It was meant to be a reference to the conspiracy theory that the makers of the Harry Potter films deliberately made Dobby the house elf to look like Putin, but I'm not sure I made it very clear at all

Really? I thought it was an amusing, if well-known observation, but I'm not sure it was entirely deliberate. The political allegory/references in Harry Potter rarely go beyond Britain.
