With Steve McClaren's decent record in cup competitions and us storming through the League Cup First round like a bull in a china shop we may be in with a shout of winning the league cup. We may also be in with a shout of promotion.
Would you rather win Forest's first trophy in 20 years or be promoted to the promised land?

Bearing in mind we would probably be challenging Derby's spectacular points record in the Premier League I would vote myself for a League Cup win ahead of promotion to the Premier League. On the other hand some people see the League Cup trophy as a little bit of a mickey mouse competiton.

I hate the Premiership BUT I think that is where we need (and should) be. I can't see us (or anyone else) taking The Sheep's Record away and the tougher The Championship League gets the less likely it will be.

No reason why we can't do both. :)

it would be pretty big if we took a cup

promotion seems to be coming one way or another in the next few years

I'd have the League Cup to be honest. I love the idea of lifting a trophy at Wembley and gaining access to European competition. It'd be absolutely fantastic.

Promotion for me. After the heartache of the last 2 years,it'd be so sweet to go to Wembley and win the playoffs. Plus the money it'd be for the club. Not sure either will happen though if I'm honest.

I think I'd be more tempted by the cup than elevation to a competition where survival is trumpeted as the highest of achievements for a promoted team.

Where's the "I can't decide" option?

If we won the cup we'd be able to attract players like Maynard the following season with the carrot of European Football. How many players would take European Football, in a winnable tournament, over getting your backsides handed to you weekly in the Premiership?

This. Just imagine someone like Feyenoord, Paris St Germain or Copenhagen away in Europe. It would be absolutely amazing.
Even if we get beaten, it's better to be beaten in European competition one season and be able to strengthen with prize money and more prestige to have a go at the big time the next season, than go up now and get our arses handed to us.

A league cup victory, especially by a side outside of the top flight, would live long in the memory. I honestly think the associated European football would give us a huge benefit in pushing forwards, and perhaps give us a decent grounding to build a squad that could more easily traverse the gulf between the Championship and the Premiership.

I think if we were in Europe next season we would be able to attract the kind of players who could get us promoted but are probably only really looking at a midtable Prem side at best.

As an example, if we were in Europe this season would Routledge have come here or gone to Swansea? A season of losing more than you win against a season of winning more than you lose and playing in Europe? We'd be able to build a Championship squad capable of competing in the Premiership if we had European football here. It could be key to building a sustainable Premiership outfit rather than one that will go up and struggle.

If we won promotion we'd be able to attract players like Maynard because of PL football and bigger wages accordingly.
Europa League is one-season joy with the possible elimination in the early stages.
Being a PL side gives you a chance of survival and further development. Then you can think about winning Cups. Even if you relegate parachute payments will compensate a bitter taste of going down.
Financially PL is more attractive than EL. For example, the winner of EL-2011 FC Porto got around €7m, quarterfinalist Dynamo Kiev - €2.7m etc

Interesting question as have come to a sobering reality that with football as it is now the best I can hope for in my lifetime is a League Cup win and possibly the ultimate an FA Cup!

So if it could only be this season and not again then it would be the League Cup. But even with the magic of the cup the only teams I can see winning it are ones in the Premiership not fighting relegation. I am worried about not getting promoted soon as it seems to be financially vital to the club. I envisage us getting promoted soon this season would be great and then maybe being able to stay up (depressing that going up and finishing third first season is pie in the sky for the forseeable!) and gradually not be occupied by trying to stay up season after season.

Then we can make a concerted effort to win a league cup and then who knows push for an FA Cup! But even pushing for Top 7 ever in my lifetime seems a tall order! Being a realist sucks!

But the optimist in me hopes Football the way it is now will come crashing down and it will become a more even playing field.

Some interesting points there RichJCrotch, it might actually make sense. When was last time somebody from the 2nd Division won it? Has it ever happened?

Having travelled away supporting England, I would love nothing more than to travel across Europe supporting the Reds. England trips are great but they involve Cockneys and Leeds fans, going away with Forest would be incredible
