This time last year when we got Carvalho and Goncalves, we were all scouring Benfica's B team for players to sign and this lad was mentioned simply because he was a left-back.

For those on twitter, Alex Goncalves (no known relation to Diogo) was asked, as he is someone who reports on all things Portugese football, and likes discussing players from Benfica down to lesser known player, and he stated Ribeiro wouldn't be available, as he had a very successful spell on loan at Rio Ave the season prior and Benfica have chosen to have him in their full squad for the season.

So seems like he was highly thought of by them. He ended up playing 9 games for them, all in cup comps. So obviously didn't make the strides hoped, but then Alex Grimaldo isn't the easiest player to beat out of his spot...

Status wise, it seems like we'll be taking 2 players who were closer to Benfica's first team than both Carvalho and Goncalves were at the time. Just have to hope it translates to success on the pitch.

But it's nice that we've indetified two positions we desperately needed to add to, in a style we needed them, and seem to have found two players with the style for the role. (Sememdo with his athleticism and rangey play and Ribeiro possessing good speed and being one of them left-back thingys)

I won't be convinced Riberio is as good as Semedo with his althleticism and rangey play until I see a video of Riberio booting someone in the face and falling over his own legs first. :banana:

I know that's said in jest, but sadly some probably will base their judgement on him from that clip where he has come off the bench for 12 mins and had a nightmare. Whereas there's another vid covering his play over a season or so showing a completely different side to him.

Key for me is not to get caught up in videos too much, but just try and see what their movement is like, their agility, pace, footwork... etc cos that's what needs to translate. It's like strikers scoring 40 goals in the non-league. Means little, but if you can see if their opening their body before the ball is played to them, if they take it on their back foot so they turn in one motion and if they strike a ball cleanly and firmly.

Semedo has that Guy Moussi about him. Where he looks like he needs nurturing a bit, but he can also power his way past 3/4 people, put people on their arses and then move the ball to a teammate. Also like Moussi, he looks like he can probably kill someone and conspire to get nowhere near the ball too. Both of them have legs that move faster than their brain can probably manage sometimes. But there is 100% something there that could become brilliant.

Ribeiro's clip didn't show much to me personally about his game. Except he seems to be quite quick, happy to play interchanging football, and always seems to be moving for the ball.

Like you say, on the flipside some people base their positive judgements on a 3 min set of highlights which show only a players best moments, not the other 80 odd minutes he's playing shite, so it's a double edged sword. Kasami, Soudani, Dias etc. there's plenty of highlight-reel wonderstars who ended up absolute flops here. Usually imported players who's bodies or mentality couldn't adapt to this league.

I agree, don't get caught up either way. It's great to see a preview of them, but it's a preview and that's it, good or bad.

What we don't have is time to nurture these players. Not with the way we operate & expect managers to get us promoted within 6 months.

Where's the benifit in us nurturing Semedo? We bring him in, he spends 5-10 games settling, another 5-10 games getting into the swing of things, we get 5-10 games of quality from him and then before we know it he's inured, off-form or off back home.

Regardless of strengths or weaknesses, every loan player has to be bought here to hit the ground running and make an almost immediate impact. A few games settling I expect, but developing players is something we should do with our own who can net us 7-13m if sold, not some other team.

All substandard loans do is block our own & thus our own profit & expansion. They need to be up to it from the off.

Without sounding like Alf has took over my account that team with Moussi, Majewski, McGugan etc etc was probably the last team I felt any connection with, it actually felt like the players gave a shit even if they didn’t.

You’d see Wes and the other Nottingham lads out on a Saturday and nobody gave a shit ‘cause we were flying high in the league, an average group of lads playing out their skin every weekend compared to the mercenary’s we’ve employed in recent years. I’ll end this now before I mention the Scottish one

I think there's definitely space to have an element of risk taking on someone who has the fundamentals but needs it nurturing.

Last season I think we signed too many players and the squad was too big. For instance, I think Goncalves really had something, and I think if he was given a genuine run of games, we might have seen him have a real impact. But he obviously didn't get a chance, and the rotation of some positions was too much. That was probably my main criticism of AK, we rarely had a settled side.


We'll see how Semedo pans out in time. But as it stands, i'd say for the likely 3 central positions we have: Yacob, Semedo, Yates, Silva & Carvalho.


So it's not all on his shoulders to turn up and run our midfield all season. But I think it's worth the risk to see if Sabri can get it out of him, as from what little we've seen, I think the potential to boss a midfield is there.


What I don't want, is us to add Colback, and then got get another young CM on loan, and then have this massive number who we need to give a chance to, without allowing any to settle or anything.


For me, with what we have now, assuming Semedo signs, i'll happily say by to Watson, Bridcutt and Guedioura. If Oly need an 8, maybe Gued would even fancy a season in the sun with his buddy Soudani.

I know nothing of any of these players we're signing.

However, I saw a video of one of them booting a guy in the face, and quite frankly that's all I need to see.
