Hate to say it but I agree with Otis. I absolutely love Joe as a leader, but the last couple of games last season have caused me to worry about him. I think that following the defeat at Bournemouth the pressure of being the leader and the whole weight of captaincy got to him and in both the semi-final home leg and the final he made a lot of mistakes and was shown up to be a bit of a cart horse when trying to get back after making these mistakes. He was saved on these occasions by either Garner, Spence or McKenna getting back to cover for him. This was in complete contrast to the rest of the season, where he had been in imperious form. The team were on such a roll and the belief was that they would go to the Vitality Stadium and turn Bournemouth over and go on to claim automatic promotion. When this failed to happen it seemed to affect Joe’s form and he appeared to be mentally ‘shot’ from that point on.

As a captain he has been great, but as a player he has his limitations and as we are stepping up the quality of the squad the question will be whether he can also step up and remain ever present in the team. I would like think so but, like Otis, I’m not fully convinced.

Overall I have thought Worrall has always struggled in the big games.

But he was very good in the PO Final.

I don't think that matters though, he should still be captain regardless of whether he will make the step up or not.

This was a difficult decision and I was debating between Worrall, Cook and McKenna all of which would do us proud as a club captain.

However, Worrall edged it for me because I reckon we will struggle to find a player more loyal and committed to the club.

I normally agree with most of what you post Rzar, but I think he had a bit of a stinker in final. In the first half in particular he misplaced passes and got skinned several times, one of which was a nailed on goal if the Huddersfield player hadn’t put it straight at Samba rather than to the unmarked player at the back post.

I guess my logic was that if he doesn't or can't make the step up what is the point of making him captain as he won't be on the pitch that often. For the record I think that Cooper will be loyal to him and make him captain and I hope that he goes on to be the equivalent of Psycho in this new Premier League adventure we are about to embark upon .

Had anyone suggested Cafu yet, as he is the team cheerleader?

There might be something in this!

You make an interesting observation about the impact of the Bournemouth game on him TT.

I voted Worrall and then saw 91.8% agree.

You might as well make him the next PM too.
Let us face it, Joseph Worall would do a better job as Prime Minister than any of the shitbags the Tories have put up for the job.

Not that I imagine he is a Conservative voter 😆
The lad is from Hucknall. He probably can’t even spell „Conservative“ (sorry Joseph 😂)

Can't Play Left-Back
Preferably, someone who as well as having the necessary leadership qualities, is almost certainly guaranteed of a regular starting place.

I really do hope he proves any reservations I may have as being misplaced, but I'm not fully convinced that Joe is assured of the latter.
I think he is. There's always more of an onus on him to bring the ball out because he's the best of the back 3 with the ball at his feet, so inevitably will give the ball away from time to time, and while Spence was great for us often left Worrall exposed. I think if fully fit he starts either as the right centre back or in the middle. I love McKenna but I do fear him getting caught out by VAR.

On the one hand I've been lauding the clubs ruthless approach to this season-jettisoning Grabban, Lolley etc is/were big calls because they will have been big presences in the dressing room. On the other hand I think Joe has earned the club captain role. He did it when Grabbs was injured and it would look strange to take it from him now and my guess is it wouldn't go down well with the lads either.
I guess we will see how things go in the prem for him-for me its not so much his lack of pace I worry about (although that is an issue) its his increasing desire to go into contact with attackers, often off his feet. I've always felt the top defenders only do that as a last resort-(Des being the best example) and good players will target that-if I were playing against him I'd sit tight on him and ask for the ball either into feet or around the back but on the floor because I would be confident of either skinning him or him clearing me out and getting a foul...

Niakhite and O’Brien were both their previous clubs’ captains and this Vrankcx lad we’ve been linked with has captained Belgium u21s too.

It will be Worrall I suspect. Not sure why people are saying McKenna. He was excellent last year but he doesn’t strike me as a leader. I read somewhere that he is quite quiet and introverted too. Yates is also above him in the pecking order from last year and I suspect Cook too.

Does it really make any difference? I've always thought the fascination with who is captain is a very British thing, probably based on how our football used to be years ago with Adams, Pearce, Robson etc all chest-thumping, taking no prisoners, generally shouting at other people and looking mean. But in the modern game does the captaincy actually matter? They certainly aren't as bothered elsewhere in Europe, I think in Italy they just give it to the most senior player.

I'd like to think that all of the players on the pitch have it in them to dish out a bollocking if required or encourage where necessary. Some are better than others at it I'm sure but in reality the captain just tosses the coin and does the occasional extra interview don't they?

it makes a difference for me because it’s just another way to lump blame at someone if they picked the “wrong” captain.

It matters.

...and no many of the players don't have what it takes to "dish out bollockings"-despite the money and the glitz, fundamentally football hasn't changed that much in terms of the people on the pitch-they may be better trained, have better nutrition and drive Ferraris but most are still young working class lads many of whom want to be led.

But if say Johnson was made captain, it wouldn't suddenly stop Worrall/Cook/Colback etc from talking to other players and 'leading' anyway. That's what I mean when I say it doesn't necessarily matter which player has the actual arm band on. Grabban was officially captain when playing last season but we all knew Worrall was 'the real skipper'...
