Does anyone remember League 1 Derby County? (STILL the worst team in history!)

Champagne all round at HMRC, then?

It is of course possible that - for example - we read the Stadium went for £24m or so, it may well be that the actual club (or more accurately, the limited company behind it) was sold for a nominal £1, and then the balance of the mooted £65m has gone to pay historic debt?
I have no idea exactly how these things work, or what exactly everything means, it would need someone with more understanding of these things to break it down into a simple 'Janet and John' version I can understand.

However, I can look at Companies House and looking up Gellaw Newco 202 Ltd and seeing that on 17 June, when Clowes apparently bought the Stadium, there was a shares transfer of some £60m and that ownership transferred to Clowes Development.

There may be another transaction (I can't be bothered to look because I don't have time) in respect of one of the other companies but what I can see is that somewhere, somehow, at least £60m has exchanged hands in respect of what we know as Derby County, which suggests that most of, if not all of the debt has, or will be settled.

Erm... Is this like the time an Irish paper was running a story on Lukaku and used a picture of Stormzy instead??!

Pretty poor form by that media outlet

To be fair, Lukaku and Stormzy look like twins.

McGoldrick and McGugan look f*** all like each other!

Great research matey - The true debt figure to 'others' not including Morris was about that mark as well.

Certainly puts Derby into a more saleable position and I imagine that the game plan will be to find a wealthy investor whom will invest in the squad once the embargo has ended and allow the club to grow.

I have seen the crowing about their squad, but I can't help but think we went through that for a good few years and by luck as well as a decent manager have succeeded. I would hate for it to end and for us go back down that deep dark road again.

Got to be honest if their new owner really paid off all the debt, or close to it, then Derby fans need to build that guy a statue and give him the key to the city! I doubt he'll have the same PR media machine behind him that Rooney had, but that's one hell of a purchase based off a love of the club rather than any realistic chance of being a good investment.

As much as I'd have enjoyed seeing them start the season on minus points or going bust, I more just wanted them to be reasonably punished and debts actually repaid. If he's done that then as a football fan myself I have to say good for him, and I just hope the Derby fans remember that during the inevitable bad times!

Yeah if he paid off all the debt then fair play to the bloke. Just sorting out Morris’ problems.

But I still don’t think they’ve been punished enough as a club. A club in that financial mess goes down 9 times out of 10 anyway. They should have had a points deduction this season as well.

Where are the f***ing accounts for the last however many years for a start? Makes me laugh how they think the EFL have been really hard on them, when in reality they’ve let them get away with murder.

In other leagues they impose mandatory two league relegations, really strict embargoes etc. the EFL are piss weak

I don't think there is any point (pun intended) in seeking further punishment - Even though they may well deserve it because they will now hide behind 'You can't punish the new owners for the sins of the old that they have tried to put right.'

Let them get on with it and if they really are wanking themselves silly over the signing of a bunch of ageing journeymen on an extended pension scheme then good luck to them.

Honestly, I'm not sure where I stand on that one. I also think that, with the cheating, the dragging it out, the bragging etc. that they probably deserve more punishment

I also think if this were Forest I wouldn't be happy if a new owner and new set of players were punished for something someone no longer associated with the club did a few years ago

I'm torn, because I want the fans who were eating it up and playing the victim and loving Mel to get worse, but the fans who warned against Mel and were never happy with him deserve to get their club back on track

So I guess going from 1 game from premier league to league one with a complete rebuild is a happy medium

Either way I thought Derby would be back in the premier league long before us, if you'd told me the two clubs would find themselves in the positions they are two or three years ago I wouldn't have believed you lol

If it’s true they’ve cleared the debts, then I think Clowes deserves credit. And indeed for reluctantly stepping in to stop them going pop.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes out of the yet to be released accounts, but at some point a line has to be drawn under Morris and Quantuma.

It’s disingenuous to judge all Derby fans by the kind of cretins you see on social media, just as it would be Forest fans too let’s face it.

I think the fairest option would be for them to publish the still missing accounts. If there is evidence of further wrongdoing in them, which they haven't been punished for, then punish them now.
If there is no wrongdoing, then we all move on.

Fair?

True; most of the ones you meet in person are even worse!

Agree with this. My main axe to grind was the HMRC and local businesses being shafted, but if Clowes has cleared those debts then I actually have a lot of respect for the bloke.

Hopefully it is true, so that everyone (including the decent folk amongst Derby's support) can move on from the Mel Morris era.

As I said before, fair play to him. A lot of wealthy people hoarde their wealth. If it was Forest and I had that much money I didn't care about never seeing again, I would do it as well.

Yes I've never got this hoarding wealth thing. After all how many millions do you need? Didn't Stelios the founder of easyJet give a load of his money away some years ago?

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ex-wife, McKenzie, has already given away hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars that she received from her divorce settlement. And apparently she wants to give pretty much all of it away, too.

Oh yeah 100%! If more comes out then more must be done, otherwise every owner will break all the rules and just sell up before they're found out lol

So, let me get this right… Clowes has spent North of £60 million to pay off all the debts from his reputed £252 million fortune?
If this is correct, then hats off to him….but his company’s end of year accounts will look a bit thin.
This is before he restarts the clubs finances, which will cost him a lot more.
He could run out of money at this rate!!

I was thinking about this earlier and the other thing that needs to be considered, is that his £252m isn't static, so his ability to support Derby ongoing will depend upon how much wedge he's bringing home each month...

So, in the interest of research, I had a look at his company accounts:-
1657204205119.png
Now an operating profit of £23.3m (and baring in mind he won't take all of that himself) per annum, isn't much compared to Derby's ability to wrack up annual debt - so he'll soon be eating a chunk into his £252m.
