A bit of both I think, we will still have a wage structure in place albeit somewhat higher than this season in the championship, if any player expects us to pay then a fortune they’ll be in for a shock.

I’m sure since Murphy came in we put a cap at 18K a week.

That cap will need to at least double, if not treble if we want to to be avoiding a relegation fight next season

40/50 is probably fair, we may have more money than we ever have but we still have the least spending power in the league.

Pope will be very expensive and, armed with PP, Burnley won't sell if they don't want to. Plenty of good keepers about. This is a blow and I have a feeling others will follow.

Burnley are massively in the sh*t financially, PP aren't going to touch the sides of what they owe.

On Samba, it is a very weird one. Sounds like they potentially lowballed him with a modest short term deal and he perhaps wants something more long term with better financial security. If he has made up his mind to go though, the aforementioned Pope would be a fine replacement.

Strongly suspect this is just posturing to get a better wage.

We bought Samba from the French second tier. He's probably going to be one of the lower earners in the squad, I'd guess around £10k, and he's played well for us for years whilst he watches absolute shite like Jenkinson, Bong and Taylor earn probably 3x as much as him whilst doing nothing.

With Dane now in place and the not-so-well-kept new wage structure, we've probably offered him c.£20k as part of the contract extension, and he's thinking that's shit considering others are on much more AND we now have PL money.

My guess is club and player will meet somewhere in the middle. That's the obvious outcome because lets face it, he's not going to get a better club now that Forest are a PL side and any sideways move might not work out, effectively prematurely ending his career, as he wouldn't get another gig when that contract expired as he'd be 32/33 and other clubs would probably conclude they wanted a younger keeper.

I am confused, how does he want the respect for his achievements to be reflected? I would imagine with more money, so it is financially motivated surely?

As others have said hopefully this is just early stage contract negotiation nonsense. Samba would be one of our biggest losses should he leave, his composure on the ball and his distribution will be vital for us next season

He’s a hero but not worried at all. Players come and players go, he’d be replaced well I’m sure.

We'd probably be looking at needing to pay an 8 figure fee to adequately replace him though, which will make a significant dent in this summers transfer budget. Definitely a situation we could do without.

Could be down to the length of contract thats been offered, maybe if we've only offered him a short extension he doesn't feel like we're committed enough. Either way it's almost always financially motivated when it comes to contracts

Bye Brice then. Not good enough to hold the club for ransom and I highly doubt he could be first choice at a team bigger than us.

If he stays he stays, if not then I can't say I'm too arsed. If hes then replaced with Pope I'm ecstatic and it becomes 'Brice who?'

Although it will be hugely disappointing if an agreement can't be reached, there's a premium for 'keepers with his particular skill-set. Is it therefore beyond the realms of possibility that he's being targeted by a higher-profile club seeking someone (even as cover) as comfortable with the ball at his feet, and distribution abilities as Samba?

Just a thought.

I hope he stays but I won’t cry if he leaves.

If any player decides they no longer want to play for this club they can go.

I also trust Dane and Cooper to replace him.

I'm loving all these posts that are basically 'whatever'

The guy is a fecking Forest legend, he did more for us against Sheff Utd the other week than anyone's favourite player has over the last 23 years.

fact is without Samba we'd not only still be a championship club, but a championship club losing five of their first eleven, and potentially having to sell Johnson and Worrall too.

I'm saying it again, he is a legend, forget your Bennett's and your Moussi's I see people love, he did mroe for us than Cohen, than Dawson, than Reid etc.

He was not only a part of the team that FINALLY got us to the premier league, a league a lot of fans have never even seen us play in, but one of the most key parts of why, both over the season but also saving our arse against Sheff Utd

The guy DESERVES to play in the prem, the guy DESERVES a good bloody contract, hell he basically earned the club 120mil. For anyone saying he doesn't deserve x or y just remember why we are where we are.

Get him signed up, long-term, and watch him become a top TOP level goal keeper with us!

I was going to post something much shorter and similar but you've put it so beautifully. Even if we did get Pope I'd be absolutely gutted to lose Sambo, let's hope it's a press negotiating tactic and something get's sorted out

I think this might be a bigger deal than some people are making it out.

Samba has probably been the best keeper we've had in a decade. To lose him even before the season starts would be a huge blow

And for those saying 'just get pope' he isn't going to be cheap. We'll probably have to spend a lot to get him.
I'll be gutted if we lose him before he even has a chance in the prem.

I reckon it'll be fine.

His agents probably demanding prem money and the club thought they could do it relatively cheaply.

Brice will be sat on holiday and his agent telling him what's been offered (maybe not just from Forest).

Personally think he deserves some reward for his achievements, I suppose the how much is the awkward bit.

Have to agree, acting so nonchalant about it and assuming we can easily replace him is naive at best, fear if he does leave it will be a case of 'don't know what you've got til it's gone' for some of our fans. Sadly it's just another example of how quick the tides can turn with football fans, the hero to zero effect

God help us if we start next season with a series of defeats, you just know theres going to be fans that will dismiss this seasons accomplishments and likely start questioning Coopers ability to adapt to the prem

What is the source of this story?

The club has stated that talks are taking place.

At every stage during negotiations there is a point where all parties don't agree.

This story is like reporting every night that the sun has disappeared, and that if it doesn't reappear we'll all die.

Ppl are printing any old rubbish as there's a massive increase in online searches for Forest atm.

I agree. We've already got a huge job on with the amount of bodies we need through the door. A top quality keeper is something we could do without having to find.

The problem is if this sets off a domino effect, which I imagine it will. For most of these players it is the biggest opportunity in ther careers to make a shit ton of money.

I expect a summer of us being held to ransom.

I agree, I think potentially it could be a double game of brinkmanship.

Forest link to Pope essentially says, if you leave we will find a replacement no problem.

Samba asking to be sold in an attempt to get a bigger salary.

For me Pope if we could do a deal where we pay £10m then he's a good player but it will cost around £50k or £60k a week wages you would imagine.

Samba is a now a bit of a club legend, if we've come up short on the offer then we hopefully will go back in with a better deal.

Genuinely and not a slight against him at all but I do wonder if he has a better chance of a decent contract with us bearing in mind the status he has within the club.

I'm not sure that there is a load of clubs that will be prepared to pay the transfer fee we would want and him the wages he wants because in my opinion his value to us is higher.

He would be a perfect back up to Allison, he should be offered decent money though. His a great keeper that a lot of people have blamed for God knows what reason.

As others have said, I hope this is really just Samba and his agent saying "I want a bit more money" rather than him genuinely wanting to leave for somewhere else.
I think it's really a bit out of character for him. He seems to genuinely love this club, so why would he suddenly say cheerio right when we've achieved promotion?
I really hope it's just agent talk.
