1992 League Cup Final vs Man Utd

This was before my time (being 10), but reading the wikipedia about it I see no Pearce and Andy Marriott in goal.

Can anyone elaborate on what took place that day and that season?

Cheers

Probably the most shit and turgid Wembley game that I saw Forest play in . Pearce was injured in the Zenith Data Cup earlier against Southampton so missed this game.

Man United fans were twats.

Can’t remember much about Marriott though.

It was after Crossley was arrested in Barnsley on the Thursday night before the FAC QF at Portsmouth, then dropped the ball second minute in that game for the only goal.

Clough dropped Crossley for Marriott when he found out, and banned him from the ground for two weeks. Which wasn't immediately - Crossley was still playing the week after the Portsmouth game at the CG, I remember the Trent End cheering every time he caught the ball.

Sounness' shocking Liverpool side beat Portsmouth on penalties after a replay in the semis, and then beat Sunderland, also div 2, comfortably in the final. Definitely an opportunity lost in the FA Cup that year. Not Crossley's finest hour.

Vaguely recall that now about Crossley. I was at Portsmouth that day and remember their 6 fingered fans quite well.

I actually can't even remember being in the final or if I even watched it, The scars of the previous final still effect me to this day so I was probably out on the lash in some pub in Nottingham trying to get some young lady or summit, I would have been 17 and far more interested in Fanny than Forest.

Think Crossley had got pissed and put some windows in around Barnsley town centre, got arrested but forgot to tell BC. Then proceeded to drop the ball in the net resulting in a f**king loooong journey for absolutely nothing!
As for the Final against Manure, Psycho was injured, we didn’t play our best, and never really looked like getting anything from the game.
Oh, and the concourse at half time was absolute carnage. Man U fans had got in our end, and it went off in spectacular style.

And just to add I never ever remember games scores or scorers, I went to the Reading game this season and can't remember the result, I only ever remember a game for about month and that's it unless it was really traumatic like the fa cup final but then I only know we lost and Gazza was a twat.
I went to the FA game v Arsenal this year and know we won but don't know anything else , I am always sober before anyone says anything, Think I might have a disorder of some sort.

Portsmouth players and fans celebrating that cup victory was the title screen for Sensible Soccer.

Longm drive back from Portsmouth that was. Most angry I think I've ever been after a match as it was a massive opportunity lost.

I had a bit of a punch up with Crossley in the Black Orchard at the end of the season about it. Then a couple of years ago I got him to write 'sorry' to my Dad in his autobiography so I'm (almost) over it now.

Both the game itself, and the occasion as a Wembley day out, were equal in their awfulness as I too clearly recall.

Where's me hammer?
What got me was the arrogance of the United fans... it was as if they didnt even try to hide it and were in disbelief that Forest fans werent happy about it.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure the Crossley story made one of the Sunday papers. Which is how Clough found out and why he played a few games after the Portsmouth match. Could have dreamt all that though!

He said in his book that he was released at 5am Friday morning and went straight to the club. They travelled to Portsmouth that evening. He was worried. Told Pearce on the coach, and Pearce said it'll be in the papers go tell Clough.

He went to the front, stood behind Clough, a curtain between them, then bottled it. Went back and told Pearce he had told him.

He also says that when Clough found out through the papers, he called Crossley's house. Crossley answered it and Clough told him to put his Dad on. Then laid into his Dad for allowing him to go out get in trouble.

It was one of the worst finals you'll ever see. I went to it as well as the ZDS and we had United fans few seats from us! Brian McClair scored didn't he?

Yes, McClair scored the only goal.

Psycho was suspended, which is why Brett Williams played (poorly) at Left Back.

My mate had a go at his Dad on the journey home for taking us to a crap cup final. We couldn't see very well. We didn't miss much. It was so bad the club and it's supporters vowed never again to return to Wembley and have stayed true to their word. To this day, even suggesting we try to win a cup game causes arguments.

On a plus note, though it only delayed the inevitable, we did the double over United in the league that season including winning at Old Trafford a couple of weeks after the final. United didn't lose many that season, so played a big part in stopping them from winning the league for the first time in 25 years.

At the end of the season the two clubs would have swapped the league points for cup win if they could.

Cash is King!
And we haven’t been back to Wembley since.

Pathetic

If someone had said to me at the time, this is the last Wembley visit you will have with Forest in the next 26 years (and counting), I would have laughed at them and told them to f*** off and get real.

Little did we know what was install for us back then.

That was the year someone sold a block of tickets in the forest end, to Man U, wasn't it..

Christ that was carnage at half time and probably the worst day out I've had with forest on and off the pitch.

Yes, row behind us was the front row of the Man Utd fans. I can't remember a single thing about the game but I do remember literally dodging boots and fists from the time Utd scored until well into the 2nd half.

f***ing mental day.

We was in that block at Wembley when the United fans got battered but to be honest they was giving it the big boy and it was inevitable if they scored they had an issue.
Also at Pompey with Mrs and seven year old, we stayed the weekend in Southsea and my lad left his Forest shirt on that night and we had to leave the pub we was having a meal because the twats wanted a pop at me and the family

We had some great days but looking back we could have had a few more. We really should have got past Portsmouth that day, We didn't play well but would havd got a draw if it wasnt for Norms mistake.
