I suppose if we do still sign a quality midfielder of our own and this signing is in addition to that as an extra option, it might not be bad business. Means we can sell both LOB and Kouyate (in addition to Freuler's seemingly imminent departure) to raise funds without worrying about being too short on numbers in midfield.

If this is the only midfielder we sign though, then I'll be a bit disappointed.

I thought that was the case but having just checked it doesn't seem like Brighton had to register Colwill last season so maybe I'm wrong. I thought I'd read it somewhere though.
I've just looked through handbook.

If the player is Under 21, he's under 21 from the Squad list perspective.

Played has the deepest lying midfielder in pre season for Chelsea and in my opinion did not look ready for this level yet.
Hopefully not what we have turned to as the DM option? Strange signing this one.

Don't really understand the logic on this one unless he's absolutely brilliant and can have us safe by Christmas.
Then he can go back and let one of our lads takeover.

Financially its very prudent, we have been in the market for a CDM with apparently 35 million to splash but have now got a player that could very well fill that spot for a season for free. When we were making bids for Fofana and Sangare i was sure we'd have to sell Brennan to balance the books. Knowing us we'll buy both Fofana and Sangare to go along with this lad but i see the sense behind it.

I doubt he is "the one" we want to be out DM star. We'll be moving on O'Brien and Freuler (and perhaps Kouyate if a Saudi club comes in) so we'll need more than 1.

Supposedly had a stormer of a pre-season and is highly rated. I'm with others that I feel uncomfortable developing Chelsea talent for them, but if this is instead of Dominguez and then allows us to keep Johnson, then I'm happy as long as we sign a new CDM.

With 2 in midfield we can play:

New CDM/Mangala/Yates
Danilo/Santos

And with 3:

New CDM/Kouyate
Yates/Mangala
Danilo/Santos

Which then allows us to sell Frueler, LoB and let Kouyate go too if Saudi come in for him.

I’m genuinely not arsed about how good he is. We shouldn’t be developing the youngsters of other Premier League teams.
How about considering our priority is to stay in the league and then progress as a club first? Worry about a team who is top end of the PL and the talent we are or aren't developing later. Would you have cared if we loaned a player in the championship? Spence for example.. who came from another championship club.

Can't say I understand the logic behind this one to be honest. Too young and inexperienced to really play a big role at this level yet, and a loan means that we won't see the benefit of developing him either.

I just hope that this isn't instead of signing a proper quality midfielder.
Thought we'd signed Salah then. Was just about to question the board's thinking signing am aging player.

Apart from not being included in the 25man squad, I don't understand this.

Why would we develop another clubs player ahead of our own? Who's he going to be replacing in midfield, Yates? Danilo? Mangala?

Probably down to a bit of confusion; Wilson was in the chippy getting a kebab whilst on the phone about the Santos and Murillo deals, journalist spying on him thought Ross said Mo Salah to the person on the other end of the phone but he was actually saying "no salad" to the person behind the counter.

If signing him allows us to keep Johnson, it's a no brainer for me.

As others have said, Brighton signed Colwill from Chelsea and we all strive for us to be like Brighton with our recruitment - this is part of it.

Given Chelsea have spunked £300m or so on Enzo, Caicedo and Lavia, he's not going to be in their team any time soon. Who knows, they may sell him to us for a decent fee next summer if he does well enough for us to want to keep him.

Both Colwill and Gallagher had come through the academy and had significant experience in English football. This kid has never kicked a ball in the English game.

What we did as a Championship side has zero bearing on what we should be doing as a Premiership side. Yes loans worked for us there due to the constraints we were under by FFP.

Whether he is a world beater or not, I don’t really care, I don’t think our football club should be developing youngsters for other clubs. Especially a club like Chelsea who’s modus operandi seems to be buy any young player in world football to stop anyone else from having them.

I get what you’re saying but it’s not very pragmatic.
  • He improves our squad
  • It would definitely weaken Chelsea for a season
  • It might save us a bit of cash
  • It stops him improving other teams around us
If he leaves us a better player, then great.

EDIT - I’ve never seen him play and have no idea if he’s any good anyway. Sounds like he is though.

Forest aren't an established Premier league club at the moment, if FFP is an issue already, they need to be clever with the recruitment.

Personally have no issues with getting a player on loan who can do a job. A goal scoring midfielder too by the looks of it which will come in very handy.

Looks a talented lad but he's played very little Football above Brazil's Serie B. I'm sure Chelsea will expect him to play but I suspect he'll have to be patient.

Hopefully we're still in the market for someone a little more established in midfield, especially with the rumoured departures.
