Evangelos Marinakis Megathread!

Anyone else think the trumpeting big spends this summer was the stupidest most neive thing?.
Every quoted fee seems through the roof, contract negotiations get sticky (Brice) because everyone starts to think everyone else is getting something they are not…
Doesn’t strike me as the mark of an Uber businessman

where and when did he say something like this?

“Now is the time to give Steve all the ammunition he needs, to be able to not only survive but bring some good results,”

“We have to invest more. Everybody talks about the television rights and money that comes in, but it is not enough for clubs in the first year. That’s why we must not be the poorer relatives of the Premier League. We need to buy some good players and some that will make the difference and have the experience who know the division.”

is that anywhere close to what you mention?

There are numbers being bandied about on Twitter that suggest Maranakis has sanctioned a spend of £75m - £100m.

Of course, the £100m is now being used as fact. And by the time you've read this post, inflation will have it at £110 give or take a few million here or there.

Being public about your ambitions at least has the benefit of helping attract capable, ambitious players.

So someone should blame for the "problem" those that write these down and not someone who didn't say them in the very few times he spoke.

Not to mention that judging his business capabilities by things not said actually, it's rather awkward at the least.

He has done so many business deals, successfully, and if someone doesn't account that, then he should at least consider that he has done negotiations with top class managers under his Olympiakos' owner hat.

It also means the clubs that those players are playing for be aware that you have money to spend...and set their asking prices accordingly.

It is a free market. They can ask for whatever they want. Getting those are a completely different story. Market has rules. Especially football market. If they can find these elsewhere then fair enough

Whether he said it in interviews doesn't matter, really. Whether he said it all hardly matters either these days.

At the end of the day, the numbers are ascribed to him and they concur with the general statement of intent.

Newspapers, Twitter, Forum. Should we value any of this information from these sources? No.

Will they enter the discourse? Of course.

You're not incorrect. But negotiations are always harder when you've shown some of your cards.

I agree with you on this mate.

I am not saying this couldn't be a problem. I am just objecting the stupidness of the person. He is far from that.

And I think that this idea of throwing away will be gone away as fast as it was created, after the first couple of negotiations and deals.

I am talking from experience which of course needs to be proven in the near future.

I don't think what EM has said matters a massive amount really. It wont be a shock to anyone in football that a team who have been promoted into the Premier League with five of the best starting XI on loan will need to spend some serious cash just to compete.

All this talk of money and silverware, I hope it doesn't put undue pressure on Dane and Cooper. Some realism needs to be exercised now.

I imagine the trophy talk was EM Marinakis getting carried away in the moment. I do believe that long term he wants us winning stuff, if he’s expecting it next year he’s lost the plot.

For anyone involved in these negotiations, the money available and what each item is worth or costs, be it player or whatever, is well known to the whole cast.

These people have been through it and know whjat is what.

To suggest that they will ask ridiculous fees and our guys will pay or be flummoxed, is just plain nonsense.

Get real, these people are experts in their field, not chaps farting about on a forum.

Yet another double post. And I only achieved that after several minutes of pressing buttons etc in a desperate attempt to get just one post.

No he doesn't. He is pretty much aware that this is a process and a project. Don't push the panic button :)

I wish I was as shit at business as EM

The bloke shits money, he's probably dropped more down the side of his settee than Chris Kirchner has in Crypto

I'm happy to sit back while EM, Cooper & Dane get us ready for next season

I'd be disappointed if the long term aim wasn't trophies

The big lad himself said, after the Playoff Final, „Trophies are coming“.

Well, I tell you what Evangelos old mate, if you’re correct, they won’t be the only thing coming.

I did raise an eyebrow at the suggestion of silverware

But bring it on!

I hope this doesn't get in the way of the process.

I'd rather go down with Dane and Coops and go again than gamble on another manager keeping us up for short-termism.

Whilst EM has been fantastic in keeping the club afloat and professionalism, his appointments for positions in player recruitment and management have been less so before Dane and Coops.

EM will know he has got the sweetspot in staff behind the scenes. He talked at length in interviews he did about giving Dane & Cooper whatever they want.

When is EM never not supportive of a backroom staff, the only issues he has had is putting his trust in the place of the wrong people. Now that is not up for question with our setup. He will know this.
