January 2024 Transfer Window

Whether the window was any good almost entirely hinges on whether Selz is an actual upgrade on what we had.

I've not seen him play so I'll withhold judgement but I was really hoping we'd push the boat out on a keeper because it might be the difference between staying up and going down. Seemed like there was enough money for such a move given the £16m Akpom noise.
Yeah, pretty much this.

Although he needs to be a significant, Prem-capable upgrade too, because an upgrade on what we had could still be Champ level.

Like most, I'd have thought we'd have used most the money available to get a top keeper here, but maybe we did and it just didn't work out 🤷‍♂️

Redemption

One less gobshite...
In: Reyna, Ribeiro, Sels

Returns: Hwang, Laryea

Out: Mangala, Scarpa, McKenna, Santos, Horvath, Aguilera

💪Strengthend the forward dept.
👇Weakened the midfield and defence.
🤷‍♂️Possibly strengthened the GK department.

And the bid for the Liverpool keeper. Hard to think we couldn’t get better.

That's where I'm at really - suspect we tried for 'top' types before Sels but we're either priced out (Sa & Liverpool keeper) or told no by club/player (Ramsdale & Johnstone).

Hopefully Sels is decent - decent will do right now.

If Selz is better than what we have, the window was at least a decent one.

I think there will be a few more outgoings in the coming days to the summer leagues. But we did thin the squad a little.

Reyna could be a real game changer whilst he is here.

Really disappointed with the last minute pursuit of Akpom, though. If we really had 15m to throw at an attacking player there were literally 100s of better alternatives. But my assumption is we didn't really have the cash but the big man was bored and wanted to do something.

I'm also a bit annoyed that Sheffield United pulled out of the Worrall deal. Given the rumoured issues with Cooper and the potential team leaks, he's not the kind of bloke I want hanging around the club when he's disgruntled.

Joe's fine - pays to remember where he's come from and his role up until recently in his case. Might even be useful to have around if we ever switch to a back three.

Once the AFCON lads are back, I don't think we see him in a Forest shirt again. He's 6th choice CB.

Potentially he may be 7th choice, as Serge may get the nod ahead of him if we went to three.

Negative is not addressing depth in attacking options.

Also yes you can say we have weakened midfield but having Dominguez, Yates, Danilo, Sangare and Kayoute will be enough for me. I think Dominguez and Sangare could be our pivots going forward. With Yates coming on if the game is less about football and more of a scrap.

GK one is a mystery to me I haven’t a clue if that’s an upgrade.

Reyna is a quality signing though and low risk. So there is a lot to like about that.

Also we have made lots of money here. If the commission rule we can’t have the Johnson sale in last seasons books than the profit this season will be a lot and mean we should have a lot of wiggle room next summer.

Yeah, that’ll be a great deal of use in the Championship!

Or we did have the cash but didn’t really want to actually pay it. Certainly don’t think Ajax wanted to sell. Probably just the big man indulging Miltiadis. “Never mind son, we tried. There’s always August, eh?”.

I'm quite happy we brought (and still have time to) the squad number down.

Whether it's been a good enough window, we'll have to see. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

While I agree he's right down the order, my point was more that I don't think he'll be a bad influence.

Origi really needed to go.
He still might!
However, and I know I am in a minority of one, I think - if he ever gets free from injury - the guy knows how to score goals at the highest level. For me he is a good option off the bench. There is a lot of creativity in the team now and with a more attacking philosophy he may just provide some important goals late on in games.

Play Worrall every game from here on in for me, lets start getting more clean sheets.

Right, the borefest sash windows been tinned up naar entit?

Can we all stop wanking about money and start watching football??

I don’t think we we actually spending much money on Akpom until the summer - so outside this financial cycle - so the money available is probably what we spent.
For me - we have been sensible, we have a net profit from transfers, which sends the right message to the EPL and assuming Sels is an upgrade strengthened the team and squad whilst reducing the wage bill.
It would have been nice to add a couple more - but common sense has prevailed.

Stupidly put a bit of Sky Sports News on late last night after the deadline, and there were a couple of absolute Divocks giving it all the "How come Forest are still buying loads of players, what with FFP trouble etc etc". One of them started waffling on about three year financial cycles and 'rolling the dice' and all the rest of it. No-one mentioned that we'd actually sold two players at a profit this window and let another three or four who's contracts were running down go.

We literally bought a goalkeeper for about £5m and brought in a couple of loans, and that's it. Suppose we brought this reputation on ourselves, but jeez. Clueless.

Was a bit dubious about this signing so looked on the Strasbourg site to see the reaction and everyone is saying that they are sorry to see him leave and most say that he was their favourite player. We will see

We’ve bought one player, if SSN think that’s rocking the boat then that’s on them but anyone with a brain can see we’ve been cautious this window.

Serge will be in Turkey before their window closes, I’m hoping Origi finds himself somewhere in the States soon too.

Hopefully we stay up then reduce the squad by more in summer before improving the team again. As long as the new Goalie doesn’t throw the ball in his own net we should be fine.

I think we will naturally reduce the squad unless we start handing out contract extensions willy nilly.

Hennessey, Boly, Felipe, Wood, Aina, Kouyate (Aurier if he stays) all out of contract, Montiel and Tavares we can do better than surely, Origi gone even if he lasts the season.

That's ten players right there, before we even get into selling anyone.

If we can find a way to stay up this year I'm cautiously optimisitic about the make up of the squad next season. I am sad Mangala won't be part of it, but financially the deal for him was evidently too good to turn down.
