Douglas Alan „Dougie“ Freedman

Sacked by taking Bolton into the relegation places yet good enough for us? Another calamity appointment by Fawaz

His work at Palace was very admirable though.

It's questionable but I think that's only because that job isn't fresh in the mind. Rosler would have been a preferred choice and I think looking at it their CV's are almost identical.

Took clubs not looking at promotions on the verge, left before finishing the job for bigger clubs. Had a formidable immediate impact there turning their fortunes around quite dramatically and then the following season tailed off quite dramatically.

So I don't see it as a terrible appointment. It's not my first choice one but it's not my last choice either.

He's worked well without spending power and he promotes good football. Perhaps it could just work out.

With Dougie Freedman swapping Crystal Palace for Bolton this week, we have got the views of an Eagles fan, who gives his opinion on the new Wanderers boss.

Freedman stepped down from his post at Selhurst Park on Tuesday and was confirmed as the successor to Owen Coyle on Thursday morning, with a number of Palace supporters are understandably aggrieved by his decision to move to the Reebok Stadium.

Now the appointment has been confirmed, we have got the views of npn from Palace forum holmesdale.net in a special edition of Q&A.

Q: Is this a good move for Freedman and does he have enough managerial experience to get Bolton promoted?

A: Not a good move for DF and, I suspect, Bolton. He got plenty of time here due to his historic links with the club. I suspect he will never get given anywhere near that sort of leeway at Bolton, who still seem to think they are a Premier League team on their way back.

I don't think Bolton are good enough to go up at the first time of asking, and I suspect you will go backwards under DF before any progress is made. I suspect he will be gone by the end of the season.

Q: Are you sad to see Freedman leave Palace and do you think promotion could have been a possibility under him?

A: I'm sad he's left like this. I remember him as a decent player and a decent person, so the manner of departure leaves a sour taste.

I'm also sad to see him go as I was an advocate for giving him as much time as he needed. There has been too much change at this club over the past few years and I wanted to see some stability.

For me, it's way too early to think about promotion, but I'm less worried about relegation. I honestly don't believe DF is tactically good enough to make a difference either way, provided we can keep the morale of the players up.

Q: What sort of football did your team play under his management? What formations did he use?

A: On the whole, dreadful. Very defensive, even at home, up until somehow hitting on a decent formula over the last 6 weeks. I'd go as far as to say naive, bordering on inept, tactically.

Formation was, for most of his tenure, 4-2-2-1-1, with the midfield so deep, it played like 6-2-1-1. 20 games without a win would make you think it may not be working, but he flatly refused to change it.

Q: What kind of manager is he? Are players told that they are doing something wrong, or is he more friendly towards them?

A: I get the impression he's a sort of 'protective big brother' manager, taking the youngsters under his wing, without the Ferguson hair-drier stuff.

Q: What are your favourite memories of his time as a manager at Selhurst Park?

A: I'd have to say the last 8 games and, of course, the win at Old Trafford last year. The rest is better forgotten.

Cannot believe this, Freedman? You've gotta be kidding, dull as ditchwater. Can only see it getting worse. We sacked Pearce (still digesting the unbelievable news) for Dougie Freedman. Heaven help us.

And after going to bolton he lead them from doom and gloom to a late play-off push...

That is a surprise, but it is good we had someone lined up. People should give him a chance to show what he can do here.

I have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, Fawaz is one of the most stupid chairman I have ever known. He is well intentioned but bloody incompetent.

Well that was considered then? Unless of course the deal was done behind SP's back wouldn't do that would they!!!
that was sarcasm by the way.

It's all pot luck in the Championship. Jewell, Dowie, Keane, Boothroyd, Coyle and Warnock have all achieved promotion in the past but how many would want them as the next manager. Freedman might be a good fit, who knows, only time will tell. He'll get my full backing just as Pearce did.

Although a former player I wouldn't call him Forest man. At least he has some idea of what he's walking into.

I actually like Freedman. Good luck to him.

I stayed behind at Selhurst a couple of seasons ago on the last day once Forest had left and Palace did a lap of honour. Freedman applauded the Forest fans and he got the same back. I quite liked him when he was playing at Forest too, but he was there at at a bad time. There with Shipperley with no hope of keeping us in the Premier League after losing van Hooijdonk and Campbell. He scored against Derby. My favourite was the one he scored at Blackburn when we sent them down.

But I'm still sickened. When would talks with him have to have started for an announcement this early? Surely the players putting in a terrible performance on Saturday knew? I understand that is football now. But football now is also shit in many ways. A man who has served our club with a loyalty way above and beyond what can reasonably expected has been shafted a bit. And some of our fans' loyalty to him ran out after two months of his first season as permanent manager.

Wow. Apologies to the guy who just called this in the other thread. Not sure what to say about this

don't worry fella no hard feelings, but I'm guess your feeling the same as me very underwhelmed. It will be interesting to see what the contract is, as I've not heard anything on the term yet.
