Incident Involving Billy Sharp

Otis Redding

Try A Little Tenderness
Otis I’m probably an older codger than you. We just cannot do nothing.

If the 1947 in your name indicates your year of birth then you have two years on me Hawkeye. I'll still leave it to you to attempt to prevent some coked-up nobheads invading the pitch.

This is going to be controversial but the only solution I can see is that clubs have points deducted. I know that it is extreme but the rest of us fans would make sure idiots near us in the ground do not go on the pitch. This would only happen the once.
No not having that. It's personal responsibility, if you're stupid enough to go on the pitch when you shouldn't then get banned, 5 years for first offence.

If CCTV etc managed to identify the idiot that headbutted Billy Sharp then surely it should be able to identify most of the fans that invaded the pitch?

That being the case why can we not issue fines and / or bans to these people as a deterrent?

The point I made somewhere on here. It's easy to do it, ban them.

The idiot who butted Billy Sharp apparently turned himself in to the plod, according to Nottinghamshire Constabulary.

Problem is, when you got hundreds and hundreds streaming onto the pitch, who do you identify them individually, unless they’re very distinctive or someone grasses them up?

I didn't know he'd turned himself in. Makes my point redundant if true.

Photo them as they go through the turnstiles and you can put a face to a ticket. CCTV covers the pitch invasion and then the person gets an immediate banning order in their inbox whilst on their way home.

The Chinese (a great bunch of lads) are doing something similar to run their country so we could probably get a decent discount on the system itself.

I’ve been struggling to form an opinion about pitch invasions. It’s obviously against the rules and it’s worrying for players/coach safety. But then I enjoy the drama and emotion that is shown by the fans. That video with Steve Cook singing Que Sera sera or Djeds mom singing his sons chants on the shoulders of a forest fan or even Figs screaming like a f***ing maniac! I love all these scenes.

If you ban everyone who was on the pitch it’ll be easier to get tickets next season, half the stadium was on it
I said somewhere on here that you just make an example of a few, that's all. The message that you'll be banned if you go on the pitch would soon become clear. Without fencing, which obviously we don't want, I can't see an alternative.

There has to be strong action or nothing will change, and incidents like we've seen recently will continue until the governing bodies take Draconian measures which none of us will like.

Sorry I'm probably misreading your post, but the fences in 1989 could only be opened from the pitch side of the fence, and so if we went back there they would stop people invading the pitch?

But given what happened that would literally never happen, nor should it, so it's a moot point.
No, you're not misreading anything. But I know people don't like to talk about Hillsborough on here too much, so wasn't trying to derail this into a discussion about it.

So one of the issues there was that the fences could be opened but only from the pitch side, But no-one did, because they didn't believe the trouble the fans were in (with the crush, not behaviour). And with that you wouldn't have been able to save many lives anyway, the distance between the gates wouldn't help those being crushed furthest from the gates, but would alleviate where the gates were, albeit slowly. You'd need to really be able to hold open the whole bottom 2 metres of the fence to alleviate a crush condition.

What I was partially referring to is fences which could in principle be opened from either side, which weren't in use then, but at least the Liverpool fans would have been able to get out themselves rather than climbing the fences or being lifted into the upper tier, but that would be too open to abuse if you really wanted to fence fans back in again.

There were also 2-3 other occurrences of crushing at cup semis in that end, one not involving Liverpool fans at all, so it was clearly a bad design. And it's not going to be enough justification, Liverpool fans won't want it, nor will most of football.

Depending on how good the coverage of the stands is in terms of cctv, you could - unless there's way too many like the other night - probably trace pitch invaders back from the point they entered the pitch all the way to their seat. You could then look back along the booking records for that seat, at least you'd then get who paid for it, which is better than nothing. If it's a multiple booking for a party threatening the whole party with being banned would get them to come clean presumably. Not perfect but in most cases it'd probably work.

Totally get that but some twat nearly seriously injured a player, and that's just one incident. That overrides everything for me.

Even the thought of fences makes my blood run cold. The day they return ( I can't see it tbh) is the day I stop going to watch football..

For a lot of them, the CCTV footage the club has could be used to track their exact route from the seat to the pitch.

It's the only viable solution to pitch invasions, but it's the one no-one wants and the least likely to happen after the events of April 1989

Rockabilly

GAFF LAD. "Open your knees and feel the breeze"
The only answer I can come up with is to put temporary fencing up just for 'one off' games such as play offs etc.

Other than an electrified fence like the farmers use I can't see any other way.

Or oppositely, how about the opposing team get the f*** off the pitch as fast as they can

They will ban fans before fences. I'm certain of it.

I'm going to stop posting on this thread after this so I don't become a bore, but yet again lets hear some sensible, practical, deliverable ways you stop 30,000 people getting on the pitch rather than the harrumphing

You can't stop it without doing things no one would support, like a fence or shooting fans in site with a rifle. Now, whilst this would undoubtedly probably make an improvement to the average quality of individual in society , it is possibly a step too far.

One thing I think could work would be to have a security/ police escort for all opposition players (at least) to get them off the pitch as soon as the whistle goes. If you are assigned to a specific player, you need to run and get them off the pitch ASAP.

Wouldn't have worked on Monday, the whole pitch was swamped with scruddies fans within about 30 seconds, you could see them waiting for the whistle.

No chance for any players to get off really.

But when the incident with Billy happened he was just standing on the side idly watching? This incident or the McBurnie incident wouldn’t have happened if they prioritized getting inside.

Cooper was in before them?

You are Ken Bates (Chelsea) and I claim my fiver ;)

Like Lampard said, when it’s a peaceful celebration there isn’t any harm in it, adds to the big occasion. I always think back to the scenes when John Radford scored for Hereford in the 1970’s, it’s a memorable moment that gets played on TV every year and the pitch invasion is part of it.
But unfortunately there’s nearly always a few idiots that spoil it for everyone else.

Did anything negative happened when we pitched invaded after surviving a few years back?

The players responsibility to run off the pitch incase they're attacked? Sorry that's BS.
