Alexander Cole Mighten

If we have stayed at the lower end of the Championship for a couple more seasons, Mighten may have flourished for us. He looked talented whenever I saw him.

Maybe that will still happen if we find ourselves playing in the Championship again next season, but, as it stands, I see his future involving several underwhelming loan spells before he's sold to someone like Rotherham.

As much as I wish him well and hope he comes good and don’t want to slag him off but remember this is what we’d have playing in the Prem if we’d not signed the players we did, who are arguably better with more top fight experience but still not performing well.

Alex is promising but he wasn't really a force in the CH last season so no chance he'd be any use in the PL yet.

As for top flight experience, let's just equate that to PL experience for now and measure it against the players we brought in.

Niakhate, Richards, Mangala, Freuler, Awoyini, Bade, Biancone, all have experience in European top flights (France, Germany, Italy) but not EPL. Lodi is not ours but has played La Liga for Atletico. Richards aside none of them have played for an English club before.

Henderson isn't ours, but was reserve at Man U and played a season on loan. Hennessey has plenty of experience but wasn't often 1st choice or not in the top division.

Williams played a handful of games for Pool before most of last season on loan at Fulham, so not much PL experience there.
MGW has a decent sum of apps for Wolves but most of them are as sub. I think he's almost started as many for us as them.
Dennis has about half a season at a Watford side who went down.
Aurier is probably the player who has the most PL experience, out of the new signings, and probably only Cook and Colback out of the players we kept, but then they are both old. Boly played for Wolves for a few years too. But that is it.

And when you start to add in those who we sold last season or who wanted to leave like Grabban or Samba, then we are running on potential.

Even our manager and coaching staff, and CEO have no PL experience.

It's no surprise watford guy and Charnley have come in really.

Shame it's not going well for the lad.

I must admit, I'm not as convinced as others that he has what it takes to succeed at an elite level judging from what I've seen of him.

I really hope he proves me wrong.

It was only going to be playing first team men's football which showed that though.

The thing is, he has all the skills, the pace, the ability but it's putting it all together tactically which some young lads can't do and why they don't make it.

Alex needs coaching perhaps with someone who can show him that or he'll end up as another Oli Burke who looked good for a bit but couldn't think themselves through the game.

The other issue is that he's quick but not really that big or strong, unlike Brennan Johnson who seems to have bulked up a bit without it affecting his pace, overall this makes a forward more threatening against bigger defenders if they have pace, trickery and strength as well. Alex is still slight enough to be knocked off the ball by bigger defenders and especially in L1 that's not really going to work.

Going to Lincoln and coping with that mentality probably made Johnson better and if Alex responds in the right way then him too. But unless we're relegated no chance he'll be around the first team this or next season.

I agree with the Mansfield idea. They have a couple of ours already and Clough would know how to coach him.

Personally I'm up for selling him.
I just can't see the potential, or the development.
He will forever beat a man and then run straight into a group of 3 players and lose the ball.
I mean I see that POV. I personally I'm always willing to give academy lads up until the ages of 23/24 to shine as so much can change in that time, but if Coops would sooner sell him I trust his judgement in Mighten's ability much more than mine.

I half agree, but I’m not sure I’ve actually seen him beat a man.

If Cooper sees something then fair enough, but it feels like he’s on a par with some of the other lads on loan right now, only at too high a level.

We are running on potential I agree. Just keeping everything crossed that it clicks and the faith is repaid as Arteta doing at Arsenal.

Back to Mighten, I hope he comes good but I have a feeling he’s going to carve out a decent league one career.

I wasn't someone who was ever his biggest fan, but I have to be honest I thought he'd be doing better than he has been. Watching the Derby games the quality in that division is shocking, usually a bit of pace is all you need, anything else is a bonus

Maybe he's feeling the pressure of expectation as he did show a few nice things for Forest, was it the Swansea game he showed some nice composure to score a late goal? But then it's easier being the young kid coming on when game is won, than the loanee people are expecting things from

Perhaps Nathan Tyson and Alex Mighten might have something in common, pace with not a lot of guile. But Nathan seemed to be able to use his pace to great effect whereas Mighten is just unable to terrorise defences to the same effect.

Two very different uses of pace though, and not really comparable.

Tyson was at his most effective running on to a ball that had beaten the defensive line and as long as his first touch had got the ball under control, he would be uncatchable. If he did get that control, he would be unwatchable.

Mighten runs, ball at feet, at the defensive line with pace. If he gets blocked he will find away around the defender, but his next point will be to run towards the box. But mostly, this diversion, will give other defenders/midfielders time to regroup and form a cul-de-sac he will get lost in.

That's my reading of their differences.

My Wednesday mate says Mighten is having a great game tonight and has even just scored. Definitely trying to take his chance as he hasn’t played in weeks.

I was at our game tonight and young Mighten did indeed play well. Tidy finish for his goal and probably should have done better earlier on in the second half when he shot over the bar.

Overall though he worked hard, made some decent runs from out wide into the channels and played his part in setting up other opportunities for his team mates.

It’s definitely not gone the way he’ll have wanted thus far, but as Darren Moore has alluded to, it’s not straightforward walking into a totally different environment and expecting to hit the ground running.

We’ve still got a minimum of 31 league and cup games left to play and I’m sure he can play a part in helping us get to where we want to be at the end of it all.

Not just for Wednesday, but also because he comes across as a genuinely decent lad.

He’s still only 20, I thought he was older as it feels like he’s been around for ages.

Hopefully he can kick on now he’s scored, I reckon next season he needs a good run at a championship club if he does well at Wednesday.

If we get back up this time around and Mighten plays his part then I’d hazard a guess that Moore will want him around for another year, which to be fair would be move that would suit all parties.

It probably depends on how much he grows this year and what league we’re in ourselves.

Hopefully he does the business for you lot and you go up and we manage to stay up then everyone’s a winner.

Glad to see he finally did something. It was beginning to look like the only experience he was getting from this loan was being an unused sub...and he's already pretty well versed in that here.
