles gave up football, Bobby Tambling of Chelsea was reported to be considering retiring from football because of his Witness beliefs and his difficulty coming to terms with his violent on pitch feelings in conflict with his religious beliefs. He didn't retire though.

I didn't realise that the Williams sisters were Witnesses.
