World Cup 2010 draw!

I'm excited for this :)

The top seeds have just been announced. Rather predictably it is:

Spain, Brazil, England, South Africa, Germany, Italy, Argentina

So no France or Portugal, for obvious reasons, though somehow Argentina have scraped in even though they qualified poorly too, I guess they're ranked higher.

Draw is on Friday at 5pm (with an hour of that bollocks they do as well), on BBC2.

I think Argentina are ranked higher than France. Holland managed to sneak into the seeds as well since they qualified outright whereas France and Portugal got through the play-offs.

Could be a tough draw on South Africa unfortunately.

The other pots are:
• Pot 2 will be composed of teams from Asia (Australia, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic), North, Central America and the Caribbean (Honduras, Mexico, USA) and Oceania (New Zealand)

• Pot 3 will include teams from Africa (Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria) and South America (Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay)

• Pot 4 will have the remaining European teams (Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland)

• hosts South Africa will be automatically positioned as A1; the other seeded teams will be drawn into the other groups B-H, but will always be in position “1” of their group

• groups will be drawn from A to H and the positions in the group will be drawn for Pots 2 to 4

• geographical criteria will also be respected, meaning that no two teams from the same confederation will be drawn in the same group (except European teams, where a maximum of two will be in a group). For example, South Africa cannot play the African teams from Pot 3 and Argentina and Brazil cannot be drawn against the three remaining South American teams.

Possible draw?

A – South Africa, Japan, Paraguay, Switzerland
B – Brazil, Australia, Algeria, France
C – Germany, Mexico, Cameroon, Greece
D – Holland, Korea DPR, Ghana, Serbia
E – England, Honduras, Uruguay, Slovakia
F – Italy, New Zealand, Ivory Coast, Portugal
G – Argentina, Korea Republic, Nigeria, Denmark
H – Spain, USA, Chile, Slovenia

Chile? They're probably the strongest of the non-seeded South American sides. I'd worry about them being a potential banana skin.

Suprised France haven't been seeded, despite there poor record in qualifying and in 2002.

They did only lose the last final on penaltiesa after all.

We'l get Australia, Cameroon and Greece.

I would want to avoid the Americans too.

Didn't do too bad in the Confederations Cup, have a strong team anyway

Any draw is tough.

I think even New Zealand could worry some teams!

For England, their best bet could be to end up in Group B as South Africa are the seeded team in Group A, meaning it'll probably have the least quality in it.

Anyone think an African side might win it?

Certainly got a chance. Ivory Coast got unlucky with there draw at 2006, a kinder draw this time could see them progress to the quarters and then they'l have most of Africa behind them and anything could happen.

Ultimately I think Brazil will win it though.

England will win it and we'll get promoted. It'll be the Summer of love.

I think i'll be drunk well in to 2011 celebrating

I think Ivory Coast have a great chance of getting to the quarters at least depending on the draw.

If they were drawn with Argentina, Honduras and Switzerland, they'd have to be fancied to go through the group quite easily.

No - quarters for Ivory Coast if they get a decent draw, perhaps for one other African side to, but they generally get found out at the very top level.

I don't think any of them will win it either, but I can see Ivory Coast progressing to the latter stages. Ghana should qualify from their group as well.

Algeria could surprise people and reach the last 16.

Either way, it shows how far the African nations have come in recent years.

I really don't think Brazil will win it. Yes they've got the strongest side other than Spain, but I can see both of those sides being upset by the weather conditions. Brazil especially.

This tournament is ripe for England or Holland to triumph.

Except it's not taking place in Europe

That said, obviously Id love England to win, and out of all the serious contenders, if England were knocked out id back the dutch (as I did at Euro 2008). I like them :)

Brazil for me, they will maintain their record of being the only country to have won the World Cup outside their own contintent.

After that, a lot depends on the draw - England could go far but might need a 'sweeper' country taking out some of the major obstacles in their way, ie if we had to play the winners of Denmark v Spain, we'd struggle against Spain but if Denmark beat Spain I'd fancy our chances against the Danes. I don't think England have a consistency of performance against the top nations that is potentially required to win a quarter final, semi final and final all within a week.

Chile are highly rated at the moment, not seen them myself though, but they've certainly done well in qualifying.

There's not going to be many easy games, that's for sure.

Ivory Coast... if Drogba plays to his best, could trouble anybody. But they have the likes of Eboue and Kolo Toure in defence who are just as liable to f*** up as anybody. Dark horses though I reckon.

But really, you can't see beyond Spain or Brazil to win unless England don't stuff up early on and then put in an almighty performance when they come up against either of those two.

The draw will make things so much clearer, for example it might be that Spain, Holland and Brazil are in the same half of the draw, and England in the other half.

However, even if we ended up with a similar draw to 2002, when I would have backed us to beat all of the other quarter finalists apart from Brazil, we still have to eradicate the dodgy performances from our game for a whole month.
