On the ball as always Heff.

Updated the OP - as well as updating Mighten's loan status.

...and an interesting choice considering there were lower numbers still available (28-32, officially, but other loans out have had their numbers reallocated, so could have taken 24 as well)

I think there was a guy in the NFL called Crazy Otto who took 00 as his number.

When this was tried here, they wouldn't allow it. I've forgotten why.

Yes, quite a few NFL players wore 0 (although I think Otto was the only one who had 00) prior to 1973 when the league introduced a system of numbers representing certain position groups. The thinking was, with the rules in the NFL making certain players eligible to do things on certain plays and other things being against the rules (such as receive a forward pass, for example) and others not, for example, the officials could more quickly tell if a player had broken any rules by looking at his number and ensuring he was in the right number range for the action he had taken.
For whatever reason they decided that 0 wouldn't be allowed at that point.

Hicham Zerouali, who was nicknamed 'Zero' was actually allowed to wear the number Zero for Aberdeen in 2002. But, again, in football there's not really any good reason why it's not allowed, other than the rules say a player must wear a number from 1-99.

If a player was a allowed to wear 0 it should be a rule they have to start on the bench just so the commentators could call him Sub Zero!

Wow, that was a brilliant explanation, thanks.

All I know is, you have got to be pretty special to wear #20 in Detroit.
