Brice Lauriche Samba - „Magic Hands“

I think he's a very good Champo keeper, probably a decent Premiership one. When he steps up a level next season we'll see if his game moves up. Still not certain he commands his area as well as I'd like to see, and at times his distribution is sloppy, but I think he deserves the chance next season to show he belongs at that level.

This is one of the wildest inaccurate statements I have read on this forum in a long long time.

Haha, I thought exactly the same. If occasionally hitting a 70 yard pass slightly too far counts as sloppy then I think every player in the world would be classed as sloppy

Just FYI I am a massive Samba fan, top top quality keeper imo. But yeah I do think he was at fault for the goal, but I'm also fairly confident with a weaker keeper we not only wouldn't have been 2-0 at that point, but we wouldn't even be in the playoffs

The quote surprised me too.

The defensive record is brilliant and he plays his part

Especially since his return from suspension

Normally commands his box, reads the game and great distribution.

From the off SUFC blocked him at corners

Tried to stop his quick distribution

Tuesday will see more of the same

Samba isn't bulletproof. He got caught in no mans land for that corner, like he did for one in the first half, but that is because he was wanting to come out and command his area like he did for the other 95% of the game. Sheff United looked their most threatening from set pieces and in general, I thought Samba and the team dealt with it quite well. I am not even going to comment on the distribution part, because that is just absolutely wild.

I'd like he to get more of a fist on those long throws Robinson floats in. They rely on those so much.

I wouldn't have said he was "caught" necessarily, just the players in front of him stopped him (legally or otherwise) from claiming the ball in like he would usually have.

Once you get part way committed you're then struggling as if he'd tried to challenge illegally he might have been sent off and he can't just go back to his line.

The one Surridge cleared off the line does show how you need to get defenders back and this is probably quite important when your keeper is quite proactive at coming off his line as sometimes he isn't going to make it.

About right.

And to be fair to Samba, when he has made cock ups he's usually got himself together soon afterwards for later games (although Horvath stepping in at times may have influenced that too)

Nah, soft as shit, got caught out.

That said, we're likely going to face a barrage of long throws and crosses into the box tomorrow, and it's going to be a better pressure relief having a keep coming and trying to claim every one of them than one who is glued to their line like Costel Pantillimon.

For their goal, even if he didn't get checked, he was getting nowhere near it. I think it was GBG in another thread though who pointed out neither did any of our centre halves and Worrall completely lost his man.

The only challenge Berge had was Jack Robinson. Cooper will not have been impressed.

Saturday was Samba in a nutshell. 89 minutes of confident, assured goalkeeping with hands and feet then a moment of poor judgment at the end.

Would certainly be looking to replace him if we went up and wouldn't be totally against the idea even if we don't.

Only thing is his passing out from the back is superb really. His shot stopping and general command is a bit meh for the prem league. However would we get someone with better feet? Or at least similar?

I have come to the conclusion that he's our most underrated player.

If not then definitely the most undervalued by a minority of our supporters who clearly are a terrible judge of keeper.

Samba is quality, the slating he gets its quite frankly boring now. People are too used to him and ignores the excellent all round games he has. If it were up to me he would be our main keeper for the next 5 years to come.

His passing is by far his best asset. He's by far our most comfortable ball playing keeper, probably ever. I can't say I have the same confidence in him claiming a cross or pulling off a worldie save though, like I used to with Camp and De Vries (just to name 2 fairly recent keepers of ours)

He's great. Don't think we've had a better keeper in the last 10 years or longer.

Seems like some people think we should have an Ederson level of keeper playing for us.

That's because people think he shouldnt make mistakes. Everyone does, only issue is when he does it inevitably leads to a goal.

If he never made a mistake, he'd be the greatest GK to walk the planet.

If Coops says he's in the team, he's in the team. Doesn't matter how much we pontificate about this, that or the other.

Same as Peter Taylor said it was a goal because the ref said so; didn't matter how much Thommo complained.

We all are entitled to our views but

In the Championship

* we have the second best defensive record over 46 games.
* we are in the top six teams for clean sheets.
* Samba has the second best save percentage.
* Samba is ideal for the modern sweeper keeper role.
* his distribution is very good.
* he is much calmer since his sending off.

Samba has played in 40 of the 46 league games
He has 44 clean sheets in 131 games for Forest
The downside is 15 yellows and 1 red card

Horvath did a very good job when called upon but
Cooper knows his best option.

If Samba had let in the goals Man City did against Real Madrid the other day there would be a thread on here about how we'd need to replace him if we were to get to the prem...

Did you see Bowen take the ball round him yesterday too? Not good enough for Forest

Just out of interest, how many moments of poor judgement would you say Samba has had throughout the season? I assume that he's averaging about one mistake a game in your view if it's happening once for every 90 minutes that he's played for us?

I’m more interested in hearing who we could target that would be an upgrade on Samba. It’s all very well (nit)picking holes in his performances, but I think some people have way too high standards for where we are.

Freddie Woodman would be in the mix I’d guess, given he was at Swansea with Cooper for two years and was his keeper at the u17 WC, but I’m not massively convinced he’s an upgrade on Samba to be honest. Samba’s got better handling I’m sure.

Sam Johnstone is out of contract but looks to be heading to Spurs. Pope will get a better move and the likes of Pickford (if they go down) and Henderson are financially way out of reach.

Alex McCarthy is out of contract. A great shotstopper, but why has he not established himself as Southampton number 1 while he’s been there? Not sure his kicking is as good as Samba either.

I don’t want to upgrade in shot-stopping or crosses only to lose Samba’s distribution, so any replacement should be as good or better than Samba with his feet.

I’m a big fan of buying the best keeper you can afford, but I’d probably be tempted to stick with Samba and give him his chance if we go up.
