It was after Crossley was arrested in Barnsley on the Thursday night before the FAC QF at Portsmouth, then dropped the ball second minute in that game for the only goal.
Clough dropped Crossley for Marriott when he found out, and banned him from the ground for two weeks. Which wasn't immediately - Crossley was still playing the week after the Portsmouth game at the CG, I remember the Trent End cheering every time he caught the ball.
Sounness' shocking Liverpool side beat Portsmouth on penalties after a replay in the semis, and then beat Sunderland, also div 2, comfortably in the final. Definitely an opportunity lost in the FA Cup that year. Not Crossley's finest hour.
Think Crossley had got pissed and put some windows in around Barnsley town centre, got arrested but forgot to tell BC. Then proceeded to drop the ball in the net resulting in a f**king loooong journey for absolutely nothing!
As for the Final against Manure, Psycho was injured, we didn’t play our best, and never really looked like getting anything from the game.
Oh, and the concourse at half time was absolute carnage. Man U fans had got in our end, and it went off in spectacular style.
He said in his book that he was released at 5am Friday morning and went straight to the club. They travelled to Portsmouth that evening. He was worried. Told Pearce on the coach, and Pearce said it'll be in the papers go tell Clough.I could be wrong, but I'm sure the Crossley story made one of the Sunday papers. Which is how Clough found out and why he played a few games after the Portsmouth match. Could have dreamt all that though!
It was one of the worst finals you'll ever see. I went to it as well as the ZDS and we had United fans few seats from us! Brian McClair scored didn't he?
And we haven’t been back to Wembley since.
Pathetic
If someone had said to me at the time, this is the last Wembley visit you will have with Forest in the next 26 years (and counting), I would have laughed at them and told them to f*** off and get real.
Little did we know what was *install* for us back then.
Yes, row behind us was the front row of the Man Utd fans. I can't remember a single thing about the game but I do remember literally dodging boots and fists from the time Utd scored until well into the 2nd half. That was the year someone sold a block of tickets in the forest end, to Man U, wasn't it..
Christ that was carnage at half time and probably the worst day out I've had with forest on and off the pitch.
