It's a bit of a paradox: othere is only 1 goalkeeping position in the starting line-up and, being realistic, only 1 seat on the bench for the back up keeper, but 3 keepers are required by any club with ambition.
The third choice would, back in my day be playing every week in the reserves, so keeping match fit, albeit at a lower level.
Reserve team football has long since ben given the elbow, so that 3rd choice keper, essential for an ambitious club, gets virtually no football at all, unless and until first AND second choice are both unable to play.
Mind you, the extension of that paradox is, if the third choice keeper has to start because 1 and 2 are unable to play, does the ambitious club not need a 4th choice keeper as well?
Oh well, that would have to be the U23 keeper, who ought to be the rd choice becuase as U23 keeper he gets far more real game time than the current 3rd choice keeper who will be lucky if he gets even a sbniff of a start.
3rd choice keeper is footballs equivalent to the mechanics assistant who get sent to the stores for a long rest...
