how much in the summer would we have to spend if we spent 15 on deadline day to go over "the line" in the upcoming period?
All I know Thomas is that we face a potential points penalty and relegation from the Premier League as a result because someone at the club, or several people at the club, had an attitude of 'What's £15m' in the scheme of things.

I thought £15m was quoted for Akpom? So what was the point if we don't have a pot to piss in?

Billy Mk2 put a defenfder up front who wasn't the world's worst. Give it a try Nuno.

£15m in the summer, as long as we didn’t get relegated i think. Which unsurprisingly Ajax weren’t keen on.

A big decision on retaining Wood for the 24/25 season.

It’s a lot of wages for a player who is getting to the tail end of his career and will have been injured (both hamstring injuries) for around six months of his 18 months with us.

With Awoniyi also having two injury hit seasons, I feel we need someone else in to take Wood’s place.

I don't think it is a big decision, personally.

He's shown to be a fantastic goalscorer, is well liked at the club and would cost 20m minimum to replace like for like.

Give him a 1 year deal on near enough his current salary, or a 2 year deal on a bit less.

Go out and buy a third choice younger striker who can play on the wing, or at 10, too for cover and development.

The salary shouldn't be an issue as there'll be insurance in place for if he is unable to play.

I agree though that his availability is an issue though as he'll be taking up a squad place, and you need your backup to be ready but also serve a role off the bench.

I think Taiwo has something to prove by staying fit for the rest of the season too. He's not out of contract but if he can only do 20 games a season then we need someone else to build the attack around.

That’s a good point re the amount of games he’s played / if there is a reduction in wages.

Didn’t someone say he is currently on 90k a week?

Maybe they’ve just been unlucky with their injuries, or maybe we’re lucky that they haven’t occurred at the same time?

Hopefully Ribeiro is the understudy who shows promise and mitigates the risk.

I think we need to get used to the idea that 90k a week isn’t an unusually large salary for a first team premier league player. Especially a striker. It’s just if you have half a dozen sat around not doing much most of the time it becomes a problem.

He's 32 years old, with over 600 professional & international appearances on his record. That's a lot of mileage, in the position which is probably the most physically demanding in the modern game - and we've had to use him probably more than would have been physically ideal in recent weeks.
I'd say an injury was inevitable.

Does the £15-20m we spent on him count for last season's books or this season?

If it's counted as this year then he's done a decent job and contributed whether we stay up or not. Surely, that was the whole point of the loan was to delay payment until this season.

If it does count as last year then it may well go down as one of the worst signings in the club's history. £15-20m on a player for what was only an 18 month contract. Plus £7-8m on his wages (plus a potential signing on fee). He was responsible for earning us 1 point last season (equaliser against City), which we would have stayed up without it. I reckon he's got us 6 points this year (2 for the winner against Sheff Utd, 3 for the Newcastle goals, 1 for the Luton game), so if we get a 6 point deduction it basically cancels out his contribution (more than that and it will have had a negative impact). I know that's a very black and white not very nuanced way of looking at it, and he's done well this season (we would be 5 points from safety anyway without his goals) but if we go down because of a points deduction for being that much over FFP, it will be infuriating.

Yep. Get him back. He knows where the goal is. Still think he has something to offer in the Prem.
Grabban probably earned enough in his 6-months in Saudi to justify rejecting a PL-season here. Consequently, he hasn't kicked a ball in anger for at least a year, probably longer, which would ensure that it would be an almost impossible task to reach PL-level fitness.

Probably more importantly he's 36 and was not ever good enough for the PL (1 in 24 PL games)

I don’t think he was getting paid - that’s why he left.

He knows he's done at his age now, he's said in the last few days that he got a taste of coaching Davies while he was out injured had given him a taste for coaching and he's going to pursue it.

Grabban? Why don’t we bring back Earnshaw as well while we’re at it.

It’s 2024 and we’re in the PL, I thought we’d all understand the level players have to be at to score goals at this level by now but apparently not.
