Away Pubs near City Ground

I bet Keith will remember that pub next to Queens Park, christ it was a proper rough place late 80's.

Wes' Organ

Biggles

The amount of times a night would end like that. With some nutter, shirtless, wrestling with Police or Bouncers. It seemed to be a weekly occurrence. I wonder if it's still the same?

The funniest thing like that I saw was one night out in Chesterfield. We ended up with a bunch of Psychobillys that we'd met at a gig in a shithole pub, the Queens Park Hotel or similar. We went into town to Xanadus night club (with some Psychobillys mind) and the night ended in chaos. Last thing I saw was this guy with a massive quiff, shirtless, fighting with about five bouncers with all the normal townies/trendies just on looking and speechless

We went to Xanadus on a bus trip with a rugby team full of absolutely tapped f***ers. A couple of them persuaded my mate that he was ok to steam into the fit bird now that her f***ing massive boyfriend has gone for a piss, don't worry we've got your back. They had his back alright after the first few minutes when the place had completely gone up, it was absolute carnage.
Coppers cleared the club for it all to kick off again at the chippy until the coppers came and gave us a choice, on the bus and f*** off or you're all nicked. We got on the bus and the Chesterfield lads broke through the police lines and tried to storm the bus. One of the rugby lot was stood on the steps head butting everyone whose feet touched the steps.
We eventually got escorted out of Chesterfield with a return and you're nicked, ever!
On the way back down the M1 one of the daft ***** stuck a Rizzla on the bus drivers eyebrow and lit the f***er for a laugh, they were full blown ridiculous.

I remember the Queens Park hotel ( just on the out skirts ), and the Aquarius Club in Whittington Moor. Used to go to those places after closing time on the Fair. 1985 and '86 it was.

The Winding Wheel was the place in Chesterfield for live music back then. Still a few teddy boys / rockabillies around Chesterfield.

The Boythorpe Inn?

Going up the hill, out of town?

Used to be a punk venue. Never had a problem in there tbh.

Used to go up on a regular basis though.

Otherwise you're talking about the Queens Park Hotel but that was as quiet as a church.

I think I was there that night too.

Small world, eh?

My best mate back in those days was a Psychobilly, used to go all over the country for the gigs and club nights.

Guanabatz, Meteors, Cramps, Sting Ray's, King Kurt, plus loads I've long since forgotten.

There was quite a scene in Chesterfield those days.

Chesterfield was proper Wild West, the back end of the 80's and early 90's.

Coventry City fans made the mistake of calling at Chesterfield after beating Leeds in the FA Cup semi finals in the mid 80's.

About a dozen coaches turned up, so about 500 - 600 pissed up fans taking the mick around town in the early evening, long before the advent of mobile phones.

I used to work on the market back then, setting up and stripping down 3 stalls, so would work until 8 or 9 at night.

By the time I'd finished and ambled up to Spires which later became Xanadus there were pitched battles going off throughout the town centre, which continued into the small hours of the morning.

Coventry, then a Division 1 team had their arses handed to them on a plate that night.

Outside Spires/Xanadu the opposing fans stood on either side of the road with only 10 or so coppers trying to keep them apart and would steam into each other, have a ruck before retreating back to the pavement ready to have another go.

I'll be honest, I've never seen anything like it before or since. It went on for hours.

I think since then only Cardiff and their Soul Crew have ever had anything out of Chesterfield. That resulted with Chesterfield getting over 100 banning orders in one day, but that's another story altogether.

I'm just glad I grew up in the sophisticated confines of a city. Your bumpkin life seemsca century behind. :)

That same night Coventry came back from the semi-final they must have got more hidings in different towns. They took a beating in Sutton as well.

I remember stopping off in Chesterfield coming back from Barnsley with Forest. There was loads of fighting and eventually the whole town turned on us, women attacking us with their high heels alongside bouncers and lads. Forest were wasting everybody though and deserved it in the end.

Years later quite a lot of Forest went back down when Mansfield were playing at Saltergate and took some revenge.

Can't remember which pub it was but the gig was upstairs. I'm sure the band was The Hamsters though.

It was a bizarre atmosphere, punks, Ted's, rockers, psychobillys... the kind of place everyone drank snakebite as standard.

I've done some digging.

According to my mate Marcus, still a Spirite and purveyor of all things punk in Chesterfield the gigs were held upstairs in the White Swan up by the Crooked Spire church.

In the 80's there was an anarchists co-operative called 48 opposite where the main police station is now, who were responsible for booking many of the bands that played at that time.

Growing up I guess we we're in the minority in that we enjoyed a drink in town with mates most weekends, without ever feeling the need to beat anyone to a pulp. Still I'm sue it was all just all part of the fun when some innocent bystander got glassed or had their head caved in.

Great days.

football post

I'm still here Crewton
Years ago we used to occasionally meet up with some of the Ilson lads in what became the Globe. Question is what was it called before becoming the Globe?

I could've sworn it was near a park.

Although, we may have gone there first before the venue...

Who knows, it seems a long long time ago now

Yeah, definitely saw Long Talk Texans and Batmobile.

We used to go down to Klubfoot at the Clarendon Hotel in Hammersmith in the mid 80's for psychobilly nights. They hosted loads of gigs at that time, so I've likely seen all the bands you've mentioned at one time or another, I'm just too bloody old to remember now

I remember Klubfoot. My first ever Psychobilly gig was there. Walked in with my new haircut, reckoned I was the dogs bollocks. Guana Batz were playing I think, so I bought a pint of snakebite and black, necked it, strutted onto the dance floor and promptly got sparked out by a flailing elbow
Also lost a moccasin at a SLF gig at Rock City and had to go home with just the one shoe on, but that’s another story!
All very hardcore for a village lad from out in the sticks :p

Mrs rockabilly was tough nut Geordie, she loved being right in the centre of the slamming at the psychobilly gigs. She ended up with a broken nose and a black eye or two over the years.

We went to a rockabilly gig at the Rolls Royce club in Derby last year. Towards the end of the gig the band played a couple Psychobilly numbers, a group of rockabilly lads along with my missus started slamming, next minute security came rushing in and tried to break it up.

To be exact, The Cocked Hat was on Broxtowe Lane on the Broxtowe Estate, just down the road from Strelley.
To be exact it was on Broxtowe Lane in Aspley,I lived just over the road in Aspley.

Strelly was either a mile to the right leaving the pub or a mile to the left and going up Colby Rd, around Denton Green and up Westleigh Rd.

Somewhere like labyboy would be ok if the OP is looking for a place to take an away fan.

Emailed the lady bay as that’s where I useally go when I make the trip up and asked if ok for Norwich fans as my son and daughter are coming up this weekend and her boyfriend is a Norwich season ticket holder so five of us and one a Norwich supporter and yep ok for him to go in there. Just hope he’s not in the position to give me grief on way home .

I agree with you. Although most of family come from Broxtowe - Mam (Whitwell Close) and Dad (Fenwick Road) had their Wedding Reception there, wet my head, etc - and we've had that argument as to whether Aspley is across the road. Coctat backed on to bideford or Withern ?

I always loved the Rose in Strelly though - another pub is it Broxtowe or Strelly?

I hope for your daughters boyfriends sake Bryn isn’t in the ladyboy. He might give him a Chinese burn or something like the old days.

To be exact, it's Strelley.

Otherwise, Broxtowe, Aspley, Strelley - there's no difference to me.
