I agree, showed what he's all about today but its taken time to get consistency of all round performance from the player.

Grown into the shirt, Id be happy to see him next season.

Legitimate claims for MOM today.

Happily, there does now seem to be a few inches of space in his shirt

He was never as bad as the internet insisted he was. Going forward he's delivered crosses as well as Knockaert, and better than anybody else.

He did look a little out of shape early on though.

I certainly don’t think he’s “top class”, and it’s a great worry if it takes 4-5 months of playing like an absolute drain to play yourself into form. rather like Luke Freeman I find it completely inexcusable that a professional athlete paid more than 1M a year could be anything other than in good physical condition-none of them should have a body fat percentages much more than 10%. In his job the only reason why he would be fat is if he’s lazy and ill disciplined.

I really hope he goes back because if we can’t find better than him next season we are in trouble.

I don't think he's obviously out of shape or really has been at any point this season.

He played 30 games for Fulham last season so hasn't had a massive break without playing and he seems to move about fine.

You can see that how he can get himself up the field to overlap the winger (all ours are left footed aren't they) so he can cross it in plenty of times.

It seems to be more his tactical awareness than physical issues which is probably why he won't ever make it at a higher level, often gets caught out of position or loses his man or some other mistake leading to a goal.

His crossing is also a bit hit and miss but that's difficult to judge when there's no-one in the box really, that and he seems to try silly shots when it's not the best option for the team which loses the attack.

He has certainly improved recently, probably since everyone has with the new midfielders, and we were never really going to get a replacement as good as Cash.

Obviously without looking at test results we can't know where he is with his fitness and condition, but he doesn't look like an athlete and when you have the turning circle of a battleship and a tendency to be caught on your heels by an attacker, as well as poor positioning you need to maximise your physical attributes to compensate as much as possible. Remember this is his job, he's not playing for Basford. I think the most telling thing with Christie is that other teams had watched the tapes and marked him out as a defensive weak link and were targeting him e.g. against Blackburn. You would have to fancy your chances 1:1 against him as a reasonably quick attacker.
On the positive side, yes he's got better over recent games (but Jesus that was from a low bar) and I think he's actually a very good crossers of the ball but this does not balance the fact that fundamentally he is defensively very, very poor. Hughton obviously has to carry the can and he'll know if he thinks he can do better with the money we have available but I really hope we can because he's horrible to watch.

Would rather we give the young uns a go rather than blowing a massive part of our wage budget on an average player who is at the top of their game now, so that 3 year contract is only going to see him in decline.

Completely agree. Remember Cash and where that “gamble” got us

Generally think he’s done as well as can be expected in the side he’s in with the tactical briefing he’s been given.

Also must be noted that ‘ewts likes to leave Knockaert high to try and pin back the attacking full back, so if that gambit doesn’t pay off Christie will be exposed on his side.

Firstly, knockers has only been here for a portion of the season and sone of Christie’s worst displays were when knockers wasn’t in the side.

Secondly what on Earth sort of tactical brief tells you to stand on the wrong shoulder of a player that’s quicker than you, just so you give the impression of marking when in reality any ball through gas you beaten?, or to mysteriously move into a bad position as if on a string creating a gap you could run an attacking coach and horses through?.

Maybe I’m old fashioned but this guy really irks me because he is so shit at defending. There’s Figs making blocks and tackles and at least being in the fight defensively yet we want to sieve the guy and this bloke looks like a drunk whose woken up on a football pitch when it comes to defending and we’re supposed to say it’s someone else’s fault?. Jesus.

That’s not a description of Christie from Saturday’s game. The opposite in fact

To be fair, Otis, we lost every one of the 5 competitive games in that first month.

Quite true Cortez, and we were seemingly a team devoid of any belief during that period, despite the inclusion of a number of new recruits, Christie being of course one.

Just my opinion, but I thought he looked one of our better performers during that first month. I won't deny however that his form did somewhat drop-off later, although not to the degree for which he's been pilloried by some.

I sort of feel he got slightly better as the season went on, with the occasional duff performance. I won't be fussed if he returns to Fulham next season, but he was good enough for where we are at this season. I think Hughton can probably replace more economically.

I guess we can go round and round in circles with some saying he’s shit and the others he’s ok (although I’m sorry I really don’t know what games you’ve been watching-and whilst I’ll accept he’s had a few reasonable ones recently overall he’s been lamentable).
Let’s just hope you are right Cortez and that his period with us comes quietly an end and he disappears off back to Fulham with the minimum of fuss.

And I don’t know what games you’ve been watching. You sound like someone who took a dislike to a player early on and have been biased against him ever since. The idea that he’s been lamentable is ridiculous hyperbole.

He’s been an ever present, and has had his ups and downs like the others, but he’s been pretty consistent since September. He was player of the week in one of the early matches. He’s been one of our best performers by the stats. I’d believe the stats every time above the obviously biased opinions of some fans.

"lamentable" :LOL: Come off it.

You can't be hovvering top six in goals conceded with a useless Right back.

Also bare in mind he has been the only ever present in that back 4 as well.

The defence this season has conceded less goals than last season.

We've apparently done it with duff left backs and liability of a centre half. Mind you, in most of those games we were playing a 6-3-1 formation, sometimes 7-2-1.
He's improved to average, but does average deserve a big fat wage?

We all have different perceptions of whats being played, mines a 4231, when Cafu plays he also assumes enough attacking positions to call it a 4141. Ultimately the problems are in the execution, with transition being so slow sometimes folk tend to think we're trying to hold the game up.

I think this defensive bias is a red herring, the intents there with the manager, he just needs some better players.

It doesn’t bother me that you see it differently-that’s life. Your views are perfectly valid as are mine, luckily were not the ones making decisions at this club!
