Nottingham's dirty secret
There's a reason Oly want him.

He's a damn good player who needs to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Really struggling to get my head around the situation!

There's only a situation, because he looks a bad fit for the manager's seemingly preferred tactic.

As a tough, back-four shield - he is probably the best in the League. But the tactic Lamouchi seems to want is a deep-lying playermaker, with two energetic runners either side of him. Yacob has neither the passing range to do the first, or the mobility to do the second.

Is accurate, but there may be times where you'll want to play 4-2-3-1 not 4-1-4-1 and in such a scenario you'd want your deepest midfielder not to be the playmaker but someone who will just anchor the midfield.

A squad is about having options. Yacob is one of our better midfielders and it would be a waste to bomb him out because we insist on playing Ben Watson as a regista.

I don’t disagree. But would Yacob himself be happy to stick around as a ‘situational’ player? He’s too good (and possibly too highly paid) for that.

He's not really good enough to be a regular for a top 6 side IMO. Probably won't be playing regularly for Oly if he goes there either. Good squad player (certainly better than the likes of Watson anyway), but nothing more than that IMO.

I agree. I can possibly see the point in him joining Oly if it's a way of Mr Marinakis providing funds by way of a decent fee for him, with the aim of bringing in a quality younger replacement to the CG?.

Then again, it may have just been a casual conversation that we're reading too much into?

I think its way too early to judge if Yacob is the right fit for Sabri, surely he's a better player in every department than Watson, so surely as a DM / Regista he'd do a superior job? He's quality, good on the ball, engine, tough in the tackle, great positioning...

always thought Watson was totally league 1 and a complete liability - what he has going for him is he's a proper grown up with a bit of the Army sergeant major about him...probably pretty intelligent, a good motivator and organiser on the pitch and good in the dressing room, I can see that as being the only reason he's still knocking about

Agree with your assessment of Yacob, but without the forward pass, he doesn't belong in a 4141.

Thats not to say Watson does either, but he has the jump on Yacob in that respect. MON also preferred Watson to get the ball forward.

But that isn’t Watson either. You can’t pass him as a deep playmaker

Gueds would be far more suited there but Watson is much more of a carrick type player(clearly different levels)

He’s not gonna spray any balls anywhere

All I can see when I think of Watson is wayward, panicked square balls intercepted by a flying opposition winger!!
Do we know Jacob doesn't posses passing range?

Yacob, Guedioura and Watson are 32, 33 and 34 respectively at the beginning of this season. All 3 are OK but have various limitations to their games and are all in decline.

All 3 are on decent wages with a year left on their contracts.

Any respectable offer that comes in is likely to be accepted and failing that, free deadline day transfers may happen. I'd rather they be leaving asap to allow replacements to settle in though.
